  • Little has been done for adults with FASD in Australia. This video is the first of several videos for adults with FASD. This one tells of the issues that are likely to crop up for adults with FASD with a guest speaker who has FASD explaining a strategy he has found helpful.

Seths video was very helpful for me... I was able to relate to his thoughts and I'm a very very positive person but I've known many moments where my minds gone to suicide and depression and going over and over things in my room (I got into body building in the gym for years because it saved me from my mind) I also struggle to write because my mind makes me write letters and numbers that aren't soposed to be there, thank you for this so much ❤

I can emphasize with you, my walls look a TV evidence room. Paper written all over with all my thoughts so I won't forget, pinned to the wall so I can find it. But remember your strengths.

Please, please keep on getting information out there!
I have been wondering for a long time what was different about her. My childhood with her wasn’t pretty. I was an adult before really putting together that the way she raised us was some type of developmental issue and Vey aware that her mother was a hardcore alcoholic.
Looking back my mother never modeled or taught us basic hygiene, basic cleaning skills, social skills, had no social relationships and a past of how her best friend beat her up. She offered minimal conversation and it was always focused on her self or her past and Never graduated to a back and forth conversation. Her diet was limited to McDonald’s (the same thing) and maybe 10 other items. She very rarely explored past that. I could go on but I guess the rant I’m on is how she wasn’t diagnosed with anything in her life. With all the difficulties she had going on imagine her being the only constant in the lives of her twin daughters and son only 18 months older. Looking back I realize the other adults in our life could’ve seen the lack of skills and teach her or provide more support for her to be a decent parent but then again without knowing of any disability there is no intervention or supportive services.
I wish she would’ve sought out a diagnosis while she was still alive, the pain of not understanding why my mom failed to be there for me in any positive way has caused me to seek understanding. Nothing I looked into fit the glove super well. Narcissism - she wasn’t evil, she never wished bad upon anyone... for a long time ASD hit many points and So did FASD except I didn’t think she fit the facial feature criteria and until stumbling upon this video had concluded I just won’t ever really know. Until now. You have explained how the glove fits and words can’t express my gratitude to finally feel some peace and understanding of what adults with FASD may struggle with in daily life. DSM criteria doesn’t give anyone the insight.

Im so sorry this has been your experience Gshkent. You and your siblings must have had a difficult time. Yes FASD is so much more prevalent than most of us realise. People who have been and are considered childish, self centered, annoying, and every other epithet we can think of could possibly have a neurodevelopmental condition. FASD is a hidden epidemic everywhere in the world that alcohol is used. If you need more information our channel has a number of videos on FASD. Take care of yourself.

My wife was a Russian orphan and has FASD. My biggest concern is her cancer risk. She's only 100lbs and she smokes cigarettes too and I'm worried that even if she quits she will get ovarian cancer because I read that FASD increases that risk too but there's not much info about that I can find. I love her so much and I know the life expectancy is only 34 due preventable causes like suicide but I'm wondering if cancer is also a major factor?

Hi Jack Like you, I haven't heard much about the cancer risk for people with FASD. I know some older people with FASD who have been healthy all their lives. She is lucky to have you concerned about her however try not to worry about things that haven't happened yet. Its great that she has been diagnosed and that you both understand that her brain works differently. As long as she maintains a healthy lifestyle, as far as I know, she has the same chance of living a long happy life :).

Yes I believe I have trouble with some issues you mentioned and I am not diagnosed but know my mother was binge drinking picking up stories from my father and family. My father is educated and a QS and my mother working class functioning alcoholic who worked at pubs... My father and mother were not together for long but was raised my my mother who wasn't providing much stability and/or much routine and moved school to a boarding school which was good for me (didn't have much choice in the matter though at 10 years old) but then he had to leave since my dad couldn't pay anymore and he left the country leaving me with my mother. So much more to tell but smart enough to tell its like a big part of me is missing... My potential self. I am so bloody disorganised and lack personable social skills and it's like I am always anPTSD would like to chat more but would like a response... Don't like to ramble on too much. 39 years old with 2 non FASD kids fortunately

Mark Mark, this is cynical. If everyone took your advice these infants born to alcohol consuming pregnant women who carry them to term would be born into a completely desolate future and encounter fearful people like yourself. That isn’t fair. Society has a duty to look after and support its disadvantaged, damaged and vulnerable.
