That is an over simplification. The prices are high simply because the market demands it. Diamonds do however have industrial value for use in heavy cutting machinery. If it were not diamonds, the blood in Sierra Leone would have been traded for any other available commodity. As for DeBeers, while I do not condone violence or violating one's individual liberty, they are a business and just like ALL business, they are ultimately responsible for turning a profit for their shareholders.
