    That's a great question, I really don't know much on Iridium, but I found out this much on line. " On an unmodified car that specifies normal plugs, platinum or iridium plugs won't make much of a difference apart from cost; I'd stick with the manufacturer's recommendation and change the plugs as per schedule. On an engine that has been modified with higher compression or more boost, it might be worth springing for platinum or iridium plugs. hope this helps out.
    Cheers!

    Hey bernbo, I know this has nothing to do with the vid but does my v star 650 suppose to have a little play in the clutch lever? I can't seem to get use to it. Took it out for a spin and killed it atleast 20 times on hills and taking off. It seems to grab only when I let it all the way out. Everything I've ridden grabs between 1/2 to 3/4 when I let off. When I get it going I love it but hate coming to a stop light.lol Any help would be much appreciated.

  • @bernbo
    @bernbo  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @syyyo It sounds like you need to adjust it, you should have a little play in the clutch lever 1/8 in or a the thickness of a quarter, as long as it is not tight. Check out my "Before and after Show Chrome lever install" video it show what I mean. Hope this helps you out.

      You can do with out it, just don't go to nuts on it.

  • @bernbo

    @73FIREful I think you clean and gap them every 7000 km and replace them every 13,000 km, but for what its worth if you got them out to clean and gap them, for 7 or 8 bucks you can put a set of new plugs in.

    Hey man... I have this bike as well... mine won’t shift up past neutral any suggestions?

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure, what may be causing that, I looked up some trouble shooting on it and it could be a number of things. Difficult shifting
      1 incorrect clutch adjustment
      2 incorrect clutch operation
      3 bent shift fork shaft
      4 damaged shift fork guid
      5 bent or damaged shift fork
      6 worn gear dogs or slots
      7 damaged shift drum grooves.
      What I would check 1st is you have the proper oil level, being a wet clutch that is important. You may have to take it in to the shop and have them look at it.

    • @pminneci77
      @pminneci77 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bernbo - Sounds good. My 2005 F150 had a 2-piece plug that would seize itself in the block w/ carbon buildup - then break in half when trying to pull them out. Not fun - sh!tty design. So they recommend to add a thin layer of anti-seize to prevent future breaks.
      Gonna tackle changing oil/brake fluid this weekend. I just picked up a 2005 Vstar Classic w/ 5K - so I'm sure those need to be looked at. Rear Gear should be kosher - as you stated it's at about 16K.
      Keep the vids coming - and F#ck your noisy neighbor!

    Hey, thanks for the video. I just bought an 05 650 Silverado and love, love it. But I'm having trouble with the friction zone. I have read about these having a difficult time taking off in first because of it. I'm 4 years exerienced and I'm killing it 50% of the time. I have ordered the Clevver Lever and hope to be able to install it myself. Are you familiar with the install? And what do you think about them?
    Thanks for any advice you might have. Sharon

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharon Miller Hi Sharon, congrats on your new bike. Sorry I don't know anything about the Clevver Lever, but I know what you mean about the friction zone being right at the top, it's just something I got used to, haven't had any issues though. Sorry for not being of much help on this.

    • @sharonmiller8418
      @sharonmiller8418 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem, Bernbo. It's a clutch lever that is designed to increase the friction zone for slow speed handling. This guy came up with the idea for his own V Star and it worked and now he sells them. The reviews are really good. I practiced a lot today in beautiful Indiana spring weather and am getting better. I guess we can adapt to anything when it comes to doing something we love so much. Thanks for the response! I will keep you in mind if I have other questions. Hope that's cool with you.

    I got a question you look like a fairly large guy is the 650 just as good as 1100 I have a 650 I weigh 265 lb I don't have too much of a problem I don't know how much distance there is in the length versus the 1100 but I'm six to am I going to feel about the same on the 1100 as the 650 can I maybe just put extended pegs to see if that helps

      Hey Larry, The 1100 has a 64.8" wheelbase and is 96.9" long
      the 650 has a 64.0" wheelbase and is 96.5" long So they are pretty much the same size bike, the 1100 has quite a bit more power and torque for sure. You may want to put on a set of forward controls to fit the bike to you better. My buddy Paul put a set of 4in forward controls on his 1100 which made a big difference for him, he is 6.4" Hope this helps out. Cheers!

    Hey Bernbo. I saw this video back when I got my v star 650 a year ago. since then Ive done a little bit here and there. I recently chopped the pipes and had my neighbor fab some straight pipes. Needless to say after I rode it for a while I wanted to make sure the plugs were ok so I know if a re-jet was needed. Plugs have some scoring on them so I am pretty sure what direction I'm headed in however when I went to torque the plug down I warped the tool that came in the Yammi Kit. Wondering how it is possible to over tighten as you said when the tool doesn't seem like it would even allow that. A little pissed I gotta say. Your thoughts?

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      drunkenboxersack That's weird that it would warp the spark plug socket that came in the Yamaha kit. 13 ft pounds is really not that tight. Not sure what happened there.

      The wrench I'm using is a bit of a beast. I'm thinking that it is simply not functioning properly anymore. It seemed like I was really torquing the thing and didn't feel right. I don't think I did any damage since the tool gave out, but now I need to see about getting a new tool and a torque wrench that is more like the one you used just to make sure. Bike starts up and there is no abnormalities, so there's that. Takeiteass!

    I have a 2006 1100, and the wire that comes from the coil to the spark plug came out of the spark plug boot. When I went to get a new one, I noticed that the boot and wire arent sold connected. How do I connect them? The spark plug boot has what looks like a screw pointing at me.

    Hi love watching your videos. I have a 2009 vstar 650 love the bike. My question do you get a lot of vibration from when you accerate the bike? Starts right up idels perfect but when i accerate the bike I get a lot of vibration from the motor. New to motorcyles. thank you and ride safe..

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      withGodallthings777 No I don't really get a lot of vibration on acceleration. Vibration from the motor can be many different things, here are a few things you can check out yourself, proper oil level, clean air filter, proper gap on spark plugs or replace spark plugs. Check engine mounts and make sure they are tight. If the valves have not been adjusted in the last 7000 to 8000 km you may want to take it in to your local bike shop and have the valves adjusted. Hope this helps you out in some way. Cheers

    I have an unrelated problem but a lot of other seem to have the same problem. The front cylinder on my Vstar 1100 fires perfect but the rear cylinder misses a lot. If I hold my hand behind the exhaust the pressure from the back cylinder is less. There is no black smoke but I can tell there is less power. Thanks in advance if you can help.

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you have a dead plug, maybe try switching the plugs and see if that changes anything.

    Hi Bernbo, I saw in one of you videos how u cleaned (polish) your brother rear fender with WD-40 and another solution. I have same sticker on my rear fender and it won't come out the glue after I removed the sticker. Can u please tell me what solution was that?...I mean the one you have used to polish the fender. Many thanks!

    Just Subscribed!, I bought the same bike 650 Vstar it's fuel injected. Question 1. Can you use a regular spark plug socket and ratchet or should you use the one provided in kit like you used? Last question. I just bought the bike, The guy told me it has old gas in it. On deceleration it backfires. Sounds like a Harley LOL But it's running lean. i have got half of the old gas out, Put 80 miles on it. Little over half a tank I believe so I filled it with 87 obtain. Will it be ok to ride it like this until I get all the old gas out? With it backfiring out pipes on deceleration? then put in new plugs? Or should I drain the tank. Being fuel injected I don't know how to drain tank. Love your videos!

      @bernbo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi hyungs, You could probably use a regular spark plug socket & ratchet, if not just use the one that Yamaha supplied in the tool kit. As for the gas you could just siphon out the old gas and top it up with fresh gas. Does the bike still have the stock exhaust or an aftermarket exhaust system, I know when I changed the pipes on my bike I had big pops & bangs on deceleration, so I had to get the carbs rejetted and that solved the problem. You may want to take it in to your local mechanic and get a spring tune up to get the fuel to air mixture just right. Hope this helps you out, thanks for the Sub thanks for watching & Takeiteass!

      ***** It has Bub exhaust on it. Not sure but I don't think it's stock.

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bub exhaust nice, those would be aftermarket pipes. Sounds like your fuel air mixture needs adjustment, that should fix the popping on decel.

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Perry Hey Paul, the saddle bags don't fit with the solo bag on the bike, it's either the solo bag or the saddle bags which is okay for me. If i'm doing a big trip the bags go back on.

    Need your help. Need to know daily and weekly check points. Also I change oil every 5000 miles. Does that sound about right? And what else should be change at that time.

    • @bernbo
      @bernbo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert, changing oil every 5000 miles is ok, the manual suggests every 4,400 miles or 7000 km. I do highly recommend picking up a Clymer Manual though, it can save you a lot of money. www.clymer.com/search/?prodtype_ss=Motorcycle+Manuals&make=Yamaha&model=V-Star+650+Classic&year=1998 Hope this helps you out.
