  • John Barry’s elegiac score and Freddie Young’s improbably beautiful photography combine to make Lewis Gilbert’s 1967 film the most glamorous of Sean Connery’s Bond outings. An action-packed travelogue set within neon-soaked Tokyo and the storybook environs of the Japanese countryside, 007 plays cat and mouse with Donald Pleasance’s Blofeld in a volcano that doubles as a launching pad. Godzilla fans will recognize Akiko Wakabayashi and Mie Hama while Krimi aficianados are treated to Karin Dor as a duplicitous femme fatale.

    Not only was it my favorite Bond movie, it is one of my favorite movies. This was the first Bond film I saw in a theater. I was 7! My parents bought the soundtrack record. When it came on TV, I watched it every time. It had EVERYTHING a kid like me wanted to see. Space kidnappings and astronauts. An insane villain with a lair inside a volcano. A helicopter battle. Car chases....that Toyota 2000GT. The post war, super modern Japan and all the gadgets. And a great score. It had it all. Exotic, exciting, surreal, and most important, what all the newer Bond movies are missing, is that it was incredibly fun.

    Excellent, informative commentary. Ken Adam's giant sets were spectacular and even us kids loved them, the music, the action, and the poster art.

    I saw this movie in my local theater as part of a double bill. Earlier, it had been re-released as a double bill with "Thunderball". My theater showed YOLT and "Diamonds Are Forever". They had the poster from the older double bill, so they just taped over the "Thunderball" bit with a handwritten "DAF" piece of paper. All to say that I first saw YOLT, DAF and Live and Let Die theatrically before I ever saw them on TV.
    I can still hear the applause when Bond ran over the crocodiles in "...Die".

    What you missed in the video is John Barry's song and theme are the best of all Bond films (second is "You Know My Name" for "Casino Royale"). Barry's music was profoundly haunting in the way Barry was known for, and with an Asian musical flair to it as well. Ken Adam's main set is still better than any set in any other Bond film.

    Nancy Sinatra's title song is fabulous, second only to Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger.

    • @ChordtoChord
      @ChordtoChord 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely, it is almost a remake of the haunting Shirley Basse classic. Nancy Sinatra knew she did not really have the chops to pull the song off. But the producers cobbled together a fine performance from many different takes.
      In one sense the song "You Only Live Twice" is better than "Goldfinger". Because the lyrics are about all of us. Not just the characters in the movie.

    YOLT is definitely a comedown from previous Bond movies -- Ken Adam's sets are a knockout, and John Barry contributes another memorable score, but Connery was clearly bored with the role by this time and Donald Pleasance makes for an unintentionally funny villain (Blofeld was most effective when he could be heard but not seen, re: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and THUNDERBALL). The first non-Connery Bond that followed was a real step up from this bloated but underwhelming effort.

    • @ricardocantoral7672
      @ricardocantoral7672 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. YOLT has some great moments, fantastic sets, a fantastic score by John Barry, and stellar cinematography. However, it's very uneven and the whole "turning Japanese" thing was not particularly well done. On Her Majesty's Secret Service was a huge step up and in terms of cinematic craftsmanship, it's my favorite Bond movie.

    Yes, the script for this film was written by the same guy who wrote Charlie And The Chocolate Factory........which kinda tracks. I mean, Oompa Loompa sounds a lot like the name of a Bond girl.
    "Guten tag, Herr Bond. I am Oompa Loompa."
    "For some reason, my penis is afraid of you. Gotta go." 🤪

    😂 you're right... it's not the best Bond, it's the worst of the Connery's...(who's the only true 007..) ✈️ the title song is great...
    It's got a couple of good scenes, my favorite being the fight in the building when he takes the place of the villain in the car.
    But the finale, the end, feels artificial... with the jumping props...Little Nelly is not so hot either...
    And the strangest continuity problem is when they reach the volcano and he sends the girl to warn the others. The next minute he's in full gear with hand bombs etc. BUT they carry NOTHING on the way to the volcano, where did he get the equipment from?🐸
