Why our Children Need Role Models that Look Like Them | Patty Rodriguez | TEDxCalStateLA

  • Research has found that 70 percent of all people feel like impostors at one time or another, especially people of color. This syndrome is mostly prevalent in communities of color -- starting with our children. If they don't see themselves being represented how can they feel they belong? A few years ago, upon understanding my feelings and fears of self-doubt, I decided to push away those fears and start a business to contribute to representation of people of color in children's books!
Patty Rodriguez is a nationally recognized multi-faceted individual. An entrepreneur, senior producer, co-founder and author of the bilingual children's book publisher Lil Libros, and founder of MALA by Patty Rodriguez, jewelry line. Born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents and raised in Lynwood, CA - she’s become a role model in the Latino community and given a voice of hope to the youth. Patty and her work have been featured in LA Times, Buzzfeed, Univision, Rolling Stone, CNN Latino, Latina Magazine, Cosmopolitan, People En Español, Cosmo Latina, and American Latino TV to name a few.

How about you start being role models for your own children instead of relying on other people?

mujer you made me cry!! as I'm telling my 6 year old boy growing up in a super competitive school district, mainly Asian and white. where we are the minority. that he can grow up to be anything he has ever imagined. I too have experience this, oh spanish book at the back. asking for spanish reading time, and them being like oh no one comes. gracias

Oh man once she mentioned the sweet valley high series I lost it. What Patty described in this talk was how I've felt growing up and reading books my whole life. Whenever I found myself in a book it was because it was someone who was ashamed of who they were. I wasn't ashamed of myself but it did make me work harder to speak with no accent. I've assimilated myself into being that complacent Mexican-American who didn't complain about representation in media until now. I'm so happy to see the rise in diversity in books, movies, and artists that I'm no longer ashamed when my true original vernacular comes out full blown.
