I think not adding insulation to the flooring is a mistake. You're losing a lot of heat and the floors are very cold. Adding insulation can help keep the floors warm in winter & cool in summer. It also reduces drafts & improve indoor air quality. Lack of insulation can lead to condensation & mold growth. Hopefully you'll add insulation later before these problems occur. In Alaska its recommended to insulate the perimeter of floor with at least two inches of polystyrene or urethane. Underfloor insulation can be retrofitted if enough space to move around. Adding a sheet of vinyl floor on top sides helps as well.
I too LOVE the idea that you’re using scrap to do a job. I would like to suggest your next tool…..A Nail gun!! It would be faster and ultimately cheaper than the screws. The screws can be quite pricey!!
He has a nail gun. They are definitely convenient. He used it in the framing and roof episodes. We used screws for this so it’ll be easier to remove in the spring. This was just a quick, cheap, temporary solution. He’ll be replacing it with something more permanent and then adding a deck all the way around in the summer after the siding is put on. I’m sure he’ll recycle the screws to a different project. We like to get as much use out of materials as possible.
We love your channel. You guys are so much like we were when we were younger. We have stopped watching several channels because when they got making a lot of money on TH-cam they got unbearable. Don't ever change!

The insulation of floors in your cabin will save heat and prevent mold from growth, and keep plumbing from freezing, its very necessary to do this on all cabins built in Alaska.....
When we lived a few hours further north, our cabin had the perimeter underneath insulated but not the floors. It allowed heat to transfer down and even with the much colder temperatures up there, our pipes never froze. We found it worked well and that’s why we are not insulating the floors on this one.
Welcome to Alaska little brother and little sister 😂 We have lived here for 12 years and would never even think about moving back to the lower 48 states .
Sweenies in Soldotna has a bargain shed behind the main store. Ive had luck getting good boots, rain gear, jackets and coveralls there for a good discounted price. Best of luck this winter, hopefully its an easy one.
You did a great job skirting the house with all that scrap wood. Hope it helps keep you warmer.Looks like you need to cut or get a lot of wood. Have you considered a propane refrigerator and stove.
We were able to find a propane cooking stove on Marketplace for $50! I’ll show it in a future episode. Haven’t run across a propane fridge yet and they’re just to expensive for us to buy new unfortunately. I keep looking on the classifieds though, maybe one will pop up 🤞
I love how you're using up scrap material to solve a temporary problem. I mean skirting the cabin is not a temporary need, but this way things stay much warmer until next season when you'll have time to do permanent skirting and decking. I had no idea that buying subscribers was even a thing! Don't stress over how things "look". You are being real, authentic, showing actual struggles. Take things one step at a time and you'll realize your dreams.
Friends of mine that go to Alaska use them military surplus boots they're usually white and you can pump air into them they said nothing works better you can get trans Alaskan pack boots but they are very tall mine are about 3 and 1/2 in on the bottom sole but my feet have never been cold and they hold up very well
I enjoy your 4 legged supervisors. They are always there to help you! Lol... I hope you have time to get enough firewood. Just a suggestion to save time just cut them to a length you can lift and load. Make a pile close to your house or wood shed. After you have lots stacked by cabin or wood shed you can block and split. Even if its not all cut to length and split you wont be out in the deep snow trying to find dry wood this winter. I cut all my wood to fit the box of my Polaris Ranger and haul to my home. I have racks on my Ranger box so i can take good sized loads. Snow and cold is just around the corner. Best of luck to you!!!
You folks are doing things the way our family lived my whole life long. It's wonderful to see "real life" in action still. Keep up the good work ! Sharon in IN.

Soon. Firewood is making its way up the to-do list. We’ll be working on the hearth for the stove this week. It’s been a waiting game with local shops to get pieces for the stove pipe. I truly hope it helps and works out for you I don't mean to be negative lol honestly it's just that knowing Alaska gets 20 ft or more of snow sometimes and the permafrost me I would design it in a way to wear my plumbing at least my water lines were in my house back to back kitchen wall to bathroom wall minimal and when you use PEX it's much easier to freeze a little and expand an emergencies it's expensive but the best in your condition I have had a lot of ups and downs myself I have built three of my homes contractor most of my life I know you're going to change that OSB it will never last ground contract probably the first year the bottom will split but you'll get at least three years with no electricity you can't run heat tape efficiently? I know you guys will figure it out as you have no choice I wish you well and wish you luck 🤞 be safe
I do like this. when making the floor joist put a 1x4 to the bottom of the joists before install them, then you have a support for the sheets that hold the insulation, you make the insulation after you get the roof and walls water proof. Now you can build your walls on the floor joists no problem if it gona rain and damage any insulation and plywood floor, use a 2-4 plywood sheets that you can move around. put up the wall frames and add 2x2 on the outside (no plywood needed) then put tyvek on the 2x2, you have a water proof wall that you can insulate from the inside later on and bec you have horizontal and vertical insulation you have less cool bridge in the wall and not need spend on plywood on the outside. Also with this metod you do not have a plywood floor hows go between the wall and the floor frame, less problem if you got a leak from wall or floor. Easy to put the wall panels on the outside on the 2x2 and if you using lock panels you now have a ventilated wall. Then do the ventilated roof, now you have a water proof house and you can work inside to insulate the dry floor from the inside ,put the sheets on the 1x4 you already install on the joists and then insulation and then plastic and then the sheets. With this metod you have half of the costs on plywood on the walls and you get a quicker water proof house and not using plywood on the outside and only tyvek you got walls how breathe much better. Bec you got a quicker waterproof house you have no hurry and can store materials inside instead of have them outside in the rain. So just put all frames up make it water proof and move on from there.
@@ouralaskahomestead Thanks i just send this to another builder, maybe you find something to help you. @MartinJohansson-nn5dv för 35 minuter sedan (redigerad) Hi, this going to be nice to follow you. When you frame the floor its time for rise the walls with noggins. I dont use plywood on the outside reason is that you dont need that and if you gona have plywood on the inside its double costs for plywood. When the wall frame is up you now notice that its much easy to adjust the walls without the plywood and its not heavy to rice the frame and if its wet weather its no problem bec you dont have a plywood floor. Also you got a wall that is direct to the floor framing without a plywood between wall and floor, if you have any leak from outside or inside its easyer to fix the floor if its not under the wall. When the walls are adjusted. lock the wall frame with 2x2 with C/C size (for insulation) and on the outside you put Tyvek, the reason only using tyvek is that Plywood is glued with many layers and not breath as good as Tyvek. Now you have a wall that can easy be insulated from the inside when you get a water proof house. First the horizontal 2 inch insulation between the 2x2 and then the normal insulation vertical, now you have a wall that not have any cold bridges and easy to make a VENTILATED wall with vertical lock panels. When it comes to the roof check so you have a ventilated roof as well and do the metal parts before install the metal roof. Now you got a water proof house much quicker and can start with the inside job and store some materials inside instead of being wet outside. Remember that you install the 1x4 on the floor joist before you frame the joist, now you can easy drop down a bottom sheet (there are many kind of materials for this and i use a fiber cement when i build houses in the wood bec no mouses eat concrete). So where was we, yes drop the sheets down, you can glue them to the 1x4 if you like or nail them if you use softer sheets. Then install insulation and they also in C/C dimension and then end with a moisture membran ex plastic. Same with floor, walls and roof, all must have moisture membran from the INSIDE bec your moisture comes from the inside and you do not want moisture in your walls, special if you using plywood how stops walls to breath. If some one have questions, feel free to ask. So again use C/C and you also install plywood on the inside without cutting them. Good luck to you all. One more thing if you use wooden windows and doors you need a gap when make the walls for the frames. I use soft insulation bec there are some screws made for doors and windows so you can adjust the frame, your house is make of wood and it can moves over time and it could be nice to adjust them special the ones how gona be open. If you using spray foam it can push the frames and it get hard. Also more easy to install the drain pipes from inside the water proof house without a floor,

Any kind of skirting is better than nothing !!! My 1st pump house was built out of particle board as that is what I could afford ! Eventually, snow, rain, ground moisture will rot those boards then you can replace with something better.
Welcome to the Alaska scene, guys. I dont live there, but I've been following folks that moved there like you did for years. Your skirting looks good. It should help stop the drafts. You spend too much time thinking about what other people might be thinking. Man, just do your thing, stop putting yourselves down, and people will follow. Dont disparage other channels. I've seen people get themselves in trouble doing that more than once. Just do your own thing, and people will follow. Just lookin out for ya. Muck boots would be good in warmer weather. I dont think they'd be warm enough for the Alaska wintertime, though i could be wrong depending on where you are in Alaska. I'll have to catch up, I just found ya.
Thank you 😊 We’ll be putting a combination of metal and wood on it in the spring. I’m not sure how long the wrap is supposed to last but it’s not unusual to see people use it for years or permanently up here. It should be fine to overwinter with it. The overhangs are enough that the only time the exterior walls get wet is if it’s raining and blowing sideways.
Have you thought about getting a propane fridge? I LOVE muck boots.....they are overpriced like everything else, but I could wear them everyday......they are comfy, warm and have good traction IMO. Don't know how much snow ya get there and maybe you don't need a high boot, we like KEEN as well
I would love a propane fridge but they never come up used around here and there’s no way we can afford a new one, they’re quite pricey! Soon it’ll be cold enough to just leave the coolers outside. I’ve already went from using a bag of ice per day down to two per week. We plan to get a solar set up together over the winter that’ll be able to run a 14cubic foot fridge. The last pair of Keens Craig had didn’t even last one season 😞 I’m from a horsey background and I know Muck Boots are very popular as barn boots. They would be nice and warm.
I know i can message on fb but I'm doing it this way to help add comments but I'm not sure if Y.T. has changed since i use to upload but i let the ads play through in hopes of yall getting a few more decimal points over on pays per view on the ads instead of skipping ads and not even getting a fraction of a penny per view lol. Is it still that way in the analytics where you can see how many views skipped the ads vs watching them and the difference in the monetary amount received? I'm hoping it hasn't changed, cuz then yall will get more from the ads being watched. Any lil way i can help contribute, i will ;)
It is 4x4. The SXS would have done fine had we been here to keep it maintained. We lived further north before moving here where there was much more snow and had no problem keeping it plowed with a four wheeler. We’ll be here from the start for this winter.

It should be fine to overwinter with it. The overhangs are enough that the only time the exterior walls get wet is if it’s raining and blowing sideways.
Safety glasses guys
The last pair of Keens Craig had didn’t even last one season 😞
I’m from a horsey background and I know Muck Boots are very popular as barn boots. They would be nice and warm.
Who is the snow ruin that OSB looks great
I know i can message on fb but I'm doing it this way to help add comments but I'm not sure if Y.T. has changed since i use to upload but i let the ads play through in hopes of yall getting a few more decimal points over on pays per view on the ads instead of skipping ads and not even getting a fraction of a penny per view lol. Is it still that way in the analytics where you can see how many views skipped the ads vs watching them and the difference in the monetary amount received? I'm hoping it hasn't changed, cuz then yall will get more from the ads being watched. Any lil way i can help contribute, i will ;)
We appreciate your support. Thank you.
@@ouralaskahomestead my pleasure! 110%!!!
You do what you got to do, but that OSB isn't going to last very long with it touching the ground.
Just needs to last the winter. We’ve got different plans for it in the spring.
@@ouralaskahomestead it’ll do that
Is your jeep 4 wheel drive? If so Get plow for it for snow!!!
It is 4x4. The SXS would have done fine had we been here to keep it maintained. We lived further north before moving here where there was much more snow and had no problem keeping it plowed with a four wheeler. We’ll be here from the start for this winter.
Just put sheets of high density foam on the floor before finishing your floor. That stuff is great. Make a sandwich out of it.
