(Inintial TL: “I don’t know anything!”) It seems many people misinterpret the phrase here as Mafumom lying that she had no idea about why Mafuyu ran away, so I’m here to reconfirm it. Of course Mafumom is aware of her wrongdoings (she didn’t consider them to be wrong btw) and knows it’s the reason why Mafuyu ran away. So actually, the phrase here, considering the context and her tone, indicates her confusion: she’s clueless and doesn’t know what to do anymore, nor she know why her behaviors did such damage to Mafuyu and caused her to leave the house.

You'd be surprised at how dense adults can be until it's too late. Convincing themselves that they're right, and that it's the kids problem or the fault of the crowd they hang out with. It really does take something drastic like running away from home, or worse, to get them to actually listen.
Tbh, the Mafuyu storyline hits pretty close to home for me. xD

i feel like mafumom is reinforcing the belief theres generational abuse at play here and no i do not like her at all but i think her hysteria raises some significant pointers about her actual personality
edit: glad most people agree but i really want people to stop getting angry at 2:38 because they interpret mafumom saying “I don’t know anything” as her commenting on not knowing why mafuyu chose to leave or that she’s been hurting mafuyu (OFC she’s aware, mafuyu has literally left for this reason, she just doesn’t understand how mafuyu can have these conclusions), so actually, as soon as I heard that I thought it was immediately her confessing her very distressed confusion over her still not understanding how to “fix” any of what’s happened as a parent, that she still doesn’t know why her tactics aren’t working. Mafumom is a manipulative woman and she doesn’t try to consider mafuyu’s side but if we try to think about why this keeps happening, it may be related to her own upbringing and thus the thought of the methods used in her childhood (in other words likely a form of psychological abuse) not working when they’re applied to mafuyu, clearly scares her into the position she’s in now. Perhaps a part of her is also scared of considering whether she really was treated unfairly in her childhood if mafuyu is so outwardly against her opinions and tactics. She’s so fixated on everything mafuyu does to "bring good to her" believing its the only right way to help and protect her future, to the point it seems so blatantly implied she understands no other way to raise a child, or at least how to support their desires for the future.
Listen to her outburst carefully. She is distraught over mafuyu not understanding how she insists to “help” her (the help in this case being not help at all but she thinks it is the best and only way), and now her daughter has run away and refuses to step foot in her own home so of course, while mafumom has deeply believed her methods are correct and support mafuyu, she has now lost said daughter and displays the distress and terror any parent would have. Why is this not going the way she intended for mafuyu? Why is mafuyu not accepting she’s “right”? Why doesn’t mafuyu realise this is the “only way” she can succeed? Why doesn’t mafuyu realise she wants the best for her future, and yet refuses to accept her guidance? If it worked on herself, why isn’t it working on mafuyu? These are the actual thoughts mafumom has. She’s god hopeless and deluded but I think there is a genuine care to raise her daughter inside of her, she is just yet to comprehend that what she’s doing is damaging, and the idea of hearing mafuyu out in turn terrifies her because it would 1) “endanger mafuyu’s future” and 2) make her question if she missed out on opportunities in her own life from being treated in a similar way.
Yes! I feel like mafumom has been subjected to this kind of abuse before and applied it to Mafuyu thinking that she's doing good. Doesn't excuse her actions tho but i like that she got more characterization than just "abusive mom"
@@tawagotospeakerRight! I'm glad her character is getting expanded more. It was kind of jarring to just see constant mischaracterization of her character. The way she just got summed up to a "demon mom" and the way people always wanted her to die was uhh😭
Of course, her actions can't be excused and she's definitely far from an amazing mother to Mafuyu, but I love the way she's written. It all feels so real and just grounded. You can tell that a character like her is written well when tons of people want her to die so bad lmfaooo!

Yeah, like Mafumom's either doing as her parents did to her or she's become controlling and enmeshed in her daughter's life to make up for what her parents may have taken away via generational trauma. The whole thing's still awful and terrifying, but unfortunately nasty people aren't (usually) born that way.

This is genuinely good writing of parents being distraught/worried for their child's well being.
Mafuyu's parents arguing/having a discussion regarding what happened is something I expected to happen realistically but it still hurts ro see it from experience.
Yes Mafumom is an ABSOLUTELY AWFUL Mother but imagine your child who you cherished and loved running away from you and now refusing to return home after weeks of maybe months and you wish to know and find the solution but sadly it isn't easy. to an actually caring mother, it's a devastating nightmare.
Again no sympathy for Mafumom but the scenario is SPOT ON

I love that Mafumama isn't cartoonishly evil. Like most emotionally abusive parents it stems from something akin to actual love for her daughter, even if it's an idealized version of her. She's awful, but I love that they didn't make her unrealistic, because at the end of the day, it's still the child she raised that ran away.

I feel for Mafumom becuase you and @rando7877 are right in that she is still a mother whose child has run away from home and refuses to return, despite her only trying to help (at least, from her perspective). Truthfully, I sympathized Mafumom right until she said "how can I get her to understand" becuase it shows that she's still unwilling to admit that the problem might be her, but places the blame on Mafuyu and others.

i really like that they're exploring mafumom's character more deeply. yes she's an awful mother but i don't think she's guilt tripping mafudad's here. i think she's genuinely emotionally destroyed by mafuyu leaving. i hope they explore her backstory and what caused her to treat her daughter so bad.

My theory is, Mafumom also went through the same trauma as Mafuyu but never had anyone to help her which is why she treated Mafuyu like how she treated her. She probably only treated Mafuyu like that because that's all she knew her life. Like that scene where she lashes out?? I don't think she's faking.

There's this post on reddit that's always shared that's called "missing missing reasons". It's when they parents go "idk what I did wrong for my child to cut me off", when in fact they do know, they have been told by the child time and time again, but they don't understand/aknowledge it as a "good" reason to be cut off. That's what I think Mafuyu's Mom is going through here lol

I often watch videos of project sekai stories with no translation to read Japanese comments. In the English Community, people refer Mrs. Asahina as the witch whereas Japanese people refer her as '毒ワカメ', if translated literally, it means 'toxic seaweed'. I know it's not related to the story but it's interesting how people from different countries use different phrases to describe things.
Mafumom is like so manipulative...
At the start of the chapter, the father is trying to have a conversation with his fucking wife, yet she gives him the silent treatment until he finally tells mafumom what she wanted to hear, and that's when she speaks.
My burning desire to pull mafumom's hairs from her scalp one by one is so strong it might turn into a fleeting concept
I don't play this game anymore, so I may miss the mark entirely with my interpretation of this scene. Mafumom's outburst and reaction to the news felt like a parallel to Mafuyu herself. The lack of communication or emotion when she was trying to process the situation is similar to Mafuyu's. It's as if Mafumom's behaviour and unshakable personality are a way to show us that Mafuyu would end up the same exact way if it weren't for her friends telling her to wake up and not accepting this treatment as usual. Mafumom probably did not have that opportunity and felt like the teachings of her parents were absolute and unquestionable.
She reminds me of those who preach "my parents 'disciplined' me and I turned out fine" to end up continuing the cycle of abuse because they were only exposed to this type of 'care' from their parents and believe that raising your child to be their own person is a foreign concept.
Mafumom breaks down and asks what she should do. Mafuyu's disappearance challenges the principles she's followed for decades, and now she finally has to go through the experience of thinking through the perception of Mafuyu, despite it being flawed and warped. She's confused; the teaching she has always followed has turned out to be a catastrophe, and Mafuyu is not around to blame her or find a scapegoat. I wonder if Mafumom dared to challenge her parents in this manner, which is why she was clueless. It had to take Mafuyu to do something extreme (in her case) for Mafumom to wake up and question Mafuyu AND herself.
It was typical for her to blame Mafuyu as a way to console herself, as it would be strange for her to turn around and understand that Mafuyu felt pressured and unhappy. Instead, she knew she left because of her but viewed it from a "this child isn't able to handle my tough love; I just want the best for her" perspective. It will take more than this to get someone like Mafumom to change, but it's a step into the right direction.
Mafumom is a terrible parent who genuinely cares for her child. She grew up in a household where care was shown through dominance and the bare minimum. Being abusive and caring about your daughter is not mutually exclusive. It's not as if she didn't care; she just sucks at expressing it. Looking at her behaviour now, I'm confident that she was only exposed to a toxic way of care and believe that a roof in your house and a fast pass to a god career is sufficient enough. No wonder why she thought that Mafu's friends grew 7 heads when they were saying that she's a flop parent.
Mafuyu's dad isn't abusive, despite being very open and caring towards Mafuyu, his absence is still part of the problem even if it was out of his control. Accepting that he was so busy, and overlooked everything just continues the cycle. Just imagine what would happen if he never found out? He's a father at the end of the day and is responsible for his child alongside Mafumom. Life is busy. However, there are single parents who do both roles.
Mafumom, to me, is an amazingly written character, and by watching the first few seconds, you can just see the resemblance of the two. She's a rotten mother and an image of what Mafuyu would have become if she never cried for help. This family trope is so toxic and unfortunately common in many cultures, where children resist their parent's abuse and give up later when no one is there to tell them to fight on. Mafumom is dislikable, significantly if you were raised in the same way as Mafuyu. Some feel conflicted about whether to give her redemption as a way to give Mafuyu her closure but also to project their own lives and see what it would be like if their parents changed their ways, however others would want Mafumom to be condemned without redemption since the damage has been done and removing her out of the picture will give everyone a happy ending.
It's time for Mafumom to change, if she just continues to blame her daughter and release crocodile tears, then she should gtfo honestly. I don't have much to say about Mafudad other than that it was amazing that he made Mafuyu realise that there's someone in her family that respects her wishes, however niigo was the catalyst for this change and Mafudad (due to him being busy) and unintentionally ended up playing the role of damage control.

I think Mafuyu should living independent after she graduates. Because she doesn't need her mother's guidance because she is horrible person. A lot of fans really hate her so much that resulting Mafuyu completely breakdown. If there a TEKKEN character in Colorful Stage, it should be Jin & Xiaoyu because they able helping Mafuyu.

@@くらげ-n6m2g なるほど確かにそれだと理解以前にかなり印象が悪く見えますね。シンセを捨てられたりパソコンを覗かれて捨てられたり(データが無事な状態で父親が見つけているので後で返す可能性があった？)プライベートの締め付けがキツくなったら多少サボることも無理はないけれどそれに思い至る間もなく「良い子だったのに何で！？どうして今更看護師になりたいって言うの！？医者になる事が一番まふゆの為になるのに！」という気持ちが強かったのかもしれません
願望を押し付けているというよりこれが最善なんだこれが正しいのだという母親なりの善意なのがしんどいです
父親も一見理解があって優しいですが殆ど家に居なかったから拗れるまで家庭不和に気付かなかったというのも罪が重いですしお金だけでは子どもは育たないし一人で育児を頑張っている母親の方もしんどかったかもしれないとなったら誰が一番悪いとか決められないと思ってきています(長文すみません)

It’s behaviour that’s common with abusers that had their victim cut off ties with them. She doesn’t even seem to be trying to change rn.

I'm currently reading a book about abusers and abuse tactics, and Mafumom is such a textbook example of an abusive and manipulative person. The tactic she pulls here is a classic; when someone tries to confront her about her past abusive actions, she directs the conversation to her own current feelings. I'm not saying her feelings here aren't genuine, they most likely are, but she is deliberately moving the focus away from Mafuyu's pain and what caused that pain, and to her own current pain in order to regain control over the conversation.

We can see the difference here. Mafudad want to understand Mafuyu and is searching for a way to heal her. Mafumom is worried that Mafuyu is not able to understand her vision. So she is not even trying to change. Mafudad have just told her that the lost of taste is because of stress and is not even wondering if she has been pressuring her to much. She just making herself the victim when is Mafuyu the one whose life is in danger. It's going to be really difficult for Mafudad to get to the bottom of things because this wasn't a consequence of the fight. Is the accumulation of many years which is not easy to explain.
Her mom is not worried about how does Mafuyu feel and does not even miss her for mafumom want her to come back because of being her daughter and loving her, she's just outraged because she was not able to accomplish her goal and, as a theory, not being able to do to her what mafumom's mom did in the past too.
And Mafuyu's life is canonically in danger, humans can die of depression and inanition, the loss of taste symptom is a huge alert in these cases, meaning that this person needs treatment as an emergency to avoid huge and bigger complications that would lead to this person's death
@@Yan_8 exactly, she doesn't care, sometimes I try to no be so hard on her but then she keep doing this things and I keep remembering how Kanade told her how serious this was and she ignored it. Even now Mafudad telling her about her lost of taste should have been a wake up call for her to change or at least tell Mafudad what Kanade said.

Seems that mafumom is still dense and refuses to accept or just can’t seem to realize how wrong her actions were. She is convinced that her manipulation and control over mafuyu was correct parenting, maybe her parents were like that as well so she might genuinely believe thats how you’re supposed to lead your child to a successful path in life, of course that wouldn’t change how atrocious her actions were. That’s why she’s so distraught and upset over mafuyu running away and her long term absence

mafumom's characterization is really good, ive said it before but i'd bet someone on the writers team has intimate experience with this sort of person. Also, her model/voice direction is mad uncanny; she doesn't move quite right, or even at all, nor does she even make a noise when the ellipses comes up, when any other character would. she feels like a cardboard cutout of a person. it just makes your skin crawl
mafumom reminds me a lot of my own mother (though mafumom is definitely worse). this mirrors pretty closely the reaction to when adult me and her started fighting over her treatment of me, which is why I believe mafumom is genuine here, though that might just be bias on my end. she is at once between desperation, confusion and self-absorbed stubbornness-- erratic, aggressive, defensive, and most of all clearly suffering, despite being the clear cause of everything from the outside. she claims outwardly that she is justified, but seemingly as a way of coping, since it doesn't match her actions, which read a lot like self-blame.
abusive people aren't abusive because everything is going great for them mental-health wise. they are often destroying other people due to their own insecurity, in an attempt to self-regulate. they believe wouldn't feel safe or comfortable otherwise. many abusers believe they love their victims, in their own messed up way, and will react accordingly when they are 'taken' from them. though we don't see much of it, mafumom is probably as harsh on herself as she is to mafuyu, and as void of dreams and happiness as she tried to make her. She takes basic things like safety and freedom from mafuyu as punishment for her rebellion, and she takes basic necessities like light and food from herself as punishment for her failure to 'keep' mafuyu. it's an ouroboros.
this is not a defense of her nor a call to forgive an abuser, but an attempt to demonstrate how misery begets misery.
