    The 1930 and 2022 are both great films, in their own ways.
    I'm glad you mentioned Volker Betelmann's score - it really fits the film and the use of silence is also right on the money, imo.
    I read the book a very long time ago and I'm going to read it again. Btw, thank you for not mangling the German language - though I see you live in Vienna, but thank you all the same!
    If you're in the mood for another grim watch then I can recommend 'Come and See', set in WWII.
    I don't know the Finnish film but I'll have to track it down.
    Best wishes

      I haven't read the book, so the story was all new to me. The score has really stuck with me, especially that deep droning "gong" which hit every now and then but silence is absolutely used well too, you're right. I'll take note of "Come and See", thanks for the recommendation.

    If you can find that TV version, it's actually very good (though on more of a budget, as you say).

      If I do come across it, I'll check it out. Thanks for suggesting, I'm pleased to read that it's also worthwhile.

    There's a very unusual one called CASTLE KEEP.

      Castle Keep is extraordinary - the viewer isn't sure whether it's real or a dream.

    Hi, have you seen finnish "Talvisota"? I think it's best war movie with Das Boot.

      Unfortunately I have not seen Talvisota but I'll take note of it, I'm always grateful for suggestions.

    What is sad is the fact that the only reason those young men were shooting at each other is the fact that their governments put guns in their hands and forced them to.

    • @flyingwiener8946
      @flyingwiener8946  ปีที่แล้ว

      Even on a basic level, I will always refuse to understand how governments can just send (young) people to war without batting an eye. Here especially they were so young.

    Das Boot is also one of the best war movies ever made and follows this template. Same with Starship Troopers, except that the end of ST is even more depressing because they learned nothing.

      @flyingwiener8946  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the recommendations. The last time I saw Starship Troopers was as a teenager, so I need to rewatch as the film would certainly be very different for me now.
      And while Das Boot was a favourite of my grandfather's, I have not seen it yet which I recognise is a bad look as I know it is a very popular film. I should check it out.

      @@flyingwiener8946 Be sure to watch the 4 hour version of Das Boot instead of the hacked up 2 hour version, it's so much better. They left out so much of the realism in the cut down version.

      I feel starship troopers is a whole other thing. because while it does show the death and suffering of the soliders, who have to fight on the frontlines, it is still extremly patriotic. Rico goes from a young boy to battle hardened solider as well, but he doesn't have regret or traumas. this tells a story of someone, who end up as being a super competent soldier with his own battillion under him, where everyone is fully behind him. meanwhile Paul becomes more of a husk of a man than anything else. his body survives the fights but his soul doesnt

      @@calronkeltaran493 Yeah maybe template wasn't a good choice of word, I was more thinking as a war movie with an anti-war message that isn't all preachy or super obvious.

    I've now seen both versions and I have to say that the 1930 version is better because it's 100% into the "Story" of it all.
    The new 2022 - 2023 version seems to miss that and tries to shove true "History" into it, so I wasn't sure if I was watching a "Story" movie or a "Historic" movie. The new version also seemed to have lost the "soul" of the original.
    But please don't get me wrong. The 2023 version had great moments in it. It was nice to see the French St Chamond tank in action instead of the standard British Mark II tank that appears in practically every WWI movie. It also had some "hommoge" moments in it where they re-created scenes or had Easter eggs from the 1930 film. I enjoyed that aspect.
    IDk...just having the "Historical" scenes, like the Germans meeting the French in the rail car, the "Statistics" of how many people were killed flashed on the screen at the end...etc...all added in that "Historical documentary" element in there that I personally think they didn't need and messed the direction up a bit.
    But again, IDk how a 2023 "Clone" version of the 1930's movie would have been either.

      I like both versions for very different reasons and feel both can definitely be enjoyed. Hopefully people do check both out, as they each have their own interesting aspects but I totally see what you mean with the modern one focussing more on actual history. Thanks for commenting!

    Come and see - is THE best anti-war movie ever.
    Nothing compares. Nothing comes even close.
    To me, this one is just another "look how bad the Germans were" type of movie.
    I'd be interested to see what these movies would look like in a US military context.
    Like black people used as cannon fodder and then never again mentioned anywhere in history.
    Or just even all the poor and low-income kids getting recruited for the same fait.
    But at least they reaped some of the glory.
    However, this isn't a bad "anti-war" film.
    I actually enjoyed it.

      Come and see is on the list, but I'm dreading it a bit too, in case it's too much but that exactly is the point I guess
