  • I bought a not working TaoTao 50cc scooter on Craigslist for $200. Can I get it working?
I have corrected the title removing the GY6 as it has been pointed out to me this not a GY6.

This is like reality TV for scooter mechanics, one problem/challenge after another but finally getting it right!

Watching you struggle without snap ring pliers had me rolling.

Man I just want to say thanks for solving the weeks of torture for me I have been trying to fix my 150 but I never got an ideal of what could be the problem and I can’t believe it was just a simple fix

If you watched even 1 video about removing the cover before you went ape on it you were done even faster than you got the cover of now.

this video is a wake up call for me. I'm just some pothead who knows dick about working on cars, looks like the diagnostic process can be a nightmare for those who aren't mechanically inclined.

I'm having flashbacks to a teenage me with an old Vespa. No internet back then so all I had to go on was a Haynes Manuel and guess work.

Jeff before you buy a new carb you can cut slits on the blank screw heads for a flat head screwdriver to get them out

I appreciate the effort taken but it just hurt to see how this was carried out

This is actually a great video on what is NOT the problem and how NOT to "fix" this scooter. The starter is accessible by removing the seat cowling. However, if you are determined to remove the belt cover (great if you want to inspect the belt), there are two access points towards the bottom and front in which you can insert a screw driver and pop the cover off after removing all bolts. DOH!!!! I haven't even finished the rest of this video or the series 2 of this video, but hey, why not watch it until my part arrives from Amazon today to figure out what else not to do. The kickstart clamp is a snap ring, and you can get a set of snap ring pliers for $3.99 at Harbor Freight. The gasket underneath the belt cover is there to prevent dirt and water from entering and boogering up the components underneath.

Good job for figuring things out without a manual!

The reason the fan gear broke is because there is supposed to be a washer between the gear and casing that gets forgotten during assembly, the washer acts as a ride for the gear to keep the gear from digging itself into the casing thus breaking the kickstart

Don't use that helmet if you don't know its history, it's not worth it. Easy to buy a new Lid but you cant replace your face

I tried my best to replace the kickstarter like you did, but I couldn't get the shaft of the half moon gear to go thru enough to put the lock washer in place. I did get it to work by putting the gear in just hooked on the short hook, put the snap washer on it, then took a screw driver and pulled on the long side of spring and looped it around it's post (it wasn't too hard). The whole new kickstarter is a booger to get in!!!!

I’ve worked on a few different branded Chinese scooters and they are an absolute nightmare.. TaoTao is a popular brand so parts are at least pretty easy to find.. And $200 is a great deal !
