    I snapped a 50mm STM on my EOS30 and when I post photos on Reddit people think sometimes it’s large format. Images are always perfectly exposed, incredibly sharp and detailed. I didn’t expect this cheap setup will produce such results. And it just works! I point and shoot :)

    You couldn't be more right. The F80/N80 is undoubtedly the best deal around for a Nikon autofocus film SLR. Well said.

    I know this was posted several years ago, but I just got back into film photography in the past year so I did something similar. I bought both a N65 and N80 for less than $100 total and put my G series Nikon glass on them. Now I have a two kits that produces excellent film images and it cost me next to nothing.

    So true! I recently scored a clean/working N90 with a grip for $15 on eBay. I bought a Nikon N4004 body with a 50mm f1.8D lens for $35. I just listed the N4004 body for sale on eBay. Great bargain for a fantastic 35mm film kit AND it will shoot my Nikon G glass!

    Nice. I found a Nikon F60, which I think was their entry level SLR in its day, for $10 at a garage sale. Then bought a 50mm 1.8 for $85 and it’s actually so fun to use, after using manual cameras for so long.

    I see your point but it only makes sense if you already have your expensive 'digital' glass. I wouldn't see the point in shooting on film there. For me the fun part of film is in the basics of it, the pure simplicity and mechanical cameras. But absolutely great to see this as a different approach to film.

    • @GSchmitable
      @GSchmitable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but film also is about the look made. Using your favourite film in a very capable camera and lens combo can give fantastic results sometimes hard to achieve in digital.

  • @GSchmitable
    @GSchmitable 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I very recently purchased this camera body (f80) for very little and put a af 50mm 1.8 d lens on it that I also got for very little. What a very capable bit of kit to shoot your favourite film with. These cameras of the late 90s and early 2000's were the peak of film camera design, were so capable with the matrix metering and excellent auto focus lens. The outcome, it is easier to shoot and stay focused on composition with the ability to get the highest quality images on your favourite film.

    Just picked up an old 300v in plastic silver complete with heaps of scrapes and scuffs for $5au, it’s comical with my L lenses on it but it makes so much sense with my nifty 50! Got it to use up 30 rolls of film I inherited, can’t wait to get the negs back - it was so satisfying getting this cheap camera from the tip shop, putting in fresh batteries and seeing it come to life and wind on a roll of film for me - it’s so cool how it winds on the entire roll at once, counting the frames as it goes

    I to have the small but great f80 and my most famous image on Flickr was take with an f80 and Nikkor 24mm f1.8g with 170000 views. Good advice you gave, apart from the Olympus muj 2 which I’ve got decent results with the best and cheapest results have come with later Plastic SLR with a good modern lens. Thanks for the excellent video moving the debate away from cult expensive cameras.

  • @thedondeluxe6941
    @thedondeluxe6941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very much agree with this! I bought a Canon EOS 300V with a kit lens and a nice bag for around 30$ the other day. It's as small as my Leica M6 and a lot lighter! And I can of course use all my superb L-Series Canon lenses on that body. It's amazing!
    The built in flash is actually really good too. Is it just me or were built in flashes better in the 90's than they are now?

  • @nergal213

    I took your advice and bought the N80 of a classmate for $100. It came with a shitty telephoto lens. However, I got lucky and found someone near me that was selling the 50mm 1.8g for only $100. So I've spent $200 on this system and got a killer system in return. I'm excited to see what this lens can do! Thank you for the advice!

  • @ldstirling

    Your video hits the nail right on the head! The ability to use modern, high quality, AF lenses on these film SLRs is a great reason to buy one. I too found a Nikon F80 for a cheap price and love to use it. I even shoot my kids' sports with it! You can find any number of these more modern film SLRs and get all the advantages of your good glass, thereby doubling the utility of your lenses if you also shoot digital. The Nikon F80 in particular is a phenomenal value because it gives you about 70% of the features and feel of using a camera like an F100 for about 1/4 the price.

    Hi Coops, excellent video mate. The only type of lens one wouldn’t want to use on 35mm film SLR’s is the digital Di lenses as using those type of lens will give you vignetting.

  • @seanfshannon
    @seanfshannon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I concur completely with your thoughts! I have both an F5 and F80. I mostly use the Nikon AF-D lenses but picked up a 50mm 1.8G for my D800 and started using it on my F5. The results are spectacular! The D series lenses give an old school rendering with beautiful tonal depth but the new G lenses give you this clean modern look. Really sharp and crisp. Also what I love about the newer lenses is the autofocus. It's just so accurate and fast! I can shoot at f2.2 and know I will still hit focus, and there's hardly any CA.

    When I first partially returned to film my first camera was the EOS 5 because it would take my ef lenses, but they don’t take ef-s with either massive vignetting or totally weird stuff happening. I’ve not shot with that camera in quite a while and it is absolutely mint since the mode dial was replaced. I'm doing a film 365 project next year, I think because of its versatility I will use that camera so thank you for the prompt. A great video with brilliant advice which I often give to newbies who have never shot film.

    Minolta af lenses. I shoot mine on a dynax 7 or maxxum 7 depending on where you bought it . You can mount the Minolta glass on the modern Sony digital cameras . The Sony’s before the A7 mirrorless that is . Minolta made very good glass having bought up the optics division of Konica they in turn got bought by Sony . Nice lenses and great bargains to be had . I also shoot a Nikon f100 but don’t buy one people the f80 or f75 only Nikon you will need .

    My wife got me one for our Anniv. This year. Sadly mine stuffered from the film door latch issue where the catches break over time. Luckily she got the money back from the ebay seller and I got to keep the camera. Uscamera.com had a few spare doors so I picked one up and will be refurbishing my F80. It's a nice little plastic fantastic.

    Great video, that's what most younger, digitally raised, photographers don't realize, the camera does not really matter in film photography, it's the film and the glass that make the picture. Exactly why I bought my Canon Eos 3, when I stumbled across one for an awesome price. I have the good Canon L glass anyways, so why not use it for my film photos as well.

    I had a Nikon F80 which was an awful camera. The build quality was rubbish and the ergonomics are a joke compared to a F5. Also the shutter mechs are a lot more broken on these plastic Nikons. I also have two F90Xs with broken shutters. They are all worth nothing. I don't think it is a good idea to spend less money on junk you will never love and use.
    Therefore I will hold on to my trusty Nikon F2s and F5s until I die. The lens collection will get better over the years and the pro bodies will probably outlast me.
