Oh yes, definitely 60's music and Motown/Smokey Robinson, writer/and the one and only Mary Wells!! This was Motown's first number 1 hit single on the Billboard 100/May 16, 1964. This song was played on the radio a LOT. I Loved it then and love it to this day! I'm glad you're enjoying many of my favorite oldies. I was 13 yrs old in 1964. I know you appreciate the originality, productions and the immense library of music that is there for you to discover and enjoy.
Another great Motown song, number 1 in 1964. I don't remember hearing this on Martin, but the nuns choir in Sister Act did a version singing My God instead of My Guy. It was very good.
on the Motown label but "Please Mr. Postman" by the Marvelettes on Tamla was Motown Record Corp. first #1 POP hit. Mary Wells had 2 prior R & B #1 hits with "You Beat Me To The Punch" & "Two Lovers".
MARY WELLS is one of the GREATEST singers in Rock & Soul History. She had many hits & put the Motown Record Corp. on the map.She first broke out in 1961 with a song she wrote "Bye Bye Baby" at 16 years old. Then she hit with "The One Who Really Loves You" , "You Beat Me To The Punch" , "Two Lovers", "You Lost The Sweetest Boy" & "My Guy". She also had a 2 sided hit duet with Marvin Gaye "Whats The Matter With You Baby" & "Once Upon a Time". She turned 21 & was wondering "where is all the money" so she left Motown for a $300,000. advance from 20th Century Fox but their record company was new & did not know how to properly promote a Rock & Soul artist.
For those of us old enough to remember, this song appeared on “ Happy Days.” In the episode where Joanie & Cha Chi had broken up & got back together at Arnold’s. Such an amazing song that withstood the test of time ❤ 🎶
Classic Motown 1964,written by William"Smokey " Robinson for Mary Wells. This was the beauty of Motown, the melodies of these songs were so varied, they simply put a bounce in.your stride. This is the kind of song you could hear at a fashion show,Lol.I year later Smokey would write My Girl and put The Temptations on the road to international fame making them the greatest r&b/soul group ever. Lyrical genius.
Except the opening where Whoopi sings the exact song, which is how she had the nuns sing it later with the change. That's likely the most famous usage of the song in a movie and TV show to date. Even if you're not familiar with the exact song, if you seen Sister Act, then you definitely know about it.
One of the greatest songs to ever come out of Motown, and they had a whole Lotta hits with Mary Wells just knock this out of the park. And the lyrics are great
Smokey Robinson wrote and produced this memorable #1 hit (1964) and a bit later wrote the equally successful "My Girl" as an answer song to this. Motown's Berry Gordy thought an answer song was a bit much but Smokey persisted and produced another all-time classic.
😂I was just playing this awesome song by Ms. Mary Wells!💖💖I absolutely looovvve anything coming outta Motown my hometown The big “D” yaaassss!! Let’s get it!! Thanks JJ!!👌🏽👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🤩🤩
Why did I know that this request came from you Mother Pop before J even saw it? Thanks for a wonderful pick. Brings back real good memories. I love Smokey written songs! 👍🏽❤️😉 Great reaction J! You are an old soul. 👍🏽😉☮️
Probably one of the biggest & most recognizable Motown records. Can only imagine how many times this song has been used in movies sitcoms commercials.JJ you're comments were spot on 👍👍✌️
A number of TV series have used this song. Among them: The Simpsons ("The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons" - 1997) Friends ("The One with Mrs. Bing" - 1995) The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ("Stop Will! in the Name of Love" - 1994) Quantum Leap ("Jimmy - October 14, 1964" - 1989) Growing Pains ("Dance Fever: Part 2" - 1988)
It’s one of those songs that you know the lyrics and you don’t quite know why or exactly where you know it from. Maybe it was played so much by my mother or uncles that it just stuck😍🥰😌 nice request and reaction ✨👍🏿
GREAT REACTION......thanks MP glad to see you still coming with the FIRE....JJ there is a lot of history to this song.....this song was Motown's very first # 1 hit in 1964 and put the company on the map nationallly and worldwide.....Mary is known as the mother of Motown.....yes she was the first to.hit # 1 before all the other super Motown acts to follow.....Mary had a harder and more soulful sound than most of Motown female acts of that time.....my favorite by her is "You Beat Me To The Punch"..... hope you react to that one but she has many great hits....RIP Mary
Mary never really got the full attention from Motown CEO/founder/leader Berry Gordy since he gave all attention to Diana Ross, who was his mistress at that time ,and her group Supremes. At Motown this was i believe her only hit.
@@danielolson5378 no problem, Mary been my fave singer since I bought her first record "Bye, Bye Baby" in 1961, when I was 12 I got to meet Mary at the hotel in Miami the whole Motortown Revue was staying at. We were life long friends.
Mary did get a lot of attention at Motown. Before My Guy Mary had already been having several top 40 hits many written by Smokey Robinson. while the Supremes were still a no hit group. When My Guy hit #1 the Supremes still did not have a big hit yet. Mary decided to leave Motown right after My Guy hit #1 and that is when Gordy and Motown turned their attention to the Supremes.

This was Motown records first #1 hit nationally (pop charts). Written by Smokey Robinson. Mary Wells started it all.

This song was used in the 1992 movie Sister Act, with the line "My Guy" replaced with "My God" to turn it into a gospel song.

For 60’s oldies. Mary Wells is probably my favorite female singer with Dee Dee Sharp following closely.

She had a great library: You Beat Me to the Punch, Two Lovers, Old Love, The One Who Really Loves You, Your Old Standby, and more...
The vocals are so flawlessly sung by Mary! Such an all time favorite! A timeless gold standard classic! Great request & reaction!
Motown was a global event. A true form of Afro American culture spreading the globe. Extending influence beyond jazz…
Aaaaaahhhhhh, that old MOTOWN MAGIC!!!! There was a scene in the show, "A Different World," where Whitley Glbert was singing it!! It was hilarious!!!
One of the greatest songs to ever come out of Motown, and they had a whole Lotta hits with Mary Wells just knock this out of the park. And the lyrics are great
I remember the movie sister act when Whoopi Goldberg's character had the choir singing this song lol. This is another Motown classic.
It's a feel good song. Makes you want to smile and dance.
Mary Wells! You can not have an oldies cd without something by Mary Wells!

Mary had MANY hits....this just happens to be her biggest and most well known hit.....also Motown as a company first # 1 in 1964
Motown did not promote the Supremes until Mary left the company.Mary Wells had Berry Gordys' full attention.
@@tonyrussi7777 You're right i looked it up and i stand corrected. My original "source" of information was wrong. Thanks for correcting.
