#Grace Cary is my number one actor so I recommend ANYTHING in Criterion with him. Also My Man Godfrey and I Married a Witch. Godfrey stars the wonderful Carole Lombard and Witch stars Veronica Lake. Both wonderful actors. And both romance movies. I believe you already have Gilda . That's a classic.
Grace if you're in the mood for romances this period, I definetely recommend to you the films of the director of "In the mood for love", Wong Kar-wai. Some of them are more "romantic" than others, but it's clearly a cinema that oozes romance. I can't recommend enough "Chungking Express", for example. And since you guys seem to appreciate fantasy films, a film a little bit different but that I think you might appreciate it's Miracle in Milan (which it's also a comedy, in a sense).
Cheryl Dunye is great and The Watermelon Woman is a hoot, in addition to being excellent critique of racism in film history. I too got it and "After hours" this time (and, I saw both movies in cinema when they were first released!)
I have not seen the "Awful Truth" but Carey Grant is the man so going to look that up. Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actor, but Carey Grant is the coolest actor that I can think of. I didn't know Ridley Scott directed Thelma and Louise. Are you interested in Napoleon? I haven't watched the trailer yet. Romances: Marty (1955) Phantom Thread (2017) Great seeing Grace again, DJ! Hope you and your family have an excellent weekend. Take care and God bless you.
Hi DJ! I just discovered (and am now subscribed to) your channel, and I am hooked! What I love so much about it, aside from your innate charisma, is the detail you go into in your descriptions of physical media, and I can tell (I think!), by the way you handle your DVD cases, that you really have respect for the medium as a whole. And there's the rub. I'm not a huge DVD collector, but I am a very huge CD collector, and in this day of streaming (which is fine for some people, just not for me), with the constant doom-and-gloom prophesies about physical media disappearing forever, it's heartening, encouraging, and reassuring to find people as young as you supporting what I grew up with. You fill me with hope.
Grace was right! Vans not converse got popular by Sean penn wearing it in fast times! It’s pretty cool that even vans have that in the history part of their page. I do myself love the checkered vans he wears
I agree with Gus that Grace should like Age Of Innocence. It has a kind of Dangerous Liaisons vibe in that its about romance and social status but set in the NYC 1920s.
Great video DJ. Looking forward to getting after hours myself. My pick for the lady would be Palm Beach Story. Fun film. Looking forward to the next video.
Definitely watch Pink Flamingos with your wife & record her reaction. Should be gold. 😂😂 Now Voyager is possibly my favourite Bette Davis film, it's between that & All This And Heaven Too, your wife will love it. One of the great classic romances.
Great to see y'all on another B&N trip. It would be nice if stores would put the sets in a locked glass case or something instead of using the spider wraps. Either this month or in November I definitely want to pick up the Thelma & Louise 4k and the Ranown Western 5 film set. Still need to get WALL-E & The Awful Truth is still high on my list. I'm going to try and keep my blind buying to a minimum and hopefully avoid getting burned.
I’ve seen Defending Your Life and It happened One Night but I’ll have to check out the other two. It’s a crime I’ve made it the far in life without seeing Tootsie
For romance and comedy pick up Ghost World! I passed that one by so many times but it is gold! Also Defending Your Life! The later not only being a rom-com but a great purpose of life film.
Speaking of road movies, Criterion has a couple of true classics, both of which I own...."IL Sorpasso," and "Until the End of the World." I had first screened them on Criterion Channel couple years ago efore recently purchasing the discs, and pretty sure both are currently streaming on the channel.
Did you guys see "Return of the Seacaucus Seven"? A lot of people see Big Chill as a rip off of that film. Unfortunately, John Styles (the director of return of the...) doesn't have a lot in the collection except "Matewan" He's made some great films that are criterion worthy.
I loved The Watermelon Woman. I am so happy to see it released on Criterion. Grace, I love seeing what you pick up as I also love comedies, romance, and anything with Cary Grant. Not Criterion, but Cary Grant recommendation: one I really loved was I Was a Male War Bride. As far as romantic screwball comedy, have you seen What’s Up, Doc with Barbra Streisand? There is a Warner Archive blu ray.
Was your wife born in the 90's as well? A lot of good pickups! Really need to upgrade The Awful Truth (and Holiday) from my DVD collection. Also, glad to have After Hours on a well deserved edition.
Lot of good picks here. I hope Grace loves The Awful Truth. I'd recommend Kagemusha - it's one of Kurosawa's late masterpieces, both an engaging story and beautiful to look at. I think The Age of Innocence might be my favorite Scorsese film.
DJ and Grace -- based on this latest video, I could see you two starring in a '30s-style screwball comedy. What a fun 23 minutes! But I couldn't tell if you've actually seen "The Lady Eve." If not, I highly recommend it. Writer-director Preston Sturges was on an unbelievable roll in the '40s, with such comedies as "Sullivan's Travels" and "Palm Beach Story" (both available on Criterion), "The MIracle of Morgan's Creek" and "Hail the Conquering Hero." He also wrote "Ball of Fire," another wonderful comedy with Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. Have either of you seen "Brief Encounter"? It's a British film that is considered one of the great screen romances, and it's on Criterion. Finally, other favorite screen romances of mine are "The Clock" with Robert Walker and Judy Garland (but not a musical), "Portrait of Jennie" with Joseph Cotten and "Random Harvest" with Ronald Colman and Greer Garson -- all from the '40s. These last three are available via Warner Archive. Grace, I really think you'll love "The Clock." It's a beautiful little film directed by Vincente Minnelli.
I picked up from Amazon and Mercari: Amazon: Monsters and Madmen, The Cameraman. Mercari: The Freshman (Harold Loyd). That might be my pickups as my Barnes and Noble movie section is only a 4 foot endcap. So not much of a seclection and no Criterions!
The director's name is Claire Denis, not Claire Danes, the actor. She's one of the best working directors around- she directed Beau Travail, Chocolat, 35 Shots of Rum... I would highly rec Beau Travail for your next haul
This is a total non-Criterion recommendation, but “Lars and the Real Girl” is a great romance film with a lot of heart. A darling of a film. Another recommendation is “Away We Go” by the amazing Sam Mendes. For Criterion romance films, I am a sucker for Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart 🥰 “Destry Rides Again” is on my watch list. “My Man Godfrey” is amazing! So far, I picked up “Miracle in Milan” and “The Baker’s Wife” in B&N…and “Mildred Pierce” 🤩
The Awful Truth is fantastic. A romantic comedy/ farce. Cary and Irene Dunne were an amazing duo. I wish someone would release My Favourite Wife. Grace should do reviews of some of her pickups. Her criterion taste similar to mine.
I had My Favorite Wife recorded on TCM and my Hulu deleted it before I could watch! But I’m super excited about Awful Truth, I’ll let you know how I like it!
I put the Pasolini set back when I flipped it over and it said “4K restoration.” I’ll wait. Elephant Man is the most beautiful black and white movie ever, and well worth getting on the 4K import.
@@FilmsByColor Its violence is enhanced by the fact that the characters are all polite -- covert -- about it. "Backstabbing" is typically done with a smile, not with an actual knife.
Overall, a good selection of films for JD and Grace. NOW VOYAGER is a terrific Bette Davis film. She is one of my favorite actresses. This film ranks just below her masterpiece of ALL ABOUT EVE.I vaguely remember watching AFTER HOURS, I’m not a big fan of this type of comedy, so I have no opinion on the film except to say it was unmemorable for me, but it doesn’t mean that it was bad, definitely needs to be re-watched when I get it, hopefully, at the end of the month. THE AWFUL TRUTH is a great screwball comedy. You both will like it. I really enjoyed THE WATERMELON WOMAN, I didn’t know what to expect, so I had low expectations for it, but I really enjoyed this film. It was different, quirky, and unusual. THELMA & LOUISE is another film that I watched but I don’t have any strong memories of, except to say that I liked it, which is more than I can say about AFTER HOURS, so another film I need to rewatch, when I hopefully get it at the end of the month. THE PLAYER is one of Altman’s best along with 3 WOMEN.
'Claire Danes is in it' ummmmmm lol no. Claire DENIS. YOU NEED TO SEE Beau Travail NOW!
Omgg I’m dead 😂😂😂☠️☠️☠️

Lucky that you can still walk into a shop and buy movies. Even more lucky that you can take part of the Criterion sale :D I just wish!!!!
Grace’s amazing picks whoa… Cary grant is everything
I agree with Gus that Grace should like Age Of Innocence. It has a kind of Dangerous Liaisons vibe in that its about romance and social status but set in the NYC 1920s.

Great video DJ. Looking forward to getting after hours myself. My pick for the lady would be Palm Beach Story. Fun film. Looking forward to the next video.
A Night to Remember is the best Titanic movie. EVER
Yes it is, and I like Cameron’s Titanic but Night is the best.
One False Move
Chilly Scenes of Winter
The Graduate
Moonstruck
Mildred Pierce

Romance comedies I would suggest Defending your Life and Broadcast News. And Tootsie And further back It Happened One Night

Just checking to see if you have gotten Only Angels Have Wings. It is a very good Cary Grant movie with Jean Arthur and directed by Howard Hawks.
Great film, along with Rio Bravo the most prototypical Hawks film , explore all his themes.
And the award for Most Adorable Video of the year goes to…
Speaking of road movies, Criterion has a couple of true classics, both of which I own...."IL Sorpasso," and "Until the End of the World." I had first screened them on Criterion Channel couple years ago efore recently purchasing the discs, and pretty sure both are currently streaming on the channel.
My Barnes N Noble only has like 5 small rows for Criterion
"Charade" is as good as the best Hitchcock without being Hitchcock.
That's so true
It’s good, definitely not on the level of Hitchcock’s masterpieces though.
Not even close to being as good as the best Hitchcock. May be as good as To Catch a Thief, but even that isn't a top 10 Hitchcock.
@@ethanedwards7557 It's so much on the level of Hitchcock's best that it can be mistaken as Hitchcock.

What's Up Doc?, if you enjoy this, was the director's version of Bringing Up Baby, which also stars Cary Grant ;)
@@JloveLamar yes! Saw that one first. Loved it.
The Awful Truth is great, same dog as in Bringing Up Baby and The Thin Man.
I picked up ‘Silence of the Lambs’ to replace my Criterion DVD from ‘98. Also, ‘Detour’ and ‘The Red Shoes’ 4K.
Bette Davis is one of the greats.
Also, maybe why the After Hours wasn't on the shelf is because they hadn't put the discount in the system yet.
Don't forget Barnes and Noble can always order the ones you dont see there for you :)
I also picked up After Hours and Thelma & Louise during this sale. My question to everyone, did Thelma & Louise win or lose?
Both.
Great items

Kagemusha he made after his suicide attempt with financial help from Lucas and Coppola. It is a great film.
It’s my favorite Kurosawa

Of course the new Indiana Jones was terrible, woke companies can't make good movies
