The riff is very original but you can hear the influence of ZZ Top. La Grange was a song they covered before making it big and you hear that in this riff.
Everyone that every played his rig said, "Wait, I just sound like me" expecting to sound massive. The brown sound is his fingers. Stevie Ray Vaughn, same thing. To sound like EVH or SVR you have to BE them.

But, Page could never come anywhere close to this in his playing. He's a much different style. Much more bluesy. His fingers just don't work in the same way. He WAS an influence on Eddie. Absolutely. No doubt. But, Page simply never played anything like this.
Eddie’s rhythm playing was as good as his lead solo’s. One track front to back. Producer Ted Templeman said when EVH came into the studio, he never made mistakes.

I was not aware that it was a Flying V either. That said, I believe Top Jimmy was recorded with a Kramer Ripley Stereo (each string had its own volume). Tres cool.
The whole thing is just amazing. The song is just pure guitar at its best. I really don’t think any song has a rhythm and solo that are just impeccable to music. A true artist at work. It’s takes hours and hours for a great guitar player to write a solo. Eddy would do it in 15 minutes.
The man was a musical genius. Pay your respects. God loves Eddie Van Halen and I hope to jam with him into eternity someday when my time comes too. The man gave us the recipe. God bless his soul.

Noone plays rhythm like Eddie. That fast paced blues has so much swagger. Also, absolutely love when he slows it down and hybrid picks that one part, so badass.
I actually watched a TH-cam video of that disgusting fat body the other day. Crosby doesn’t even deserve a “meh”. His guitar playing sounds like bird shit, he does not have a singing voice, he wasn’t prepared, he’s not close to a professional musician, and he really should say nothing at all, if he doesn’t have something good to say about the likes of Eddie Van Halen. He is the guitar god of all time. I don’t have enough time, to list all of the things, that he could do really well. Fat boy Crosby, keep your mouth shut. He was more than a rock and roll guitar player. He was a master musician. I have trouble finding the words to explain how impressive his technique, sound and rhythms are. He just makes you shake your head and ask “How does he do it?”

I think his training as a pianist and having an example of "groove" like that of his father Jan in the house, to jam with, sculpted his understanding of music in a very unique way. While most people gravitate toward someone like Benny Goodman where clarinet is concerned, his dad was truly badass on his wind instrument. "Big Bad Bill" - the clarinet in that song is every bit as creative in its construction as Eddie's guitar playing. Signature groove. Impeccable timing. He had the distinct privilege of growing up with an orthodox piano teacher for a mother, and a big band, clarinet playing groove monster for a father. All he needed was a love of music, which we all know, ran thru his heart and soul like a lifeblood.
Interesting to hear that isolated. Never really noticed that Ed had his toggle switch in the neck position for the "intro verse" or whatever you call it and his gain was lower than usual. Brings back memories of learning to play it in my bedroom back in 85. Thanks for that. I loved Eddie SO much growing up! He will never be forgotten.
I'm not an expert on EVH's guitars, but I'm pretty certain the single coil in the neck position on the red-striped "Frankenstrat" was a dummy and not actually wired to anything.
Yes. On the frankenstrat. This is true. I believe he played an Gibson explorer that was borrowed from friend Chris Holmes on this album. Also, he just rolled down the volume at the appropriate time for the "clean" sound. With the volume rolled back, the output gain of the guitar is much less, thus a cleaner sound. I do the same when I play. No footswitch
This song was my intro to Van Halen and Eddie. I was telling my son today what a totally insane experience it was for a 14 year old me, starting out playing the electric guitar, to later hear Eruption for the first time. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and almost wore the tape out calling everyone I knew to play it to them over the phone. Most of them didn't appreciate it and only recognized Eddie's name because this was the year the first Back to the Future film came out! Rest in peace man. Thanks for the music EVH - the world is an emptier place without you in it.
These isolated tracks of Eddie's guitar playing are just off the charts nuts! One thing most people miss is Eddie's incredible groove while playing all this crazy amazing stuff, even the solos. Hendrix was the same way.

There's a percussive element to Eddie's playing. That's because he started out on piano, then went to drums years before he ever picked up a guitar. He's playing the piano on a guitar. That's where that bottom end thump comes from. Incredible depth in that tone.
I am still crying over his passing. There will never be anyone like him -the talent, the joy, the performance, the humility. He had it all rolled up in an impish package that was impossible not to love. I was lucky to have grown up with his music and for that I am forever grateful.
I think he is the best of all-time. Bombastic, balls-to-the-wall, aggressive and fun at the same time. It's also kinda sneaky--you don't realize how many intricate the parts are sometimes.
Not many lead players can play rhythm like Eddie can. IMO that's what separates him from most other guitarists. He can play scorching leads, but also play melodic rhythms that rival his best leads. The guy is a musical genius.
brilliant, eddie was one of a kind, nobody like him... aside from his brilliant chops and innovations, eddie always put the music first, he had a bag of tricks nobody had ever heard before, but he didn't just stand up there and noodle for an hour, he played in a band, and made all his tricks musical, part of the music, part of the song... not the other way around... eddie wasn't your typical guitar god showing you how he could tap, pinch harmonics, dive bomb, and shred, it wasn't a guitar clinic for eddie, he wasn't doing tricks for sake of doing tricks. eddie was all about van halen, the band, the music, the song... and his body of work speaks for itself... rip eddie. you will be missed, but your music will live forever.
Exactly that is what separates the greats from the posers! The greats focus primarily on the song and main melodies and perfect rhythm playing. Everything else they play is to spice up the song and give it energy and make it sound bad azz!

It's the originality that made Eddie stand out. isolate a lot of other tracks and you'll hear a whole lot less going on in a basic Rock track. It wasn't his finger tapping but his rhythmic skills that really made him shine. And he applied that rhythmic sensibility to his solos.
As much as i miss his playing, i think what i miss the most is the joy on his face when he was playing. Dude had his demons but damn that smile was about as infectious as they come. Rest easy eddie and thanks for sharing what you loved to do with us mortals

@@Van020280 The variac was to reduce the voltage so the amp wouldn't be so loud when turned all the way up. Allowed the amp to produce two stages of distortion in series. Still not very much gain.
The amount of detail and work that went into his playing is incredible! This was a labor of love! No one else in history seemed happier with a guitar in his hands than Eddie!
Im not lying, I can hear a grin in that guitar performance. You can hear his joy and playfulness. God, thanks man for sharing your gift. PS I was 15 in 1984, drummer, and in a band with my buddy when he came to school, somehow, with the brand new tape of the 1984 album.(I actually think he ditched school during the lunch hour to run to the record store! There's no other way to produce it in the middle of the day, at school?) (We kept staring at the cover during choir practice) After we listened a bit, I begged him to loan me the tape, just to hear the rest, then give it right back. I still can't believe he did, and I was such a jerk I kept it forever!! I knew it was so wrong, his brand new tape (and he was the guitarist in the band) I just couldn't stop listening, every song, and he knew it too. That's a great friend! We played tons of gigs, lots of love and little fights like that. Goddamn! (Before I had a double bass set, I learned how to play it with my right hand stick, and right foot, on the kick head. . . Years later I subbed with a band, that song came up. They were in shock when I pulled that outa my ass!) I digress. thanks EVH for sharing your artistry, and light and defining a key part of my life, what a time!!!!!
I will say it a million times, and mean it everytime Being a guitarist myself, I know what EVH was to me. Everyone else here knows what he meant to them. You can throw out all the superlatives you want about The Master, but there is never going to be an argument about his mastery of his chosen art. No else had players around the planet going "What the F is that". From his grin to his fingers Eddie was born to bring us joy through his expression of his art, and you can thank whatever god you believe in that he shared his joy with us. ALWAYS #1 UNPARALLELED. When the master emerged, from the opening chords of you really got me, every player knew the sonic landscape was changed in a way that was unheard of up to that time. Eruption smashed his foot onto your throat daring you to try to emulate him. No one can. There was never anyone like him, and there will never be another, and I miss his artistry.
I was always impressed by this chord at 0:45. It is very beautiful the way he manages to get there, and lasts just a brief second. I was shocked the first time I've heard it. Never seen anything remotely close to that.

As someone who grew up listening to Van Halen, I, like everyone else was always in awe when it came to Eddie’s mastery of the guitar. But after all this time, hearing this isolated track leaves me just as flabbergasted as when I first heard Eruption all those years ago. The man was truly a ‘once in a lifetime phenom’. This track shows it. I feel so fortunate to have lived on this earth when the great EVH lived and performed
Funny how this is the part you listen too throughout the whole song with all parts playing. Although the only time I felt something was missing...it was where Alex had perfect timing beating the drums.
Actually, there might be an explanation. His mother was an orthodox piano teacher. His father was a big band, clarinet playing groove monster. Between the two, music in the home would always demonstrate foundational structure accompanied with creative imagination. That combination is contagiously fun! Both Eddie and Alex loved music, I believe, as a direct result of who their parents were. Music was the lifeblood of their parents and their household. Having two great examples, aiding in the development of a love for music, for parents... it's not a wonder that both went on to be incredibly accomplished musicians.
Not only does it sound like 1 take. He didn't record a second one to beef up the sound like a lot of guys do. One guitar track is what we got and we are thankful for that.
I love this. In the first transition from clean to distortion you can hear him click into his distortion channel on his pedal. Now stuff like that gets chopped out without a second thought.
I love the slippery notes that flirt with time. Sign of a master musician just like an artist who creates tension and release dont forget about dynamics also grasshopper
It's amazing how much of the whole song do we get just with Eddie's guitar.... Usually there are silents part relying on other members instruments when isolating one like this. But in this case, add a drum and you are pretty much done. AMAZING !
I am still sad, we have lost a Genius Musician Who single handedly changed the guitar. Since Van Halen first was heard, it Turned every guitarist Upside down to say "you can do that on guitar? That was the biggest surprise for me listening to this. A bit of overdrive and done. Incredible player.

I actually watched a TH-cam video of that disgusting fat body the other day. Crosby doesn’t even deserve a “meh”. His guitar playing sounds like bird shit, he does not have a singing voice, he wasn’t prepared, he’s not close to a professional musician, and he really should say nothing at all, if he doesn’t have something good to say about the likes of Eddie Van Halen. He is the guitar god of all time. I don’t have enough time, to list all of the things, that he could do really well. Fat boy Crosby, keep your mouth shut. The majority of people that know who you are don’t like you anyway. Your numbers are climbing. Give it a rest!

He was more than a rock and roll guitar player. He was a master musician. I have trouble finding the words to explain how impressive his technique, sound and rhythms are. He just makes you shake your head and ask “How does he do it?”

I think his training as a pianist and having an example of "groove" like that of his father Jan in the house, to jam with, sculpted his understanding of music in a very unique way. While most people gravitate toward someone like Benny Goodman where clarinet is concerned, his dad was truly badass on his wind instrument. "Big Bad Bill" - the clarinet in that song is every bit as creative in its construction as Eddie's guitar playing. Signature groove. Impeccable timing. He had the distinct privilege of growing up with an orthodox piano teacher for a mother, and a big band, clarinet playing groove monster for a father. All he needed was a love of music, which we all know, ran thru his heart and soul like a lifeblood.

Interesting to hear that isolated. Never really noticed that Ed had his toggle switch in the neck position for the "intro verse" or whatever you call it and his gain was lower than usual. Brings back memories of learning to play it in my bedroom back in 85. Thanks for that. I loved Eddie SO much growing up! He will never be forgotten.
I'm not an expert on EVH's guitars, but I'm pretty certain the single coil in the neck position on the red-striped "Frankenstrat" was a dummy and not actually wired to anything.

This is true. I believe he played an Gibson explorer that was borrowed from friend Chris Holmes on this album. Also, he just rolled down the volume at the appropriate time for the "clean" sound. With the volume rolled back, the output gain of the guitar is much less, thus a cleaner sound. I do the same when I play. No footswitch

If I’m not mistaken I believe that sound is just him rolling off the volume on his distorted tones and using the same pickup.
I heard him say once that he used a 58 Flying V on this track. ✌️

This song was my intro to Van Halen and Eddie. I was telling my son today what a totally insane experience it was for a 14 year old me, starting out playing the electric guitar, to later hear Eruption for the first time. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and almost wore the tape out calling everyone I knew to play it to them over the phone. Most of them didn't appreciate it and only recognized Eddie's name because this was the year the first Back to the Future film came out! Rest in peace man. Thanks for the music EVH - the world is an emptier place without you in it.

These isolated tracks of Eddie's guitar playing are just off the charts nuts! One thing most people miss is Eddie's incredible groove while playing all this crazy amazing stuff, even the solos. Hendrix was the same way.

I've actually never realized how much swing is involved in evh riffs. They're almost, or maybe even impossible to replicate
There's a percussive element to Eddie's playing. That's because he started out on piano, then went to drums years before he ever picked up a guitar. He's playing the piano on a guitar. That's where that bottom end thump comes from. Incredible depth in that tone.
I am still crying over his passing. There will never be anyone like him -the talent, the joy, the performance, the humility. He had it all rolled up in an impish package that was impossible not to love. I was lucky to have grown up with his music and for that I am forever grateful.

I think he is the best of all-time. Bombastic, balls-to-the-wall, aggressive and fun at the same time. It's also kinda sneaky--you don't realize how many intricate the parts are sometimes.
When I hear isolated tracks from other players, they sound weak compared to Eddie. He has such a strong command of the guitar. F ing awesome.
Not many lead players can play rhythm like Eddie can. IMO that's what separates him from most other guitarists. He can play scorching leads, but also play melodic rhythms that rival his best leads. The guy is a musical genius.

brilliant, eddie was one of a kind, nobody like him... aside from his brilliant chops and innovations, eddie always put the music first, he had a bag of tricks nobody had ever heard before, but he didn't just stand up there and noodle for an hour, he played in a band, and made all his tricks musical, part of the music, part of the song... not the other way around...
eddie wasn't your typical guitar god showing you how he could tap, pinch harmonics, dive bomb, and shred, it wasn't a guitar clinic for eddie, he wasn't doing tricks for sake of doing tricks. eddie was all about van halen, the band, the music, the song... and his body of work speaks for itself... rip eddie. you will be missed, but your music will live forever.
Exactly that is what separates the greats from the posers! The greats focus primarily on the song and main melodies and perfect rhythm playing. Everything else they play is to spice up the song and give it energy and make it sound bad azz!
Was blessed to have eddies music since I was 13. Hard to believe that is genius is no longer with us. How can so much talent and greatness just disappear into the ether forever? Rip evh. You will always be loved and missed by so many people.

Absolutely amazing! First time to hear it separately after decades of listening to this and heard so many nuances I never realized were there. My number one guitar hero since 1978 and forever.
1:13 you can clearly hear the sound when he activates the distorsion switch with his foot. That means that it was mostly recorded in one take.
That would have just been going to his bridge pickup and diming the guitar volume.
He had the look, the skills, the soul, the brains and the desire to give the world something very few musicians can. I'm so glad I can to age with Van Halen. End of a generation. Who will take the torch from here?

It's the originality that made Eddie stand out. isolate a lot of other tracks and you'll hear a whole lot less going on in a basic Rock track. It wasn't his finger tapping but his rhythmic skills that really made him shine. And he applied that rhythmic sensibility to his solos.

the first van halen tone its just a marshall plexi, thats the original brown sound, its not a high gain amp after all

@@darthshaggy9970 ...pushed with a variac and then the front end boosted with an MXR EQ pedal... So yeah it actually was a high gain sound for the time.
@@Van020280 The variac was to reduce the voltage so the amp wouldn't be so loud when turned all the way up. Allowed the amp to produce two stages of distortion in series. Still not very much gain.
The amount of detail and work that went into his playing is incredible! This was a labor of love!

I was 15 in 1984, drummer, and in a band with my buddy when he came to school, somehow, with the brand new tape of the 1984 album.(I actually think he ditched school during the lunch hour to run to the record store! There's no other way to produce it in the middle of the day, at school?) (We kept staring at the cover during choir practice)
After we listened a bit, I begged him to loan me the tape, just to hear the rest, then give it right back.
I still can't believe he did, and I was such a jerk I kept it forever!! I knew it was so wrong, his brand new tape (and he was the guitarist in the band) I just couldn't stop listening, every song, and he knew it too.
That's a great friend! We played tons of gigs, lots of love and little fights like that. Goddamn!
(Before I had a double bass set, I learned how to play it with my right hand stick, and right foot, on the kick head. . . Years later I subbed with a band, that song came up. They were in shock when I pulled that outa my ass!)

I will say it a million times, and mean it everytime Being a guitarist myself, I know what EVH was to me. Everyone else here knows what he meant to them. You can throw out all the superlatives you want about The Master, but there is never going to be an argument about his mastery of his chosen art. No else had players around the planet going "What the F is that". From his grin to his fingers Eddie was born to bring us joy through his expression of his art, and you can thank whatever god you believe in that he shared his joy with us.

When the master emerged, from the opening chords of you really got me, every player knew the sonic landscape was changed in a way that was unheard of up to that time. Eruption smashed his foot onto your throat daring you to try to emulate him. No one can.
There was never anyone like him, and there will never be another, and I miss his artistry.
Eddie will be remembered for a long time by many guitar players.
I was always impressed by this chord at 0:45. It is very beautiful the way he manages to get there, and lasts just a brief second. I was shocked the first time I've heard it. Never seen anything remotely close to that.
My god, how great is this? One of the best songs and solos of all time.

As someone who grew up listening to Van Halen, I, like everyone else was always in awe when it came to Eddie’s mastery of the guitar. But after all this time, hearing this isolated track leaves me just as flabbergasted as when I first heard Eruption all those years ago. The man was truly a ‘once in a lifetime phenom’. This track shows it. I feel so fortunate to have lived on this earth when the great EVH lived and performed
Funny how this is the part you listen too throughout the whole song with all parts playing. Although the only time I felt something was missing...it was where Alex had perfect timing beating the drums.

Actually, there might be an explanation. His mother was an orthodox piano teacher. His father was a big band, clarinet playing groove monster. Between the two, music in the home would always demonstrate foundational structure accompanied with creative imagination. That combination is contagiously fun! Both Eddie and Alex loved music, I believe, as a direct result of who their parents were. Music was the lifeblood of their parents and their household. Having two great examples, aiding in the development of a love for music, for parents... it's not a wonder that both went on to be incredibly accomplished musicians.

I love this. In the first transition from clean to distortion you can hear him click into his distortion channel on his pedal. Now stuff like that gets chopped out without a second thought.
