  • On this special episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by a wonderful returning guest, Cultural Hall, to give you all "the talk" your parents may have avoided!
Buckle your seatbelts as we delve into the history of masturbation warning messages from the church through the decades. Our focus will be on the Mark E. Peterson pamphlet, "Steps to Overcoming Masturbation," as we take you through the wild ride that represents most of our growing up years.
And of course we couldn't cover this topic without a shout out to Elder Boyd K. Packer's "The Little Factory" talk as well.
Hopefully no one will be too triggered.. We were pretty triggered just taping the episode, haha..

I was also present at the priesthood session of conference when Boyd K Packer gave this thought. I felt so much shame for years because of his very damaging talk.

My sister got pregnant by her Mormon boyfriend when she was 16. We are never mos, but were in a military base overseas everyone went to an American school for military kids. He wasn’t allowed to masturbate but definitely pressured my sister into having sex. His punishment was to confess to his bishop, but after that, he went on to serve a Mission, marry a Mormon & is now raising daughters in the Mormon faith. I don’t know if his wife & daughters even know he has a child out in the world. My sister was shipped off to grandma’s in Oregon & gave her daughter up for adoption. There has been a lifetime of trauma from that guy. I am fascinated with all things Mormon as a result of watching my sister go through everything she went through & then seeing her once boyfriend go on to live such a normal Mormon life…so much awfulness in that doctrine

Go confront his ass with the truth. Your sister shouldn’t face the trauma alone with him being so off the hook. I guarantee you he never told his wife. Tell her first.

Thank you for this episode! I attended that infamous October 1976 Boyd K. Packer talk during the priesthood session as a 22 year-old returned missionary, and I remember sitting there terrified, embarrassed and numb. His was such a dark, sinister voice. My generation was continually traumatized over the “egregious sin of masturbation”, and it’s hard to express just how deeply those scars run. Add to that the incessant trauma and self doubt over self-realization in some of us over sexual orientation, and the entire era was a hot, pernicious mess. This deeply unhealthy Mormon attitude toward normal sexuality caused so much fear and shame that it’s hard to describe to kids now who may not have experienced it to the same degree. I’m relieved for them. To survive, we learned to lie… and lie easily out of self preservation, and that is one of the dark legacies of Mormonism.

My dad gave me that 'guide to self control' by Petersen. I had a paper copy of the 21 ways to stop masturbating. My dad (who was a stake president at the time) also told me some of those. It's a real thing.

I'm a never mormon. Anytime I hear about the church's stance on mastiry, or even sex, I replace those words in my mind with Shaking Hands to see how ridiculous it is. You will go to hell if you shake hands with someone outside of marriage. You have a hand shaking addiction. Etc.

    This episode was fantastic!
I was born in 1987 and one of my earliest memories is my mother stopping me from masterbating. So I knew I wasn't supposed to do it, but other than that one correction not one ever mentioned it! I kept doing it.
Then in the early 2000s I was at girls camp and one of our leaders gave a fireside all about how bad it was. That's when I learned the word masterbation and began trying to stop. I never could.
I also starting lying to bishops about it on and off. In college I told a bishop and he asked for graphic details and took the sacrament from me for a while. When I was around 25 confessed to a singles ward bishop and he said to just try not to do it.
I finally stopped attending church when I was about 30. I am grateful I could never stop masturbating because it kept me feeling unworthy and due to that feeling I never got my endowment. Bullet dodged!

This will be very fun. And if you want an LDS therapist who has done a deep dive into the history of masturbation and teachings about it in the church, look up Daniel Burgess. He’s lives in Utah now. He’s know him from San Jose CA. He has so much knowledge on this topic! He did a lot of research!

Nobody mentioned this but all the masturbation stuff was only aimed at boys, not girls. The Mormon church's "sexless women" viewpoint didn't help the many young girls who were sexualized by adult males.

I was watching a podcast by a urologist recently. She cited research that shows regular weekly ejaculation (by sex or masturbation) reduced male prostate cancer by over 20%. Considering the majority of the male population of the church is single, masturbation has health benefits.

At 11:25. The Miracle of Forgiveness is no longer carried by Deseret Books. It has been denounced in the last two years by two Seventies at public meetings. The book is seen as outdated, filled with ideas about masturbation from the 1960s. I do not recommend it to members in the church. There are other books on sin, forgiveness and sexuality that are much better.

I could be wrong but the Kellogg brothers were obsessed with this. The church was influenced by such people. They also were involved with alcohol prohibition. A national disaster second only to drug prohibition. They seemed to be attracted to bad ideas which they imposed on the members.

57:39 this is actually where we get graham crackers from. There was a theory back in the 1800s that spicy or rich foods increased “the passions” so the moral salvation of young men (or anyone else for that matter) might be found in bland whole grain foods.
