Thank you for this wonderful film. The acting is perfection. I saw this when I was a young woman. Now, I am an old woman. The film holds up very well through the many decades.
What a magnificent film; haven't watched it in decades. Gibson and Weaver, so gifted with screen presence. They were at the peak of their fame in the 80s, and with good reason. This was the role of Linda Hunt's life, and she was terrific.
I saw the Year of Living Dangerously in the theater when it came out. I was an instant fan of Peter Weir after I saw Gallipoli. He is Australia's greatest filmmaker. Linda Hunt defines the meaning of actress in this film.
Brilliant film. Finally got the opportunity to see it again after all these years. Linda Hunt an enigma. Terrific performance. Gibson, naive, just starting off on his way to stardom and all that it entails.
1) Lots of people speak informally. 2) When we say a film is brilliant we are giving credit to the director for doing a highly successful job with the film - the director's work was brilliant. Supplementary credit for a great script, great acting, great cinematography, etc. - key components of a great, "brilliant" film.
Weir is a tool of the US evil empire. He failed to document that it was the US govt via CIA that propped up Sukarno who murdered MILLIONS of his own people to stay in power and serve Americans.
Classic movie. Cinematography, dialogue, acting by Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hunt (playing a male photographer) transcending a historical moment in time- the Indonesian Revolution of 1965. Thanks for showing
This movie back in a days won some few big awards.. There were few recognised Filipino actors, Bembol Rocco the taxi driver and Kuh Ledesma she served Mel Gibson some tea. She's a famous singer back in the 80s. Thank you for uploading this classic 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🍻
This is truly one of the most well done movies I've ever seen. All the actors were at their best. Ive seen it many times and will definitely watch it again. Linda Hunt was amazing.
Peter Weir brings me such joy and respect to his brand of storytelling. I remember as a kid so amazed at the uniqie subtle beauty of Sigorney Weaver. Galipoli is another stunning film and collaboration with Weir n Gibson. Must see.
Hard to believe this is the first time watching this at 40, really good film. A lot more poignant now that i live in Indonesia and having spoke to family who lived through this massacre.
Not-so-guilty secret: I'm a film buff. I've seen thousands of films from every era. I love a lot of the predictable directors and films and have seen many over two dozen times. However, this is the film that I have seen more than any other - probably close to 70 times. It speaks to me on so many levels.
@JoeVandenberg-t6q I read the book twice. I've taught Buddhist meditation for 25 years. I used to be a History professor. I've lived in Indonesia for 7 years. So you put all these things together and the movie resonates on so many levels.
My father was Indonesian, born in 1940, who emigrated to Europe in the early 60-s. I remember watching this movie with him several times and although he generally liked the movie, I recall distinctly how uncomfortable he was at a few of the scenes, namely - the handicapped dwarf dance, the prostitutes swarming over the 2 characters and the poverty and sickness scenes in the harbor. Also, he was not very fond of how Sukarno was portrayed - for his generation, Sukarno was more of a hopeful figure who tried to elevate the country above outside dependence and bring meaningful reforms in just about everything. It was much less about political affiliation.
@@anairenemartinez165 You will have to be more precise in your question, I don't understand what you mean. But I can tell you this now: why would anybody care about what some obsolete political figure like QE II had to say about anything, particularly issues outside the UK?
@dixjam2258 because, QE II obviously has more experience and a smarter mind than you will ever achieve, I'm sorry to say. And this is coming from someone who is not a monarchist at all.
@ Smart has nothing to do with what is being discussed here, I am not a political figure, I am not in public office and I don't take decisions affecting millions of people. But for the sake of the argument, here is where I am definitely smarter than QE II: I am earning my livelihood in the private sector, using my skills and my knowledge. I had/have no inheritance, no hand-outs, no money from public funds and certainly no job handed to me unconditionally on a silver platter. Instead of trying to downplay people on the internet based on your perceived expectations about people you don't know, maybe you should get back to a rational debate about this movie and what I said.
Don't know why I didn't go and see this when it first came out. Very good film. Well deserved Oscar win for Linda Hunt excellent performance. Thank you for posting.
All the major companies like Warner, Paramount, Universal etc are going to start releasing their older films on TH-cam to make sure it keeps their copyright on them so i guess that's good for every one.
@@KasimirZierl I've worked with licensing media and its dependent on their copyright to keep renewing their ownership on them by continuing to monetize those properties. In the past they could do this by releasing on Home Media but TH-cam is just an easier option now which is why they're releasing all their back catalog now and keeping them all in one place rather than outsourcing them to different streaming sites.
I have not seen this for years. I had forgotten how great "Year" is, and was surprised again by the music that held me captive for a long time. Hunt, Weaver, Gibson and all of them were rivetingly good.
Half of the crew was Filipino ( actors are Filipino ) filmed in Philippines. Zero Indonesia involved except concept because they got bo permits to film under dictatorship
Would absolutely LOVE to get this film remastered by Warner Archive and have a proper blu-ray release. This brilliant Peter Weir film certainly deserves better. At least to be seen in it's proper aspect ratio - not just the opening titles.
The first official classic MGM film (especially Turner Entertainment) for a Full Movie upload for the first time on Warner Classics. Additionally, this film was also shot in Manila, Philippines, Southeast Asia.🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🎥
By far, the best Peter Weir's movie. Segourney Weaver and Mel Gibson are great but Linda Hunt is incredible. The way Historic events and individual destinies are mixed is very clever.
@cecildemille190 cecil...no one seems to be mentioning the author, or his book, here...surely must have something to do with the grip of the film! And the story's hero -- his casual disregard for the various serious civil topographys. As in, merely a year of danger...
Been years since i saw this film and still has a massive impact on my emotions. A fantastic film, great acting and direction and once seen never forgotten.
Fantastic movie. Being Australian love mel. I had a best friend at school from Indonesia. Given the year i guess they had to leave. Sad story. Thank you for sharing.
Ànother classic score by Jarre, anther great movie by Weir and another great performance by Gibson and especially by Hunt. Been a fan of hers ever since the 90s version of Dune. Thank you for uploading.
Despite the limitations, like was not being able to conduct the filming in Indonesia and had to do that in Philippines.. I think the producer of this film had done a great job at portraying Indonesia during 1960s. First, they got all the weapons & uniforms correct. Second, Linda Hunt, her acting as a dwarf chinese-Indonesian man is convincing.. at first I didn't even know the actor was woman (Linda Hunt).
@@randykarl4351 the opening scene is a play called wayang kulit and definitely Indonesia. But there were Filipino actors who appear in in the film too.
Had only been googling this movie yesterday, I was not sure if I was confusing it with the Killing Fields as I had just remembered a photographer trying to hide or smuggle film while the bad guys were heading towards a room he was in to either arrest or shoot him, I had thought it was Mel Gibson as the lead, so I had bits of the Killing Fields and bits of the year of living dangerously fused together in my old memories.
