Had to chop this one up more than I would have liked to get it cleared for TH-cam. I learned a lot for the next movie reaction, however! For anyone who wants to see the full reaction, it's available to Patreon supporters here: www.patreon.com/posts/music-murder-37-112368386

In the Broadway play the daughter's motivations are a lot more clear, they cut A LOT of her dialogue and a whole song between her and Anthony.

Yep, 'cause back then, with all that amount of time for the stageplay, they could go with a full choral story. In a movie, choices had to be made: risking to make it last three hours and being dispersive, or being simple and focusing much more on the real two main characters?

Can never get the songs from Sweeney Todd out of my head, and glad people are trying to get past the censors to upload these. No Place Like London and My Friends, specifically. Recently the band Black Veil Brides released a song called "Bleeders", you'll recognise just how much they wanted it to be a Sweeney Todd song.

The sailor from the ship's actor is Jamie Campbell Bower. after Stranger Things season 4 it's strange seeing someone who doesn't know who he is 😅

The stage version is 80% sung through. Major opera companies have put on productions of the show. This and Into The Woods are considered Sondheim's two masterpieces. If you want to see the original stage production with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn, it's available on DVD. The movie cuts out the chorus sections, keeping the instrumentals. Both the stage show and the movie are rollercoasters once the plot gets moving. Sondheim preferred to call Sweeney Todd a "musical thriller," which isn't that far off.

I saw the Broadway production, with Lansbury and Len Cariou (both Cariou and Hearn are wonderful and work beautifully with Lansbury). Before that, I had memorized the cast album. As much as I appreciate the work and dedication of this movie version, and as much as I do know that Sondheim had no negative comments on the result, for me, this version is ... well ... a bit anemic. There's a pitch black humor to the piece that's leached out of the movie, for me, and a kind of flatness to some of the delivery of some of the scenes. Johanna's character isn't all that much in the stage production, but there's more to her there than there is here, including an action that she takes on stage which shows some real gumption and backbone. On the other hand, how often do you get the chance to hear Rickman sing! And he does so well! Depp and Bonham-Carter always work well together, and it's always nice to watch. I wish I could like the movie version more than I do, but I don't.

The role of Toby is usually played by an adult on stage, he is played as having an intellectual disability which is why he acts like a child but casting an adult is obviously easier for a stage play. (In fact, idk if you know Neil Patrick Harris but he played Toby on stage as an adult).
I do like they changed it to an actual child in the movie, it makes the whole final sequence more creepy. I feel so sorry for the character either way tho, he is completely broken.

The published stage script for SWEENEY TODD describes Toby as "adolescent." Broadway's original Toby was Ken Jennings (not the JEOPARDY guy). He had a glorious tenor voice, and though he was in his 30s when the show opened, he was small enough to appear youthful, and played the character as being simple-minded and childlike. His performance, along with Angela Lansbury's, is preserved on both the show's Original 1979 Cast (Audio) Recording, and on the 1982 professionally-shot video of the Broadway Touring Company. In professional productions with open runs, to avoid the trouble and expense of employing growing child or teen actors with potentially changing voices, I believe the role has always been played by an adult, sometimes youthful-looking, but sometimes not. What's odd about the movie is that although they cast Ed Sanders, an actual child with an unchanged voice, they also removed all of the qualities that made him seem childlike in the play. The movie's Toby is hard as nails compared to the play's Toby.

HUGE Stephen Sondheim fan. Most of his pieces do not translate to film easily, but Tim Burton did a masterful job on this one. Sad that some great music was cut from the stage score, but it really was necessary. Such a terrific film. Thanks for a great reaction to this. Not a lot of reactors do this one.
Also, to answer your question, yes, most newer Broadway musicals are more sung-through than old school musicals. Less book scenes. It's not a hard and fast rule, but it is the norm now. In fact, Sweeney Todd may have been the one to sort of lead to that.

Johnny Depp also sang in ‘CryBaby’. You should give it a watch.

I just realized, Johnny Depp's got the higher register Bowie voice going on (the singer-songwriter Bowie).

The movie is great. I recommend that you listen to Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball singing on the album of the stage musical.
I have wondered how Alan Rickman would have done singing Mea Culpa. The judge stews in his guilt for his lust for his ward Joanna.
