Thanks for this how-to video. Symptoms were after pushing the rear hatch button the hatch would start to lift then stop with giving 3 quick beeps as the error sound. Repeated pressing of the rear hatch button would result the the same - the hatch would begin moving then stop, again giving 3 beeps. Scanning showed right rear strut open circuit and replacing that strut has corrected the issue.

Sounds like a faulty lift or tailgate switch. I would start by checking the vehicle for fault codes. If the system is not working properly, a fault code will be set. This will be your best bet when diagnosing.

How do you know if the struts are bad? I'm getting a lot of error beeps and hatch only moves a few inches. What senses the lift resistance?

Most times they will no longer support the tailgate / trunk when they fail. Resistance is likely monitored via current. Check for fault codes .
