Appears to be a reproduction. I have one. The boss and opening on the latch require a bit of gentle dressing with a file. Just remove the "flashings" and rough edges. Also some white lithium grease on both side of the latch. I shoot with the North-South Skirmish Association. I find the Eras Gone by pure lead bullet sized .518 and 35 grains of 3f to be the most accurate. For skirmishing will need a taller front sight. Most of our targets are at 50 yards.
First Alabama Calvary, USA was armed with Smith Carbines. The unit of a bit under 3000 was made up of pro Union men from North Alabama and served as Sherman's Escort, bodyguard, and scouts on his march to the sea.
Cool show. These cavalry carbines looks extremely handy for a horseman!

Years ago I bought a Smith Carbine for $300.00 It needed a screw to hold the hammer in place. I easily found one the Shotgun News.
That is awesome! They are a neat carbine for sure. Now it can be difficult to find parts!

I’m looking for a smith. I think it would make a nice close range deer rifle
Rather under powered.
