  • The Grand March starts the Saturday night dance at the annual Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend, held in mid-January each year at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH. This footage was taken on January 15, 2011.
Named in honor of the great New England caller of contra and square dances, the RPDLW celebrates the traditions of New England style dancing, including dances and music that are centuries old and those that have been composed more recently.
This year's Grand March was led by Beth and Tony Parkes, with music provided by Bob McQuillen, piano; Randy Miller, fiddle; and Peter Siegel, mandolin. The tunes in the medley are All the Way to Galway, Mari's Wedding, Jenny's Gone to Linton, and Liberty (also known as the Reel de Ti-Jean)

What a trip down memory lane! I did this a lot as a child in Texas at weddings!

Glad you enjoyed it. The number of dancers at this event means that the leaders need to do something different to make it possible for everyone to get into the hall. The more common "up the center and separate, men go left and women right" would mean that folks would still be coming into the hall as others were trying to go around them. That spiral is also, as you know, a great way to say hello to other dancers. Come join us at next year's event.

Sure sounded like Bob McQuillen gave the BEGIN order. Knew Bob from long ago, both of us living in the local area. What a nice guy and a real character!!! NH

Fascinating. As a caller, I used to love doing a Grand March as some of my one nighters when there was a lot of people and enough room in the dance hall. Haven't done one in a long time. Loved the spiral at the beginning, like watching a live kaleidoscope. There were some variations there that I've never seen before. Well done!
