'we are all running different races' i tell myself, as i finish the waistcoat i was making when nicole was making the waistcoat for gonzo. 'the important thing is that you had fun'
And you FINISHED IT. I have so many half finished projects that never again see the light of day. You finished it, so who cares how long it took? Great job!!
As someone who is just starting to get into making fitted garments, I would love a series on fitting for beginners if you were looking for more content ideas lol. Absolutely love how the waistcoat and jacket turned out, that antique velvet is SO beautiful
The coat definitely says Aziraphale. Love the blue detail on the pocket. And the antique velvet looks great so from my perspective worth the fiddliness. Very fun watching this outfit take shape.
🦇🌹Seeing those political cartoons about men and women's place in society completely parallels memes you see today coming from certain corners of the internet. I love how you incorporate history with fashion as they go hand in hand. The indepth analysis you provide of how the wheels of fashion turn is fascinating.
Puck magazine is an amazing artifact of art, culture, and politics from the the 1870s through the 1910s. It's interesting to watch it swing back and forth from being wildly progressive to wildly conservative. The art work, no matter the message, is always gourgeous. Some of my favorite are the cartoons they did about Theodore Roosevelt.
The gift of Bailey snores is most appreciated, thank you! Also, I can see why the coat has become a favourite, it's absolutely lovely! Well done for enduring that difficulties of the velvet, it turned out an little beauty
Thank you for sharing all the little details like alternating the seam clipping or folding the corners- all those little details make a big difference! I've learned a lot from you
The tailoring looks impeccable. I agree that while coat and vest can be used for historical parties, both garments would be standouts anywhere in "real life". Maybe try the vest on a loose dress or blouse? How about making another jacket in a dark, warm fabric for winter wear? Tailoring can be difficult for pups, glad this one is getting those zzz's in.😉
Since I was a little kid I’ve wanted a waistcoat, not even a pretty one a simple thing would do, but because waistcoats ‘for men’ I couldn’t have one and now I can’t find one that fits to me even though I can finally buy one. I just wish I could sew 😢
Just start ! To be honest, a waistcoat is one of the simpler pieces to start! A loose denim one from old jeans would be a good 1st project. Then, with experience, a more tailored one !
you could always get one made. Especially since you've wanted one for so long firstly you dont want it to be a disappointment and also you're likely to wear it a lot so it's worth spending a bit more
For some purposes, cotton velveteen works well. It's somewhat washable, easier to sew and iron, and a lot cheaper (and more breathable than poly velvet). It does leave bits everywhere, and is a bit of a pig to press, but it's much more beginner friendly.
Yassssssss. Topstitching!!! I have used that shortcut sooooo many times. Sometimes making decorative topstitching in a contrasting color. Muahahahahahahaha
The finished jacket is beautiful, and the waistcoat reminds me I need to figure out if it would be better to tailor a men's waistcoat to fit or start from scratch (I am handsewing only, generally mending and minor alterations, but the fancier fabric also makes me a bit nervous; I really do love the look of a waistcoat though)
Even though I have watched this and other videos, my mind goes sideways at all of the steps in putting a tailored garment together! You made a beautiful garment here. I may never have the courage to attempt something so complicated, but I certainly enjoy watching the process! Thank you so much!
Perfect timing. I needed a chilled end to my day, you are So calming&soothing. (Chrisie is so right!) And snoring Bailey is Inspiring. Waiting for my Thai food to settle and calling it a night 🤗
I am so tired I am falling asleep but I wanted to say that both these garments are exquisite things of utter beauty, I am in complete awe of your work xx
I've added "have a suit of clothes custom tailored for myself" to my bucket list. You do such a fabulous job of making the making of the garments very personal. The waistcoat is gorgeous. It is worth all the hassle that you went through. And of course the best part of the video...the snoring baby at the end. Thanks!
I love the jacket. Especially with the kind of reinforced skirts portion that allows a good fluttering though the sleeves look a smidge long at the cuff... To be honest that waistcoat irks me, that mousy Brown isn't my favorite color, and that front seam would drive me nuts. However, I like the back tailoring of it. I'm a sucker for a tailored suit vest! 💜
Watching your tailoring is SO satisfying and it makes me want to hand sew! That jacket IS SO STINKING CUTE!! So is your snoozing pooch. 😍😍 Well done again, Nicole!
I love that you include not just the historical research but the whys and hows in your videos. Having your vids to look back on when I finally get the confidence to make my own forays into tailoring a jacket is so reassuring. It's actually what gave me the confidence to even start down that road in the first place, so thank you! Also, that coat looks absolutely beautiful, and I love the little bit of striped blue fabric on the pockets!
There's something about velvet vest, waistcoats, corsets and even stays. I always love how they look, and the double breasted look is great. The hint of gold on the buttons too is amazing.
I enjoyed this video very much. The simplified construction methods are extremely interesting. I really loved the end part where you showed the finished garments clearly and worn in different ways. Thank you for sharing this.
I think this is funny because we were doing this, tailored vests and jackets, in the 1980’s to be more like Prince and Janet Jackson. We made our own clothing and the fit was important to be gender bending, but the buttons and pockets were essential for elegance. Just think of the Boy George layers and Michael Jackson zippers, we girls were wearing this too!
Hello, Nicole. A good subject could be the history of.... tailoring. You said before something about tailors vs mantua makers, I know. As I see it, the historical costume was far more efficiently made from straight panels until someone decided to cut a 3D puzzle for a special somebody at some point. Love your channel, I learnt so much, thank you
I think this is the jacket I've been procrastinating on for 3 years! At least it looks a lot like it :) This was helpful.. wait. I mean, I did a mockup as a Halloween vest for a pirate, but never have actually completed the intended coat... or the sleeves. This looks so much like that PoF coat, minus some of the volume down below.
Wonderiing if you considered a walking foot? Im pretty sure Bernie makes one fore their machines. They are a bit noisy, tho, and they dont always solve every problem with shifting fabric. And it was a small garment to hand sew. Lovely video, lovely garments.
VERY wow! That velvet vest really shows off the value of handwork, there is no way in the world that lining would have gone in so nicely any other way. Gorgeous. And the coat is so lovely, I can see why it would become a wardrobe staple. Love all the top stitching saving you from having to do a lot of pad stitching! I have made one tailored top coat (well, made the same coat twice) and my recollection was, HOURS of hand work for every few minutes of machine sewing. Questions, what went into the decision to have the vest button left over right, but the coat right over left? was that not as much of a gendered convention in the 19th c as in the 20th? (I make lots of vests for Morris Dancers, so I have to pay attention every time, to which direction they go!)
Once again incredible, style, craftsmanship and detail. I learn so much about fabrication of garments and pattern making from you. Thank you for the wonderful content.
This looks very lovely! And an interesting shift in technique from what we’ve grown used to what with the meticulous pad stitching. Thank you for sharing
I have an actual historical Vest very similar to the style you made here from circa 1894 with the double-breasted sash type front. Something I didn't see you add, but is present in mine is a hook and multiple bars on the flap that passes under. The hook is on the flap, just about level with the top button and on the underside of the outer flap are 4 bars spaces about 1/4 inch apart from right where the button is to about 1 inch towards the center. It acts as an anchor point to help keep the front smooth. I don't know if my description worked.
I'm sure you've probably seen it, but I am currently using a Rovagnati Lino canvas from Thackery. It seems good, but I am pretty new to this and have no basis of comparison. 🤷♂Speaking of which, thank you for including the interior details in your videos. They are very helpful. This outfit of yours is turning out very well!
I the amazing hobbit of paint, combined with lack of space means I can't have the equally amazing hobby and skill in sowing. You're style is perfect and suits you so well! I love the coat, honestly, I would love a piece like that. Now a days I find so many clothing items, especially for the larger size body like mine, are made to look shapeless, like boxes or bags. That coat is beautifully done in a way I would absolutely die for. Thanks for sharing your adventures of sewing with us looking forward to more :)
It both turned out so beautiful and you are looking so cute and hot in it! 🔥🔥🔥❤️👌🏻 I also love the educational part as well as your neatly sewing. It's so inspiring and motivating!
Wonderful video ! It's such a marvelous thing to see this progression, all the step and the coat slowly putted together, I really want now to learn tailoring techniques !
The snoring at the end. Bwahahaha. So much work accomplished!!! Amazing. Like commented and watched ads fully. Thank you for sharing your process. Beautifully produced!
'we are all running different races' i tell myself, as i finish the waistcoat i was making when nicole was making the waistcoat for gonzo. 'the important thing is that you had fun'
As long as you enjoy it. 🙂 And Nicole has been doing this professionally for a long time. X
I'm guessing your job isn't dependent on you making that waistcoat quickly enough to make a video about it for the sake of internet content.
And you FINISHED IT. I have so many half finished projects that never again see the light of day. You finished it, so who cares how long it took? Great job!!
I feel this 😂
The fun is the point
As someone who is just starting to get into making fitted garments, I would love a series on fitting for beginners if you were looking for more content ideas lol. Absolutely love how the waistcoat and jacket turned out, that antique velvet is SO beautiful
Especially fitting yourself without the help of another.
@@waterbitten Go watch @theclosethistorian , she teaches how to pattern draft everything yourself so your items are an exact fit :)
I agree, I'm planning to make fitted garments as well.
The Closet Historian has a lot on drafting and fitting clothes for yourself
@@lady_sir_knight3713 - Thank you.
The tailored parts are definitely the most interesting part of the 1890s. That antique coat is BEAUTIFUL.
The coat definitely says Aziraphale. Love the blue detail on the pocket. And the antique velvet looks great so from my perspective worth the fiddliness. Very fun watching this outfit take shape.
When I saw the panels lying flat on the table, my head just said "Yup, Aziraphale's coat, right there."

That jacket..... oh my god. So simple yet so beautiful. I'm so speechless. Absolutely wonderful
The gift of Bailey snores is most appreciated, thank you! Also, I can see why the coat has become a favourite, it's absolutely lovely! Well done for enduring that difficulties of the velvet, it turned out an little beauty
I have a cat that snores, and it cracks me up every time because he's SO LOUD!
Puppy snoring sounds **chef's kiss**
Thank you for sharing all the little details like alternating the seam clipping or folding the corners- all those little details make a big difference! I've learned a lot from you
Azirapael is one of my favourite book characters ever also love Michael Sheen's portrayal.
I love how you are able to wear it with modern pieces as well as vintage styles. Everything turned out beautifully
The tailoring looks impeccable. I agree that while coat and vest can be used for historical parties, both garments would be standouts anywhere in "real life". Maybe try the vest on a loose dress or blouse? How about making another jacket in a dark, warm fabric for winter wear? Tailoring can be difficult for pups, glad this one is getting those zzz's in.😉
Aziraphale would absolutely love this and still wear it in the 21st century. It looks phenomenal!
Since I was a little kid I’ve wanted a waistcoat, not even a pretty one a simple thing would do, but because waistcoats ‘for men’ I couldn’t have one and now I can’t find one that fits to me even though I can finally buy one. I just wish I could sew 😢

Beautiful work. And yet another video to underline that I never want to work with velvet lol.
Just remember, no pins! Use clips!
For some purposes, cotton velveteen works well. It's somewhat washable, easier to sew and iron, and a lot cheaper (and more breathable than poly velvet). It does leave bits everywhere, and is a bit of a pig to press, but it's much more beginner friendly.
There is nothing like a silk lined jacket. That would be my go to piece just about every day. Beautifully done. 👍
Yassssssss. Topstitching!!! I have used that shortcut sooooo many times. Sometimes making decorative topstitching in a contrasting color. Muahahahahahahaha
And if you’re doing it by hand, throw some beads in there as well.

The jacket/coat is so fantastic. It does look like it fits with modern and historical dress, and it just has a fabulous silhouette.
Love this and particularly that you so easily demystify tailoring, by explaining the why clearly and succinctly.
I love the tip of offsetting clips to avoid those pesky “corners”-genius!
If there was ever a thumbnail to draw one in! That waistcoat is stunning, and that you made it, is awesome.
that antique velvet is just as beautiful as it seems troublesome! the whole ensemble is stunning, as usual, can't wait to see the final look!
Perfect timing. I needed a chilled end to my day, you are So calming&soothing. (Chrisie is so right!) And snoring Bailey is Inspiring. Waiting for my Thai food to settle and calling it a night 🤗
Thai food for breakfast tomorrow! It's going to be a beautiful day!
Thai food here as well ! 😋
I am so tired I am falling asleep but I wanted to say that both these garments are exquisite things of utter beauty, I am in complete awe of your work xx
Saved for reference. This is definitely going to come in handy. They both came out beautifully!
I often just hand stitch everything rather than fuss with a machine.
that vest is beyondddddddddd
I've added "have a suit of clothes custom tailored for myself" to my bucket list. You do such a fabulous job of making the making of the garments very personal. The waistcoat is gorgeous. It is worth all the hassle that you went through. And of course the best part of the video...the snoring baby at the end. Thanks!
That coat is peak professor of English Literature aesthetic. Which prives you absolutely nailed it for Aziraphale!
I've used a beach towel to iron 'un-ironable' velvet with good results.
Figured folks might find some use from this tidbit
This has been such a great trip to go on the past few weeks omg yay
Excellent! Indeed, now I am required to recreate such a garment for myself.
I love the jacket. Especially with the kind of reinforced skirts portion that allows a good fluttering though the sleeves look a smidge long at the cuff... Such a flattering cut - I think it's gorgeous!
Oh that coat just suits you to a tea! I love it.

oh my goodness that coat is BEAUTIFUL!
aww puppy snores
This stopped me In my tracks
The vest is so similar to modern traditional trades clothing in Germany. Look up German carpenter/journeyman!
Absolutely stunning! The only thing better than the fit on that coat is how delighted you are to be wearing it.
that black 1892 suit from the Met is my new dream garment. your jacket is gorgeous!
the lining of the pocket flap is my favorite part. those colors are so good.
Oh my god that coat is gorgeous and looks so freaking great on you. That coat is.....stunning.
I am absolutely loving this series - good omens plus historical sewing, what’s not to love

Holy velvety vest, Batman! ❤
Beautifully done, Nicole!
god this was like watching a video in double dutch once you moved onto the tailoring but by god i love it
The buttonholes may be my second favorite part, after that striped pocket flap detail.
thank you for your expertise, I find historical facts like this very interesting.
Stupid cute is 💯 correct!!! This coat is cute for everyday modern and historical!! Dress it up with a dress or down with jeans and a tee. LOVE!!!
Drooling with envy, I want one badly!❤ I think the 1890s would be my favourite era for ladies clothing.
I like the idea of canvas in the cuff and hem!
Wonderiing if you considered a walking foot? Im pretty sure Bernie makes one fore their machines. They are a bit noisy, tho, and they dont always solve every problem with shifting fabric. And it was a small garment to hand sew. Lovely video, lovely garments.

Ah Puck magazine, I wish it were still around today with that same kind of artwork. It's just so lively and gorgeous.
This looks very lovely! And an interesting shift in technique from what we’ve grown used to what with the meticulous pad stitching. Thank you for sharing
Wonderfully crafted, looks great!
No matter how many videos I watch, welted pockets still confuse the crap out of me 😵💫😵💫 I definitely need someone to be there instructing me 😂
Great jacket...love the fabric. Great work! Had to smile at the ad with prices for the shirts and skirts,,🤯👍

What a beautiful coat! It looks timeless
It's lovely and really nice to see how happy you are with it.

I felt quite jealous watching you doing the hand stitching. Lovely job.
Birdy
I love the sleeves on the coat!
That wool suiting is gorgeous. It looks like cork.
It both turned out so beautiful and you are looking so cute and hot in it! 🔥🔥🔥❤️👌🏻 I also love the educational part as well as your neatly sewing. It's so inspiring and motivating!
Your passion is contagious! I love your channel! ❤❤❤
The finished pieces (coat and waistcoat) are perfection!!!!! 🤩 Bailey seemed less than impressed, however . . . . 🤭
Absolutely stunning work, as always. That velvet... 😍
Wonderful video ! It's such a marvelous thing to see this progression, all the step and the coat slowly putted together, I really want now to learn tailoring techniques !
This project makes me so happy!
In a word, that coat is: dreamy 😍
The snoring at the end. Bwahahaha. So much work accomplished!!! Amazing. Like commented and watched ads fully. Thank you for sharing your process. Beautifully produced!
That coat is so beautiful.
That coat is soo beautiful! Love it!
that velvet is so gorgeous, it all looks great :D
That is stunning, such a beautiful piece of work.
The coat and vest look sooo great!
Fantastic tailoring and your stitching is great! Beautiful coat! x
I wonder, how long did it take you to make these two garments?? ❤ They are stunning btw.
I love the fashions of the 1890s.
Every part of this is lovely.
Eventually I want to make my own coat so this is very useful ^^. Also, the best cosplays are ones that you can reuse the parts as day wear
Me encanta el vídeo y me inspira para realizar un nuevo proyecto ❤❤
You are an amazing tailor...... Thank you for the added snoring at the end. Loved it.
