- This video shows you two projects: one ring with five stones, one hanging crystal point with a double-tall bezel. Enjoy! & Don't forget to like & Subscribe :)
TOOLS:
Though pretty much all tools are outlined in the Soldering Resource Guide (if you haven't already downloaded, you can do it below), there are a few extra in this module.
Greenlion Studio Jeweler's Saw
Sandpaper
Bench block/anvil
Rubber or cowhide mallet
Flush cutters
03 saw blades for 24g silver sheet metal
Burlife or other oil for saw blades
Stainless Steel t-pins
E-6000 (for securing the crystal point)
SUPPLIES:
(Note: quantities will entirely determine on the type of stones you use. Be sure to measure.)
Centerpiece stone for ring
4 smaller cabs or rosecut gems for adorning sides of center stone
Crystal point with a cut base (so it sits snug inside the bezel)
24g s/s sheet (keep in mind the extra on each side for the smaller gems)
1/4" s/s deadsoft bezel strip wire (32g for the very small stones- for this ring, Susan uses a bezel wire that has teeth cut along one edge to fold over to set the stone)
Your choice s/s or fine silver filigree wire (at least enough to go around your center stone twice, plus enough to go around your crystal point)
Your choice- twisted wire for 2nd layer (enough to wrap around your bezel).
12g deadsoft s/s wire for bail (can use plain wire or decorative)
Thicker s/s wire for ringband- your choice.
NOTE: 24g means 24 gauge. s/s means sterling silver.
NOTE: You can also use copper, bronze or brass instead of silver. If using bronze wire, use jeweler's grade. You can use brass filigree wire- comes in lots of decorative shapes. (remember to use silver solder with silver).
You are such a gem to provide your outside of the bo playful approach. Seriously it’s so wonderful to listen and watch you as well as being inspirational. Thank you thank you for your generous soul 💥✨
You are so welcome! ❤️❤️❤️ as always
Thank you so very much for sharing Susan!!😂😊 Amazing jewelry! I loved the class!!
You are very welcome. Stay tuned ❤️
Absolutely incredible artist!!!!
Thank you!!! And enjoy ❤
Very good film. Thanks for the inputs ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks so much for the info about sawing. I needed that ❤
Jeweler saw is the foundation of soldering, right? Xx
everything you say is true; wisdomlessonsare woven with excellent instruction; ; terrific teacher, thank you!
I am so glad that you enjoyed the film. ❤️❤️
Great tips. Thank you!
Your welcome! Enjoy !
This is amazing thank you
Thank you for your comment ❤️
QQ, I see you pulling the pieces with your bare hands out of the flux. Isn't it toxic? I am just starting my jeweler's journey and have to be very careful with chemicals so I want to learn as much as I can to feel comfortable and confident when working with all the materials required.
Thanks much for all your content.
You do have to be careful with flux but it is just BORAX. It costs your silver and protects it from getting fire scale.
It is pickle and oxidizers that you have to be careful with.
Enjoy and thanks for the good question
I have NCAS and gave bad reactions to most things. I find borax powder is fine. For pickle I use food grade citric acid in water. You can use mustard powder instead of liver of sulphur.
Love!! ! Your Energy!!! Goddess!
Thank you so much!!❤️❤️
Beautifull. This is the first time I see you working. Realy good ❤️ May I ask you what kind of brush do you use to clean after the pickle ? Obviously you don't damage the filligree band ? I am surprised. Thank you in advance for your answer. 🍀. Mieke
I use a brass brush from Home Depot. I talk about it in an upcoming post because you asked ❤️
Thank you for sharing your experience and advice on this! I'm still struggling with bezel setting and know I need to try more.
BTW, if you'd be so kind, could you provide a link to the video about setting a rose cut gem? A search showed a few different videos that feature the words rose cut gems but I'm not sure which is the one you're referring to as the first. Thanks for your help!!!
The first part is the -art of soldering bezels
The other preparatory video is how to set a rose cut gem
@@SusanLenart Thank you! BTW, I've been to two of your classes -- in Tucson and in the Philly area -- and you are the reason why I keep making jewelry. I will make my bezels better and better as a result. I also love how you use mostly hand tools, which is so effective and simple!
❤
Back at you! ❤️
👑
Yes!!!❤️
I purchased aquiflux after watching your video for the self-pickling property, but it doesn’t seem to work with copper for me? Would you have any suggestions why? I also bought the hard solder and I make sure my metal is clean.
The flux should work well in copper. Yes, just make sure that it is clean. I can work directly with you in my mentored course intentional metalsmithing -this would give you confidence and give you strong skills and techniques. Are you thinking of joining? The course would be perfect for you . Check it out in my profile - xx Susan
I'm having a hard time soldering a filigree wire 24 gauge to a 30 gauge sheet for a bezel . My question is can I work the sheet too many times to where it just can't be worked with anymore?
When you are trying over and over again with no results, I would pickle and literally sand it up a little . This usually works whether the fact is that you are digging deeper to get back to sterling silver rather than fine silver which is created after much heat .
I would love to have you in my intentional metalsmithing course. I am mentoring a small group of people who are ready to advance in technique, quality and community.
You should check it out. Doors close on Thursday. Xx
@@SusanLenart Thank you Susan!! I will try that. I will check out the course - I really am enjoying this new journey!
