The Mercedes-Benz SL (R107) is Utterly Timeless

  • While other manufacturers panicked or faltered in the 1970s, Mercedes-Benz could simply take everything the world could throw at it in its stride, creating one of the classiest and most timeless sporting grand tourers the world would ever see - the C107 and R107 SL.

Morning folks, hope you all enjoyed the video!
I just wanted to apologise for the background noise and general crackliness of the A-roll shots in this one. You’ll also notice there’s a lot of voiceover in the second half of the video. That’s because many A-roll shots wound up being unusable due to the audio. I’m using some new and rather expensive wireless transmitters to stream the audio directly to my camera, and clearly they’re sub-par.

My father bought a 1978 Mercedes 350SL in 1985 that was still like new, and even today, it’s still incredibly solid and reliable. Of course it has been well maintained, but you’d never know it’s a 45 year old car if you drove it. Even the doors close with a solid “thunk” and nothing in the car rattles or is coming apart.

In Florida, in the 80s, you were a boss if you had a 450SL. Such an elegant car. I went to a school that had kids with wealthy parents. Dino Ferraris, Citroën SMs, BMW 5 series, Corvettes, and Jaguar E-types were in the parking lot. Each car had a personality vibe, but the kids with the SLs were really respected back then.
I had an MGB, 16th birthday present, so I was the weird kid.
I really thought the 450 was beautiful, and so did every TV show you saw at that time. Great synopsis and video, as always! I'm loving your channel.
    Classic!

Time to feature the Mercedes 190 2.6 Sportline! All the design features of the SL, plus two remarkable features: a straight 6 shoehorned into a car never intended to have a straight 6. The re-engineering was done by Porsche under contract. And second, the. first outing of Mercedes 5 link rear suspension, an engineering revolution that endured for years. I had one and still regret selling it.

I remember having quite a crush on Mercedes car range in the 1970s as a teenager, and by no means considered them ugly, old fashioned or conservative, but their cars after this series and the W123 series appealed to me less and less as time went on , I’m lead to believe their quality status too has slipped further down as time went on.

I love Sunday mornings. I get to watch you waxing lyrical about all things old and automotive. And what a car to wax about. The SL/SLC is a true all time great. It's also one of the first cars I got to work on in '76 when I started work straight from school in the local Merc/Porsche/Ferrari dealer. Yeah, I know, the dream job for a 16 year old car nut! I loved the SL then and still do. If I had a choice (and some lottery winnings) I would have a 450SLC myself. What a car. Thanks Ed, loved this video.

Good review and well researched. The R107 is a landmark car. While other manufacturers developed faux convertibles with all sorts of overhead ironmongery (Stag, first XJS Cabriolets and, much more successfully, Porsche Targa), Mercedes alone developed a full convertible. Some complain about short rear travel of the seats, but that was intended so as to keep the heads of driver and passenger close to the roll-over bar built into windscreen surround. The quality of construction and materials is beyond comparison. The ride is exceptionally comfortable and better than many modern cars and fitted with one of the several V8's offered of the years, progress is relaxed and effortless. I have a 1981 380 SL and enjoy driving it regularly. It still feels modern.

Wonderful review, Ed. These were very popular with Dallas A-listers back in the day. I had several friends who owned them, and they were invariably parked prominently by valet attendants in front of tony restaurants, which is always an ego stroke. You were spot on in your assessment of their quality. Everything you touched, saw, and heard from this car imparted an impression of solid engineering excellence paired with subtle, timeless style. Alas, I never had one of my own.

Quite simply one of the most beautiful cars Mercedes produced in the last 50 years. I love it's understated elegance. The newer SLs are faster and a lot more sophisticated but they're garish to look at. This car still looked good among it's more modern peers when it went out of production in 1989. Similar to the XJS in that it stayed in production for a very long time and still held its own amid more modern rivals.

Well done, Ed. A beautiful car indeed from the time when Mercedes built to a quality standard and priced the car accordingly. Enter Lexus and Infinity, and suddenly the Japanese imports undercut Mercedes in price by a wide margin. Unfortunately the also undercut Mercedes on quality engineering but good marketing overshadowed that. As a result, Mercedes was forced to build to price as models came due for replacement. Now, of course, there is not a single new Mercedes that looks or feels distinctive. Then again, the last time i was in a Mercedes was when Ma was thinking of replacing the old Volvo 240 Estate. I knew i would be inheriting the new car, and since i could not sit upright in either of the estate models, they were off the list post haste. Funny, I'm still driving the Volvo.

Having grown up with 1970's MB vehicles, there was an undefinable 'quality' about them. A simple hand wash could tell you that. Ours were mainly deisel sedans, but still. there was a feeling of competence, and even safety behind the wheel. That said, I'm in love with the BMW 6 series coupes, and paticularly those with the later version of the 3.2/3.5 (more torque) and I'd take one of those over an R107 just to see it in the driveway. Great video. Mercedes of this era were fabulous cars, the R107 was at the time the only convertible that looked as good with the hood up. I have never been in the market for SL myself, I did test drive an SLC 450 once and It just didn't work for me. I have to say that I love the m110 280 engines, I had one in a W123 280e and it was just a great and super refined engine, and my own opinion of the 350 and 450 engines is that they are just not as refined as that sweet 280. This opinion is based on limited experience of the 350 & 450 and maybe the ones I have been in were not in the best state of tune, but if I was in the market for a SL I'd go for the 280.
