    5:45 I came for the review, back in 2019, and I haven't left this page, or my computer, since. How can I? The mystery of that moment at 5:45 - "Trash Can Sneak Attack" - consumes my life. What does it mean? Why does he need an alarm for it? Is it the trash can that's making a sneak attack, or a person attacking a trash can? Is the trash can... a metaphor?
    Nobody else mentioned it in the comments--how is that possible? Are they in on it, too?
    Is the trash can... all of us? Humanity?

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      LMAO.
      This is the best comment I've ever received in the 3 year history of my channel. Lol
      Some weeks I have so little trash, (only one bag) rather than wheel out my large trash can toter I just sneak across the street, and toss it in my neighbors can once he sets his out on the street.
      Conversely, some weeks I have so much trash it won't fit in my single trash can toter, and I’ll fill up my neighbors once he places his out on the street.
      I set the alarm for 1AM when he’s asleep so he, or my other neighbors are less likely to see me.
      That's the “Trash Can Sneak Attack”.

    as a photo and video professional, I actually find it refreshing, that you show your notes and camera monitor, I love it when you can see the content and how it's made in the same frame simultaneously, good work and nice attention to detail. as far as informative video content is concerned I thing you're doing a fine job.

    • @gibbsm

      btw, I'm a R50 Nissan Pathfinder lover, and have never owned a vicky or marquis, but found it searching for the head unit.

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching, and taking the time to leave a comment.
      If I didn’t use the notes, I would ramble on way longer, and without my “cell phone monitor” I wouldn’t know what I was filming, (I stuck my Sony Action Cam on the frame of my glasses).
      I don’t have a computer, or access to editing software. 99% percent of all my videos are one take, one cut. If I do need to film a video with two, or more clips, I have to put them together on my iPhone 5S using the Sony Action Cam App, (I only have a Chromebook, and it can’t download editing software).
      I’m about as low tech, and low budget as it gets. But, thank you for the kind words.
      As far as the head unit, it’s a very basic unit. If you only need something to connect an iPhone to, it will be sufficient. It’s over a year old now, and I think a newer, and improved model is coming out soon, so I would wait to see what that offers.

      Yo JM,
      Your the only person so far in the history of this video that understood what I was trying to say. Lol
      This head unit only has one subwoofer preamp output, when every other head unit has dual.
      This means this head unit works best with single channel mono block amps.
      You can hook up a stereo 2 channel amp but your only going to get half the amp's total power output because it's only getting half the signal from the head unit.

      Panzer Platform Wouldn’t it be possible to add a y-splitter at the end of the RCA cable for the radio to get the full effect? I’m thinking of either buying this one, or the Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB, and the Dual RCA is a must, But it looks like this Sony has a much better screen, and of course a nice volume button.

    That Mercury Grand Marquis is built like a ole Kenmore washing machine. That’s a nice receiver although the best sounding radio I’ve ever heard was when I put a Alpine in my 1998 Lincoln Town Car. The sound was so dynamic. Instead of hearing the music it felt as if you were in the music. This was with factory speakers as well. I had the same experience recently with another car I just bought. I tested this stereo and a old Alpine. This sounded good, the Alpine sounded amazing!

    I have that installed on my 1998 Crown vic. It was no easy task. First I had to swap my existing center defrost duct from a 2006 CVPI. Took me over 8 hours to do, had to take the dashboard down. Then add a reverse camera, which I had to tear into the interior trim of the car to do so and then install that particular radio. Only drawback is that it dont have a CD player 😢 boy i sure would love to listen to some old CDs i enjoyed back in the day in my car.

    Very nice review. I just purchased this from Crutchfield and am very excited to install it. The issue with only one sub output is a little concerning but I'm glad you were able to get your amp working nicely with the splitter. One of the main reasons I bought this unit is because of the volume knob. In my research, this was the best available unit with a volume knob and Sony's new model is $100 more expensive but does not have the volume knob

      @@PanzerPlatform Chuck, I ended up installing my amp and sub. I only plugged one of the RCA's into the back of the head unit but you said in your video that if I use an RCA splitter I will get better sound quality?

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yo Robert,
      No, not exactly.
      But that's my fault for not explaining it properly in the video.
      Because I don't know what type of amplifier you have, or how the pre-amp inputs work.
      This is going to be a game of trial & error.
      1.) Get an RCA splitter (male to two female) and plug in into the subwoofer output on the back of the head unit.
      Then make your connections as you normally would.
      Set the crossover frequencies in the amp, set the input sensitivity (gain) and listen to a test song.
      2.) Next remove the splitter from the subwoofer output on the head unit, and connect both rca's coming from the amp into the Left, and Right (white, red) pre-amp outputs on the back of the head unit, (front or rear should not matter, but I would choose rear).
      Again, re-tune by setting the crossover frequencies in the amp, set the input sensitivity (gain) and listen to the same test song.
      3.) Theoretically this second method should increase the overall loudness of the subwoofer output by double.
      However, by connecting the pre-amp inputs on the amplifier to the head unit this way, you will have lost some functions of the built-in sound processing modes, and features designed to work with a subwoofer.
      So you'll need to decide if you want your subwoofer to play as loud as possible, or half as loud with better sound quality. This is why I don't like this head unit only having ONE subwoofer pre-amp output.

    Hi. Can you tell me if the volume knob is resistive like a factory knob. Dont know if thats a word actually. Does it spin too easy. I am just weird about this. I drive a lifted up rough riding truck and to be honest the knobs in a OEM radio have a certain feel or resistance that aftermarket usually do not have.

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the comment.
      That's a really good question.
      Yes, the volume knob has a good resistance to it.
      It also clicks every time the volume increases, or decreases by one.
      I'd say about 90% of the time I adjust the volume with the included remote control.
      It's about the size of a credit card.
      I didn't include it in the review because wireless remote controls are so 90's, and gimmicky to me.
      I guess I should mention the unit is capable of being controlled by steering wheel controls on newer cars.

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At first it will probably sound better, but over time the speakers may get damaged from being under powered by the stock deck.
      Interestingly enough, I'm still running the factory speakers in my 2010 Grand Marquis, and they are still not blown.
      In fact they sound pretty darn good.
      I have a feeling this is because this Sony Head Unit has a somewhat "powerful" built in amplifier.
      CEA Rated @ 20Watts RMS (55Watts Peak) x 4.
      But more importantly it has a built in crossover, and I have have it adjusted so no low frequencies, or bass gets to the speakers. This means they will probably never get blown.
      So based on that, I would replace the head unit first, and wait to replace the speakers until they blow out, or just don't sound that good.

      Right on Luke,
      Thanks for watching, and the good question.
      First;
      Sony just released an updated version of this unit it has both CarPlay, and Android Auto capability so I do not recommend this old unit.
      It's called the XAV-AV150.
      They made the screen bigger, but in order to do do so they had to drop the volume knob, and front panel USB input.
      I think those are acceptable because it comes with a wireless remote, and some cars have steering wheel controls for volume.
      Now for your answer;
      In order to do anything CarPlay related you must connect your iPhone directly with a usb cable, or a wireless adapter, (but those adapters can cost as much as the unit $300).

      Yo Sergio,

      The answer all comes down to your amplifier.
      I'm not going to be able to give you an easy, clear cut answer which is exactly what you want. lol
      You're going to need to experiment a little and try each configuration to see which wiring configuration sounds best.
      Each time you change the wiring configuration, you'll need to adjust the input sensitivity of the amplifier to get the most amount of power out of it, without causing distortion, and damaging your subwoofers.

      I think you missed the point. Please forgive me if I'm wrong.
      What ever subwoofers you choose, and how you connect them to the amplifier is inconsequential.
      The issue with this head unit, is it only has one subwoofer preamp output.
      Most all other head units have dual subwoofer preamp outputs.
      The problem with the single preamp output is it may reduce the overall output of the amplifier by half, depending on how the amplifier is internaly constructed.
      This means if your amplifier is rated for 1000 Watts. It may only be putting out 500 Watts because of the single preamp subwoofer output on the head unit.

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on Austin,
      Thanks for watching, and I apologize for my terrible explanation.
      It basically all comes down to the configuration of your subwoofer amplifier.
      It it requires DUAL pre-amp outputs, this unit only has a single pre-amp subwoofer output.
      That means the signal strength will be cut in half, which means your amplifier will only be operating at half capacity, half power, half volume etc.
      I have found using a subwoofer amp that is a class D, mono block, single channel amp this is not an issue. However, if the amp is a 2-channel it will only run at half power, even if you can bridge the amp to one channel.
      Let me know if I confused you even more. lol

      The short answer is yes.
      The long answer is, it depends on the subwoofer specification, and configuration, and if the amplifier is safe to run at 2 Ohms.
      1.) Are the subs Single or Dual Voice Coil.
      2.) Are the subs 2 Ohm, 4 Ohm, 8 ohm etc.
      3.) Are you going to wire them in series, or parallel?

      You just need the correct connector for your phone.

    How do you run the rca’s to the amplifier if it just has 1 sub out on the head unit ?

      Hey Bryan,
      Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment.
      That's a very good question. If it ever got back to Sony, I hope they fix this problem.
      The short answer is;
      It depends on the subwoofer amp you're going to run.
      If the subwoofer amp is a one channel mono block amp it should be fine.
      However, if the subwoofer amp is two channel, if will only be getting half the signal, and will only produce half of the amp overall output.
      So basically you have to run a one channel mono block amp with this head unit if you want to run a subwoofer.
      I hope that answers your question.

      Thank you sir I appreciate it. I bought this head unit used so I wanted to see if I would run into any problems with that.
      So my other question is that I have rca’s with 2 male ends on each side. Would I have to by a Y adapter with 1 male and 2 female ends to hook up to the head unit ? Thank you for your time any replying to me!

      If you're making the connections yourself, I suggest you do what I did, and try both ways, and seeing which way sounds best.
      Use just the single subwoofer preamp output to the amp, tube the input sensitivity (gain) on the amp.
      Then connect a Y splitter to the subwoofer preamp output on the head unit, and run both RCA's to you amp, and re tune the input sensitivity (gain), to see which ways sounds best.
      I know it's a pain in the rear, but you only have to do it once.

      Thanks for the question.
      Basically, it all depends on the type of amplifier you will use. If you choose a MonoBlock one channel Amp you should be ok.
      If you choose a 2-Channel amp, this head unit will only let the 2-channel amp run with half the Subwoofer signal, and in turn the amp will only produce half of its overall output.
      If sound quality, Bass, and subwoofer flexibility is your number one concern, I do not recommend this head unit, for the simple fact it only has one Subwoofer output.
      I recommend you find a head unit with two Subwoofer outputs.
      You may want to call Crutchfield at 1-844-202-2007 to help you pick out a head unit. They'll help you even if you don't buy something from them.
      Hope that answers your question. Any other questions let me know.

    I appreciate your review.. considering getting one these.. i do currently have a subwoofer with amp. (i believe it is a 2 channel amp) it is set up in the trunk of my 08 charger and i currently have the stock radio. if i upgrade to this Sony unit.. what did you say we need to do for the subwoofer and amp ? right now , i think the subwoofer and amp are connected in to the rear deck speaker line with some type of adapter thing?

    • @PanzerPlatform
      @PanzerPlatform  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Frank,
      Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment.
      Sorry my long winded explanation is confusing, and not clear.
      Long story shorter;
      This head unit has 3 sets of pre-amp outputs;
      A pair for Front L + R
      A pair for Rear L + R
      And a “single” output for the subwoofer
      Based on my frustrating trial, and error experimenting with two different head units, and two different amplifiers, I learned this head unit will only work “properly” with a subwoofer amplifier that is a monoblock one channel amp, (not a two channel amplifier bridged into one channel).
      Why?
      If you connect the one given pre-amp output to a two channel subwoofer amplifier, the amplifier will only be able to amplify half of its power output. If you connect a Y-Spliter to the back of the head unit to the one given subwoofer output, the net result will be the same, because the signal strength to the subwoofer amplifier will be cut in half, even though you connected both pre-amp outputs. Garbage in, garbage out I believe is the saying.
      So, I only recommend you buy this head unit, if you plan to use it with a monoblock one channel subwoofer amp. Technically, you could feed a two channel subwoofer amplifier with the Front, or Rear pre-amp outputs, but that will introduce two issues. 1.) You will be providing full range signal (low, mid range, and high frequencies) to the subwoofer amplifier, this is counter productive because you only want the subwoofer amplifier to have to deal with amplifying low frequencies, even though most subwoofer amps have built in crossovers. 2.) You will lose control over some of the equalizer functions in the head unit. You will also loose individual control over the subwoofer using the subwoofer controls in the head unit.

      Hey Transformation,
      Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment.
      The Sony is currently $250, and the Kenwood is currently $800, at Crutchfield.com
      I don't think I could compare those two.
      Also, I would need more info to make a recommendation.
      What kind of car will this be going in?
      Are you going to be running an amplifier for your in dash, and door speakers?
      Subwoofer, and amp,
      Back up camera?
      What kind of cell phone do you use, Apple, or Android, or both?
      Sorry I'm no help.
      If I can offer any tips, I'd suggest doing as much homework on your total system before spending any money.
      And, also buying from a reputable retail, that has a solid return policy,in case a component does not work out for your application.

      I looked at those Alpine S-S65's.
      Those look like good speakers, but the specs look like they're going to require an external amplifier to run them properly.
      Based on my experience, speakers with those kind of specs running off an internal amp in a head unit will be damaged from low power distortion.
      Since you use an Android phone, the Sony is out, it only does Carplay for iPhone's.

    Hey, thank you for this review! I might have missed this part (if you did mention it in the video), but does this head device work with the wheel remote control system?? I have a 2008 Honda CRV with an old original stereo, so I was planning to upgrade it with this this Sony model, but not being able to switch tracks and control the volume with the buttons on the wheel is a huge dealbreaker for me. I know some devices can be programmed to work with the wheel remote control, so what's the deal with this specific one? Is it possible at all? Thanks in advance!
