    You clipping the wire to make spikes gave me flash backs of my army days. I tripped and fell into a pit of coiled razor wire at night and it took 5 dudes to pull me out.

    Mel dip the sealing wire in vinegar and let it dry it starts to oxidize naturally and turns out more realistic.

    Quick tip: when cutting with metal ruler and sharp blades; stand up over the work. his allows you to put better downard force on the ruler & knife. Sitting, you're kinda 'side-on'. Cheers for your marvelous tutorials Mel

    Great video, thanks. Confirmed I was on the right track, have been doing similar by using a length of thin florist wire and tuell or in other words fabric net. Its easier to cut the netting if its sprayed first with a cheap paint & left to dry so it's stiff. Then cut millimetre strips of the netting so that the cells that have been cut stick out sharp. I put glue along the wire & wrap the fine cut netting around the wire then spray paint the whole thing with black, grey or brown. You can get a rust effect by collecting actual rust from old tools or machinery etc & mix with PVA glue. The overall effect turns out pretty good.

    Tie little knots with fine fishing line (you’ll need to paint it after) every one or two inches to create barbs that won’t snag or catch on things but look great

    For a quick and uniform twist, use a cordless drill set to a low speed setting. Also, you can get a nice effect by twisting thin wire with a length of the mesh or vinyl screen. Looks perfect in 1/72 scale.

    Hiya Mel, another great video! I remembered a very old technique from years ago how to make cheap barbed wire.... get a length of bulk standard cotton, tie a loose knot every so often, go back in with a small pair of scissors to make the barbs. Then a very light coat of pva over the cotton wrapped around a wooden dowel, Wait to dry and then you are away. Please feel free to share with the community. Only downside, is that it takes bloody forever to make. Kind Regards Johnny

    The aluminum mesh trick is a close looking barbed wire. I’m going to try two strands twisted together,should give me the the barbs I’m looking for.
    I work in fencing as my job and absolutely hate the stuff.

    Nice and to the point! (Dammit, this is getting to be a habit. Sorry.)
    Anyway, I was a bit surprised you cut thru that steel mesh, but I love that effect. Try going down to a hardware store or lumberyard where they replace vinyl window screens. Ask them for scraps of old discarded mesh. That way you can get long sections of barb wire. One good sized window will yield enough for a year. I asked a guy for a square foot of it, he reached in the trash can and gave me a square yard! I cut it with scissors, super easy.

  • @TheBushdoctor68
    @TheBushdoctor68 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nice video with those different techniques.
    I used a different method back when I was in to terrain making that looked really good but takes a bit more time to create.
    You take 2 pieces of wire and you basically wrap one around the other, but with intervals.
    So, let's say you wrap a wire around another straight one. You make 2 or 3 wraps tightly together, and then you skip about 10 mm where you just pull the wire to the next spot where you want to wrap 2 or 3 times. This by itself already creates a great effect because your mind recognizes the wraps as part of a barbed wire. If you really want to go nuts, you can put a drop of superglue on each wrapped section, and then go back to cut the small wire connections between those sections. That basically creates a perfect mini copy of real barbed wire. But even without that last part, the barbed wire comes out really nice looking.

    If you want to make it using the cut method you can take window screens spray paint it silver and cut with scissors. It won't be as stiff and is best used as strait line barbed wire between posts. Use a spot of superglue to secure as needed. Tinsel twisted is surprisingly strong and STUPID CHEAP and surpassingly strong but again use it in straight lines. Mel your a Genius as usual GREAT VIDEO:)!

    Hey Mel what if you used the mesh wire you cut from the mesh sheet as your middle wire then twist the three wire together. It should be all done someone try this out and let me know how you liked it.

    • @scottmcgrath272
      @scottmcgrath272 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've thinking and we know sometimes that's not a good thing. But instead of the two wires and the mesh straight cut wound together maybe just the one wire wound around the mesh cut. Try that. As always Mel you never disappoint. Thanks for posting.
