    As someone who lives is Waco I audibly laughed when you said, “not a fancy town…” 😂 You should have seen Waco when I got here in 2009. Downtown was 80% boarded up and now it’s thriving. But yes, we got some work to do. 😄

    I previously posted a very similar comment which for some reason is not showing up so if it shows up later I apologize for making the same remarks twice. I was born and raised in Waco Texas which is a very lovely City with some beautiful neighborhoods, gorgeous parks and extremely friendly people. The area where Magnolia is located is an older part of Waco and had become a bit rundown which is why Chip and Joanna chose that area to revitalize and to help bring back downtown Waco. There are many lovely things to see in Waco like the Baylor University Campus, the lovely Cameron Park Zoo and Cameron Park, along with Lake Waco and the many gorgeous neighborhoods and homes that surround it. I would invite anyone planning a trip to Waco to Google the city and find all the places of interest and take time to explore. I am sorry you made the comment you made about Waco homes. My mother grew up in that area in the 1930s and 1940s when folks appreciated having a roof over their heads. It is my hope that no one living in one of those homes was watching your vlog.

    • @countrysister700
      @countrysister700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed - so much to see and appreciate but it's a bit much for the typical quick trip to town.

    • @sandrad7381

      @@countrysister700 Yes there is much to see. I was mostly prompted to comment due to the comment Sarah repeated about Waco homes. It made me sad for my hometown especially as many Wacoans can't afford the escalating home prices there.

      It made me sad too as not everyone can afford a luxury home. Many people are struggling and also many people might really love their small home in the center of town. It stung a little to hear those comments about Waco.

    As a Wacoan and former employee, I can tell you the Magnolia team takes the corporate motto of We Do Good Work That Matters to heart. We (I still claim them as my family) pray for that day's guests each morning before the doors open. Like Joanna, the team learns *every* single detail matters and there's no product ding or guest need that's too small to not at least attempt to solve. I could chat all day - but know that warm weather visitor volume is highest. If you can stand the Texas heat, mid August to mid September (minus Labor day weekend) is super for lower crowd volume when most folks are busy with back to school. Tues-Thurs are the best days to visit any time of year.
    Part of the success of Fixer Upper was that Jo and Chip's clients could buy houses for a song in our (then) soft real estate market and spend $$$ on the reno. We're a working class college town that's now attracted the world's attention - tourists, venues that want to sell to tourists, real estate investors, a Musk Space-X plant nearby, and you name it. Sadly the resulting skyrocketing home prices haven't helped our local families with affordable housing and other issues, but the new life has allowed Waco to prove streets and long needed infrastructure upgrades. The current economy may prove to be hard on tourism and the discretionary spending that is our lifeblood, but we've learned what success feels like and are proud of our city .
    I believe God ordained and guided our town's past and the mission and ministry of Magnolia and will give us all we need and more. So pleased and blessed you came to visit us!

We were lucky to stay in the LondonHouse which was the wedding venue. Everyone we met in the city was so friendly. The boat tour of the downtown architecture was breathtaking. The Field museum and the FREE Lincoln Park Zoo all family friendly.There is a Trader Joe’s downtown . Food was delicious everywhere. Flowering bulbs and trees everywhere.Lastly St Peters Church for Easter Mass was incredible. Hopefully this will inspire someone to visit Chicago in the future…

Our hotel located right in Michigan Avenue not far from American girl shop. I am Australian and seeing those numbers of homeless are very confronting and sad. • @twistoffate4791
      @twistoffate4791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Her comments were completely unnecessary. Joanna & Chip love Waco. Why bother visiting their businesses if one is going to insult the town the Gaines love? And not everyone in Waco can afford a home renovation, but are still a part of the overall community, which, at the end of the day, is to be celebrated & not criticized.

      @@twistoffate4791 I'm a Wacoan and don't take offense. Some of the arteries leading into downtown are 1940-50's blue collar homes of glass plant and similar industrial workers. They were well built but serve as homes still at a price point more affordable to for some. Face it - nobody's home town is all like Castle Heights and our other affluent neighborhoods. Another poster correctly pointed out the Market at the Silos used to be run down, filled with derelicts, an eyesore no one knew how to remedy. But God nudged a girl named Jo....

      Agreed. I know the Gaines would hate to hear it said that the town was a stark contrast to the work they have done and unkind judgments being made about their neighbors. There is so much more to Waco than what can be seen in one short trip and, while the progress seen as a result of the Gaines’ work is beneficial and impressive, some of the folks in those little neighborhoods have been priced out of affording anything else. I felt for those living on the streets shown if they happen to watch your video, which they might do since it is about their town.

One item I liked was a small 6 inch plain ordinary flower pot and it was $31 dollars so that didn't leave with us. Was a big line waiting to get in the bakery. The "Seed" store didn't have any seeds at all. There is no parking lot so you have to park wherever you can.

    The restaurant looks very typical southern California style to me. It became a staple Mediterranean style that was borrowed from China and Middle East - then used in other places I've read.

    Waco is actually a really great and beautiful place. The Silos are in an older area of Waco that do need to be renovated. The "Fixer Upper" homes that Chip & Joanna do typically end up matching the neighborhoods where they are done and do not typically "stick out". I love what they have done for the town but living here, I also don't love what they have done. Everyone is so fascinated with the show that many end up moving here. Our home appraisal values go up 25-55% each year! We don't make the money that Chip and Jo do so that type of increase really hurts. And if you live here, you don't go near the Silos.

      You are correct! Waco is a beautiful and great place in our state. However, I really believe that folks are just moving in droves to our state, not just Waco. Appraisal values for Texas homes is on the rise overall. That’s all 😊

    I live in Waco & have all my life. Ur unkind comments about Waco offend me. Magnolia has revitalized our downtown area but with great input from the city coffers. Locals know where to purchase “their products” elsewhere for reasonable prices. Waco has a lot to offer other than Magnolia. I would suggest visitors experience all Waco has to offer.

      In my much younger days my friends and I sometimes hung out at the Elite. It was historic and I wish the had preserved some of its original charm.

    • @countrysister700
      @countrysister700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you'll recall the Elite was sitting there empty after multiple restaurant owners failed to make a go of it. Even the Citranos found it with too many problems and too risky to try. It took a massive investment of money to reno and get it going. They did in fact keep as much of the original features and flavor as possible working with agencies concerned with that issue. The "old" Elite was no longer charming and Wacoans didn't do anything to save it but this family thankfully did.

    Sarah, I enjoyed your vlog about Magnolia Silos, but I think somebody in Waco got a bee in their bonnets with all their comments about your unkind remarks. I personally didn’t find them offensive, but I understand many of the locals resent the impact of the Gaines’s (change is hard). IMHO, their Uber defensive attitude doesn’t reflect much Texas hospitality. You didn’t give us many tips other than getting early dining reservations. Did you find the merch in the gift shop & home store expensive & made in China quality? Thanks.

      For the amount of vitriol that people spout these days, it is surprising to me that they are so thin-skinned when they feel that comments are directed at them in some way. I watched the video again to see if I missed something. You made observations and provided a moment in time during your visit. Any town in America is going to have modest homes to extravagant homes. It's not a put-down, it's reality. Sarah shares a wealth of knowledge and her experiences. I appreciate her video coverage of the Texas visit.

    As someone who lives in Waco, I wanna say DO NOT go to Magnolia. Instead, visit small local businesses such as Celestial Sisters, Skellington Curiosities, or Fabled Books. The farmers market is also great. These are people who actually need your money. We hate magnolia here. They don’t treat their employees with respect and they’re driving up the prices on housing. They’ve gentrified the downtown as well. Additionally it was extremely rude of you to say those things about our town. Don’t come here if you can’t respect the work we do.

      As someone who lived in a tourist town for ten years,( Vermont ski area) the small business owners relied on the tourists and the bigger things that drew them there. ( our business included). There were a lot of small woolen mills by the river and when polyester became a big hit😵‍💫 in the 1970’s, the little towns shriveled up,making Vermont one of the poorest states in the nation. So, was it annoying to try to get groceries on the weekend when the population went from 2000 to 20,000? Absolutely, but the skiers were “our bread and butter” and we were grateful. ( and we learned to get groceries on Wednesday and enjoy our weekends at home)

      Agreed. I learned a good lesson as a child. We were on vacation & dove through a small town, much like the ones my parents grew up in. I commented on a shabby house & said I was glad to live in our house. My dad told me that that house may be all that family could afford, and that they were rightfully relieved & proud to have a roof over their heads. I suddenly understood. His point was crystal clear.

      Hi Peggy, I'm sorry that was how my statements came across, it certainly wasn't my intention! As this was a vlog style video, I mentioned it more to show the contrast between the Silos and the surrounding neighborhoods (which look much like my own town in WA), and not as a judgement against the houses themselves, and certainly not the people living in them.
