One of my favorite Lennon vocal performances is "This Boy." There's a video of them singing it on The Ed Sullivan Show. John, Paul and George are singing a nice harmonic melody, and then Lennon rips into that high, raw voice, immediately lowering his voice and going back to the harmonic melody with the other two. It's awesome! If you watch the video, you see John and Paul continually glancing at each other and smiling, looking like they're having a great time.
Those are all great songs I really wish Harri would react to I'll be back which is one of my all-time favorite Beatles songs. I love the guitars and the harmony between Lennon and McCartney in that song as well as the lyrics.
A great, although rather neglected, early Beatle classic. John kills it on this song. Apparently it was George Martin on the piano. Here's some great Lennon vocals, try "Mr. Moonlight".
Each Beatle has at least one great cover version of a Rock n’ Roll classic. George does a wonderful version of Carl Perkins’ « Everybody’s trying to be my baby ». Ringo does a great job with « Honey don’t », also Carl Perkins. Paul sings « Long tall Sally » by Little Richard. « Kansas City » is another superb performance. John also sings « Bad Boy » and «Slow Down » penned by Larry Williams. « Words of Love » by Buddy Holly is a three-part harmony by John, Paul and George. Ringo sings a great version of Buck Owens’s « Act Naturally », not to mention the unforgettable « Boys ». Worth mentioning is the fact that when they recorded these songs, it took very few takes because they knew them so well. « Please Mr Postman » is another great one as well. Gotta love the « Beatles »❤️
One of the best known Beatles' song is "Twist and Shout", from the beginning of their career, where John did the same type of performance, with which everybody was impressed. Mind you, this was recorded at the end of almost 13 hour long recording session, on which they recorded their first album, and Lennon's vocal is shred to pieces (which brings, actually, a welcomed roughness in this performance).
John also had a cold that day. The winter of 62’-63’ was very cold. They tried a second take but John’s voice gave out. So the version we know and love is take 1. Wow!
Watching the Beatles perform 'Twist and Shout' in late '63 on TV's 'Ready Steady Go' Friday evening destination viewing, I'm pretty sure it was, rather than 'Thank Your Lucky Stars' on Saturday night, finally cemented my ambition to "do that". When I was teaching an after-school rock band program in the late 90s, I sang 'Twist and Shout' on numerous occasions with several different groups of kids, also in the key of 'D', and on one such evening when I was subbing in for the woman who usually led a group of young girls, probably aged 6 to 8 or thereabouts, one asked me at the end, "How do you do that?!" and her friend turned to her and sagely confided, "He yells." lololol
Another of John's one take wonders, with drums and bass on track one, George's lead guitar and John's rhythm on the second track, and John's vocal on the third track. Afterwards John, Paul and George Martin overdubbed the piano on track four, with all three playing a Steinway together. When you've got them doing straight rock'n'roll covers, it gives an idea of what it must have been like to see them live in Liverpool and Hamburg before the screaming drowned them out. It's worth checking out their BBC radio recordings, includes over thirty covers that were never recorded for Parlophone, including things like "Too Much Monkey Business", "Carol", "That's All Right (Mama)", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Johnny B. Goode", "Soldier of Love", "Some Other Guy"...
George Martin played the piano on this song. Even later in life John Lennon did Rock & Roll like in his early Beatles days, check out his solo versions of "Slippin' and Slidin'", "Be Bop a Lula", "Stand By Me" and "Ain't That A Shame".
This music was what John loved most of all, that's why in the '70s he returned to it with his wonderful 'Rock 'N' Roll album. Loved your reaction Harri.
Agreed. Lennon's voice in the early Beatles was unbelievable. Also very very difficult to duplicate. Later Beatles and Lennon solo work was more trippy and in a cloud, sorrowful and reflective. The early Beatles was enthusiastic and more fun. His voice responded
Both of them, John and Paul, had great voices. This was his RnR Music to Paul's Long Tall Sally. Imho But they all could sing. I love when they all harmonize in "This Boy":💙
OK then: Now you can, if you wish, listen to McCartney's rock voice in "I'm Down". Or "She's a Woman", also singing by Paul. They came out in 1965 and 1966. Writers of both: Lennon/McCartney.......
Yeah that one is tight. Try their cover of Smokey Robinsons You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me. John singing lead again. I think they make out their own. Kind of.
I feel as if I’m repeating myself (because I am) when I say I love love love John Lennon’s voice. Oh well….it is what it is! I’m not sure about this one, but George Martin (producer) often played keyboards and piano if Paul wasn’t playing on these older tracks. I’ve always loved this. My only objection is that it’s too short. If you really want to be impressed with John again, you might want to check out an early song called “Mr Moonlight”. It will reach right into your chest and suck the air out! Keep em coming Harri 🥰✌️
As I understand it all done in one take! Hats off to George Martin for his skills on R&R piano - and, like you, I've always thought this was one of Lennon's finest moments.
Harri, what you said @ 4:20 is so exactly spot on! And not only his and any of the others singing, but with each song as a whole too. One completely different than a previous one, on any given album or single release. @ 5:36 Found this about that: "Owing to their familiarity with the song, it took The Beatles just one take to record. The basic track was recorded with drums and bass on track one, two guitars on the second, and Lennon's vocals on track three. Afterwards Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Martin all overdubbed a piano part on a Steinway together." They played this song frequently in Hamburg in the early days. @ 6:22 That's tough for me to answer because I like it all. It gets down to what one is in the mood for, a trippy spacey John on Tomorrow Never Knows, or a reflective one like In My Life, or gritty, playful one in Walrus, or a fun rock n roll one like this one you did. ✌️😎
It was all rock back in those days and The Beatles showed us how to rock. Sir Harri makes the weekends livable with the best channel ever on the Tubes.
😂 you’re great, man! As a Beatle fan since 1976 all I can tell you is that what is happen to you is just the result of becoming a Beatle fan. At the end of the day it’s imposible to say who’s the best vocal, the best song writer, what’s each one’s best performance, what’s your favourite song…. That’s why they are the best. You keep on listening to them and you’ll know what I mean. And 🙏, do “for no one”.
Ya gotta listen to Lennon singing Roll Over Beethoven. Another Chuck Berry classic, which John absolutely Nails. It's kept me going for fifty-five years. I really like your Beatles reactions. They sound totally sincere. The Greatest Rock Band Of All Time! Keep the fire burning, Harri!
My personal Lennon favourite is “In My Life”, which is because the lyrics are so fitting for (my) life and he really sings it from the heart. The song is way too short, like many Beatles songs. 😉
The Beatles cover versions were so good I think even if they didn't write their own songs they would have been popular for a while just doing cover versions. 50s rock is what inspired Lennon to play music so his enjoyment of singing these songs def comes through loud and clear.
This song was ALWAYS one of my favorites. I don't care that it's a cover. Chuck Berry was one of their gods who inspired them to start playing music, period. I totally agree. This song has PERFECT energy. It's a perfect performance. Perfection of the highest degree. The soulful emotion is on par with the best. It's one to hold up and challenge anyone to. It's that same Lennon voice as in "Twist And Shout", another cover i love that they did. Sorry, Chuck. Thanks for the song, but nobody before or since has performed this song as well as they did. The End.
Hi Harri, loving your reactions! Rock and Roll Music was recorded in 1 Take with piano overdub, mainly by George Martin. Other Lennon great vocal performances (you haven't reacted to): All I've got to do, Any time at all, You're going to lose that girl, Ticket to Ride, This boy, Yes it is, Rain, She Said She Said, And your bird can sing, Come Together?.......to mention a few!👍
Another good Lennon rocker thats also a cover, though from a lesser known original artist (Larry Williams), is Slow Down. To me it really highlights why Lennon is such a great rhythm guitarist.
John's passionate vocals on the covers of "Please Mr. Postman" (The Marvelettes), "Baby It's You" (The Shirelles) and "Anna" (Arthur Alexander) are at least as good.
Some more excellent overlooked Beatles songs: All I've got to do, There's a Place, Baby it's You, Not a Second time, I'll Be Back, I Don't want to spoil the party, Every Little Thing, Wait, I'm Only Sleeping, And your bird can sing (again!)......
You can compare it with later vocals as he did a rock'n'roll album. In the 70s Stand by me was the single . I think I would choose that song as his best vocal. You pays your money and you takes your choice Harri lol . I think I am due for some more patron requests soon and I have a John Lenennon I would like you to react to. It is another of Lennon's solo singles 45s
Great cover! You should check out John's solo "Rock & Roll" LP. "Stand By Me" was the single. When John & Yoko co-hosted the Mike Douglas show, they had Chuck Berry on & John introduced him, saying if R&R had a name it'd be Chuck Berry. Some Beatles live LP'S with this song, it's really super fun.
This was a tune that they had performed many times live. Amazingly this was recorded in one take. The piano was overdubbed by John, Paul and George Martin. You should definitely check out "Twist and Shout."
For me his best is still A Day In The Life (totally different tho). Mother by him aswell (I think you reacted to this aswell), and for rockers definitely Twist And Shout or Please Mister Postman. This Boy has great harmonies and great lead vocals of John!
Lennon's best vocals ever for Fab 4? Did you listen - "Twist and Shout"? ..."You Really Got a Hold on Me"?...or "Any Time at All"? Somewhere they are waiting to be discovered.
John's voice was at his strongest in that early-Beatles period. His voice got fainter, less strong, more adult let's say, sounded different ( just as hus looks 😁) during the rest of his carreer. He actually sounded slightly different too on his last recordings...

They probably played this one regularly during their early days in Germany. I bet it was a fan favorite. You probably HAD to cover some Chuck Berry to be taken seriously.
Can you please react to 1.Getting Better 2. Do You Want To Know A Secret 3. Lovely Rita 4. Glass Onion 5. Matchbox 6. Hippy Shake 7. I Saw Her Standing There 8. Twist & Shout 9. Ticket To Ride 10. Baby You're A Rich Man Thanks
Well, I told you many times to do "Rock and Roll Music". You should trust me, you see? ;-) Now I tell you to do "Slow Down" and "Leave My Kitten alone", also both early covers.
Lennon was an absolute original, but, unfortunately, was never completely aware of how great a singer he was. You might enjoy another cover that also appears on Beatles for Sale. Lennon rips into the opening of an obscure American b-side, Mr Moonlight. Not a great song, but an extraordinary vocal.
John's had so many great vocal performances. Give "This Boy" a listen.
Big second on that!
The bridge/middle eight? Outstanding!
That's exactly what I was going to suggest! A great combination of smooth and rough Lennon vocals from the early years.
@@MrDavidReads 👍
@@dunismith3045 👍
Twist and shout! The best!!!
'This Boy' is another fantastic song in their early days. The harmonies are outstanding too.
Another great John's vocal is "Anna,go to him" ,just amazing..As usual great reaction
love Georges guitar on that song
The Beatles were so incredibly strong in the vocal department. Come to think of it , in all departments.
@Briar Mortay yep, there was a reason they became the toppermost of the poppermost!
One of my favorite Lennon vocal performances is "This Boy." There's a video of them singing it on The Ed Sullivan Show. Some other great Lennon vocals: Yes It Is, Ticket To Ride, You're Gonna Lose That Girl, I'll Be Back, You Can't Do That, Baby It's You.
You picked some bangers! ‘You’re Going to Lose That Girl” is at the very top of my fave list. Johnny kills it.
Those are all great songs I really wish Harri would react to I'll be back which is one of my all-time favorite Beatles songs. I love the guitars and the harmony between Lennon and McCartney in that song as well as the lyrics.
my fav is Leave My Kitten Alone
A great, although rather neglected, early Beatle classic. John kills it on this song. Apparently it was George Martin on the piano. Here's some great Lennon vocals, try "Mr. Moonlight".
the piano makes the song for me

He sounds/sings even better on Money (That's what I want).
That's John's rocker voice. Love it!

When I feel just Down for some Reason.... Go to The Beatles..... Rock and Roll Music !!!
Mr Moonlight has some of his best voices.

Great song , great vocals 😅😊 I right their with u man , incredible arrangement full of energy 😅😊
Twist and Shout, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Mr. Moolight... to name a few...
I totally agree with you on John’s voice. He was great!

John Lennon singing anything works for me.
Just. SO. Amazing.
This music was what John loved most of all, that's why in the '70s he returned to it with his wonderful 'Rock 'N' Roll album. Loved your reaction Harri.
All the songs they covered are marvelous, these guys always made of every song of those their own.

Great song all around... Vocal, instruments! It's the Beatles!
The Beatles absolutely blew Chuck Berry away
One of the best Harri, but "Working Class Hero" is my Lennon solo favourite. Keep safe kid and cheerio from Glasgow.
Both of them, John and Paul, had great voices. This was his RnR Music to Paul's Long Tall Sally. Imho But they all could sing. I love when they all harmonize in "This Boy":💙
Yes great voices and their harmonies on This Boy are just beautiful❤️
Mr. Moonlight, please!
John could also sing ballads listen to, to know her is to love her ,from the beatles at the BBC 1963, you might be surprised.
Dont forget Slow Down, Bad Boy, Hey Bulldog, and my favourite, Twist And Shout.
An anytime favourite from the get-go back in early days listening to/watching the Beatles ('62-3-4) in Crawley, Sussex.
OK then: Now you can, if you wish, listen to McCartney's rock voice in "I'm Down". Or "She's a Woman", also singing by Paul. They came out in 1965 and 1966. Writers of both: Lennon/McCartney.......
I'm down... A super one
So so great!❤️
Absolutely True Young man
Love your Beatles' reactions! - Keep it going.
Yeah that one is tight. Try their cover of Smokey Robinsons You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me. John singing lead again. I think they make out their own. Kind of.

One of their longest tracks for that era, though. John used to introduce this song in concerts as “the one that goes on forever.”
As I understand it all done in one take! Hats off to George Martin for his skills on R&R piano - and, like you, I've always thought this was one of Lennon's finest moments.
Listen to "You're Gonna Lose This Girl" too.
Often overlooked gem of theirs that got a pretty fair share of airplay in the early days.
Harri, what you said @ 4:20 is so exactly spot on! And not only his and any of the others singing, but with each song as a whole too. I totally get you
You're absolutely right. Lennon's early vocals were the best!
It was all rock back in those days and The Beatles showed us how to rock. Sir Harri makes the weekends livable with the best channel ever on the Tubes.
The afro American Chuck berry wrote rock and roll music in the 50's. The beatles played it well.
😂 you’re great, man! As a Beatle fan since 1976 all I can tell you is that what is happen to you is just the result of becoming a Beatle fan. Twist and Shout is another excellent vocal performance on an Isley Brothers song.
Keep up the Beatles reactions,Harri………..Best channel easily for the Beatles songs 👏👌
Lennon is best vocal on Beatles!! SWEET LITTLE SIXTEEN in Hamburg 1962: John Lennon rulles!!! Ever!!
The Beatles cover versions were so good I think even if they didn't write their own songs they would have been popular for a while just doing cover versions. 50s rock is what inspired Lennon to play music so his enjoyment of singing these songs def comes through loud and clear.
LENNON TOOK HIS INSPIRATION FROM THE EARLY ROCK N ROLL SINGERS THAT'S WHERE HIS PASSION COMES FROM BUT YES HE IS AN INCREDIBLE VOCALIST
The Beatles for Sale album is the most underrated Beatles album. What a great album. Please react to Im a Loser
I really love John singing 'Julia', about his Mum. Not rock, just dreamy, mystical and filled with longing.
Try “I Feel Fine “ for a great John lead
Fantastic summary
There’s a video out there of John on a TV show in 1972 doing a duet with Chuck Berry on “Memphis” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Fun to watch.
''Leave My Kitten Alone'' from the Anthology Album. Money and Twist and Shout , the closing tracks from With the Beatles and Please Please Me Albums.
My favourite Lennon vocal is on Soldier Of Love.
It's one to hold up and challenge anyone to. beatles confidence
Absolutely the Beatles at their early best. It oozes excitement about the subject, sadly the Chuck Berry original pales in comparison.
Hi Harry, Lennon, Harrison and McCartney had the best voices in Rock n Roll!!! ...and most people don’t like their own voice!!!🎼👌🎶👍 🎵✌️😁
My favourite parts are the style switches in the verses.
Give „Anna (go to him)“ a try. One of my favourites when it comes John vocals. Along with „Mr Moonlight“ and „Girl“
This was a tune that they had performed many times live. Amazingly this was recorded in one take. The piano was overdubbed by John, Paul and George Martin. You should definitely check out "Twist and Shout."
There was a reason for Beatlemania!
You must listen to John singing "This boy".
For me his best is still A Day In The Life (totally different tho). Mother by him aswell (I think you reacted to this aswell), and for rockers definitely Twist And Shout or Please Mister Postman. This Boy has great harmonies and great lead vocals of John!
you should see the video of him singing this
“ Yer Blues”
Lennon's best vocals ever for Fab 4? Did you listen - "Twist and Shout"? ..."You Really Got a Hold on Me"?...or "Any Time at All"? Somewhere they are waiting to be discovered.
Yes! And from the newer ones, how about “Across the Universe”?
I'm not sure if you have listened to Mother by John but it's his most passionate song I've ever heard him do
I did react to it
My bad.. Carry on with your groovy work, 😊
You couldn't stop the video. It's almost like they were blowin' like a hurricane.
for some reason I like the Beatles covers of the Chuck Berry tunes better then the originals
have you heard his version of mr moonlight, try it he is fantastic singing that too.
John's voice was at his strongest in that early-Beatles period. His voice got fainter, less strong, more adult let's say, sounded different ( just as hus looks 😁) during the rest of his carreer. He actually sounded slightly different too on his last recordings...
I think you're digging those new over-the-ear headphones. I have only speakers but it is sounding so much better than during the analog days which is the majority of my memory. I am picking up clarity and positional cues that are delightful.
SuperTech😀
Show my the Money.
I don't know which song contains his best vocal, but, for me, John is the best rock and roll singer of all time!
I believe the piano was Lennon AND McCartney AND George Martin.
Interesting song: Yer blues and Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues
great observations, mate! MIght have been Paul on piano --- or Geo Martin
Please Mr Postman could be your second favourite!
George Martin was the one on the piano. He played the piano a lot on the early Beatles song, until, of course, the guys took that over as well.
"Anna".
They probably played this one regularly during their early days in Germany. I bet it was a fan favorite. You probably HAD to cover some Chuck Berry to be taken seriously.
There is a 'Live at the BBC' (1964) version which may be as close as you can get.
Can you please react to
1.Getting Better
2. Do You Want To Know A Secret
3. Lovely Rita
4. Glass Onion
5. Matchbox
6. Hippy Shake
7. I Saw Her Standing There
8. Twist & Shout
9. Ticket To Ride
10. Baby You're A Rich Man

Well, I told you many times to do "Rock and Roll Music". You should trust me, you see? ;-)
Now I tell you to do "Slow Down" and "Leave My Kitten alone", also both early covers.
You got my trust! 😀

Neapolitan Ice cream.
I agree with Peter Blood… try Mr. Moonlight!
I hate that song!! Really horrible. Messed up harmonies, etc. They didn't wanna do it. Brian Epstein had them do it.
