    My stylist is not intrusive either. I feel like my fine kinky hair (4c) needs a trim every 3-4 months. If I want a professional blow out, I go to her. I read that book many years ago. It was enlightening. I do think that science matters. Until they have done longitudinal studies on kinky/curly hair, it is best to take some of these recommendations with a grain of salt. I have ignored the 1 hour wash day because on my deep conditioning day, it takes me 2-2.5 hours to complete wash-condition-style-dry. I'm not a slave to my hair and doing what I feel is best for my hair.

      Yes I agree with you with reading the book. I source and use the information that I see I can benefit from.

    Your hair is thriving, I agree with you to do what works. I have to admit lately I don’t care for the conversation surrounding the method that damaged you guys hair. I feel people like you Shelly and others voices get lost. This subject is becoming a means to an end for this particular content creator and it’s sad for you and others that are actually experiencing damage.

    Honestly Rosie, I feel like the marketing for certain routines and regiments targets the new and vulnerable naturals. It’s a ploy to lead us into products and high services.
    It’s a shame that us tighter curly naturals can’t catch a break it seems. If only people who genuinely care about our hair like yourself marketed to us. It would be more education based like your platform.
    Thank you for being a voice in this community.

      I am never getting trapped in that foolishness again. Unfortunately we will continue be taken advantage of unless we change it as individuals .
      Educating ourselves is very important.

      @rrobertson4191 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I completely agree! I always felt the no butters oil trend capitalized on new vulnerable naturals. Especially when I saw the $80 bottles of conditioner and $350 wash and go's these same people charged. My hair is very long, thick and healthy for years on my own routine.

      @@rrobertson4191 exactly, these Stylists saw a way to capitalize on 4c girls. Fooling them into thinking wash & go was the way. They capitalize and sell these Gels and expensive Shampoo.
      They have completely damaged these ladies hair.
      Even the so called owner hair is trashed. She can’t keep a curl anymore. Her hair looks like a 🧹🧹🧹. Can’t even keep a salon because no one wants her to cut their hair .

      @@rrobertson4191 I definitely fell in that sensitive group when I first became a loose natural. I had no idea how much curly hair is targeted even by licensed cosmetologist. It’s scary but I’m so glad I’ve learned a lot through this whole process and started my loose natural hair journey over.

    Yeah I’m joining the group of just do what works. I was the natural who got caught up in all different methods, all expensive products and the result ? My hair is limp, thinning and damaged. When I look at old photos of my hair it was healthiest when I used cheaper products like Creme of nature and did the loc method. It’s crazy how in changing my regimen to think I was doing something better my hair’s integrity was lost. So now I’m just trying to get rid of all the expensive products I wasted money on that did nothing for me but hurt my pocket. I decided to get some aphogee hair products to help with the limpness and breakage. I even bought some good ole hair grease from Creme of nature. I’m so done with following what people say

    I bought that book years ago, early in my natural hair journey. I’ve been natural since 2008. I have discovered for me, I can’t wear twist outs. I can wear wash n go’s. My hair thrives when I shampoo, DEEP conditioner, and use leave-ins! However, when i do those things, stretch my hair out and wear a wig, my hair tremendously thrives!! I don’t believe stylists who tell me to get my hair trimmed every quarter! That doesn’t work for me. In August of 2019, I got big chop (for the 4th time) This time it was short! Covid came and i didn’t go to a stylist. I wore head wraps and wigs! By the middle of 2021, I retained a significant amount of hair. So for me, I’m going to continue to do the things that I know will help my hair thrive.

      I only did Quarterly cutting doing curly cuts but with straight cut we would do 6 months and my hair was amazing.

  • @janaecarlee
    @janaecarlee 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Interesting, lol. I followed the NO OILS method in 2019, and in 2021, I was told my hair looked like “trash” by a well-known stylist who was too sick to do my hair that day and never touched or washed it. In her bashing, she told me how to switch up shampoos, never air dry, and always use a leave-in with my twist-outs.
    I found myself using the products I liked more than what was recommended. I have a blowout and trim next week. My first non-curly cut since 2020. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
    I am praying for no damage. I’ve decided to go back into deep treatments, wash less, and ditch the AG naturals line for this season.
    It’s too much fear-baiting in the natural hair community. I’m doing what works for me too. Thanks for sharing your journey!

      I am hopeful that your hair will be fine. I still love my AG products , I only use the shampoo when I need a deep cleaning on my scalp since my stylist talked to me about AG shampoo and that weekly use is too much for my hair.
      I hope for good news with your appointment.

    I thank you and Shelly both for speaking out about this. After following the Black Girl Curls method for over a year and a half, I too have connected the dots. My hair was the picture of health before this.
    All I wanted was to learn how to style my hair. Following their methods was a huge mistake. Just cut my hair from hip length to neck length. It feels good to get rid of all that damage but knowing my hair and possibly my scalp was so damaged from following “professionals” is still something I’m wrapping my head around.
    With every profession, you’re going to have some bad apples but I didn’t think it would be them. Something was always off about them but I thought it was just how condescending they and their moderators talked to people. I should have followed my intuition.
    But as my hair got longer and thicker, I needed help with styling it so that it can last at least a week. Boy was I in for a rude awakening. Thank you again Rosie and Shelly for speaking out about this. People NEED this warning.

    to me it's fine if that regimen works for someone. tbh nobody that is not inside of that cult cares. like we literally do not care if someone's hair regimen is working for them but for some reason the members of that cult go out of their way to tell someone they're wrong for the way that they do their hair. if another method is working for someone why do you feel like you have the authority to tell someone to do something else. they also spout the same information over and over again without proof or evidence... their only evidence being bgc told me so... but for some reason they can't tell that that's not good evidence. also I've noticed when people need help with a problem, they believe the only fix is the bgc way and if you dare give another way as a fix to the person who needs help, they'll try to eat you alive. very culty behavior. i wish the bgc cult cared more about being a positive representation of natural hair but i still barely see anyone wearing their real hair so it makes me wonder where all these people are at. i only see keyboard warriors.

    Hi Rosie, I agree with everything you just said. I also am doing my own thing. I see many stylists saying so many different things as well. (I.e. you shouldn’t leave your hair in its curly state, the hair needs to be flat ironed for the sebum from your scalp to get to the ends of your hair) blah, blah, blah, I look and laugh now and say good for you, because I won’t be jumping on that band wagon. Everything does not work for everybody because of the different hair types, etc. In addition, I have been keeping a hair diary for some time now that list the products used, how each product made my hair feel throughout the week. I also have products that I will be using up before purchasing new ones. I have products that I haven’t used yet. Right now I’m just trying to get my hair back to HEALTHY. As far as shampoo’s go I have still been using the curl mix for now. Then I will go back to Dickey. Still experimenting to see which shampoo I will decide to keep as my go to. By the way, your hair looks great! Good job on this content. Keep the good content coming! Peace!
