If you think playing as a Mii in the story mode of Super Rush was anti-Mario enough, in Mario Golf 64, Mario wasn't even on the starting roster and you had to unlock five more characters before the chance to unlock *the title character.*

The electric ones are provided by the Lightning God stealing Wario and Waluigi’s energy once they got ahold of the Lightning Sword

I'll be honest, the jank looking animations were off-putting enough to be the reason I haven't bought Ender Lillies yet. But with a rave review like this it's definitely going on the wishlist.

Remember the same feeling. But got it after seeing the trailer in a few places. Ended up liking it a lot and got me playing a few other metroidvaina's.

I mean, the animation doesn't look THAT bad, if you want an example of how jank looks have a look at *Lost Epic* or *Vigil: The Longest Night*

Don't know why, might just be me, but it feels like Yahtzee really got some fire back lately. Like the videos feel fresher and sharper, it's great.
After hearing the praise for Salt and Sanctuary, I got the game and enjoyed it. Now he's got praise for Ender Lillies, I'll try and get that one too.
Aria of Sorrow was EXACTLY the game I thought of the first time you mentioned making spirits into weapons.

Ender Lilies is great, but my greatest issue wasn't the animation, it was with the way the maps connect with each other. Or rather, how they don't. I get its very castlevania-e, but the problem for me is when I'm climbing a house and popping through the roof and somehow ending up _forwards_ in a village rather than _up_ I just have a hard time connecting where I'm supposed to be in the world with where my character is going, and I have a poor sense of direction to begin with. I get that there's a map so on an abstract gameplay level it doesn't really matter how places connect with each other, but for me it certainly matters on an emotional level.
That said, everything else about the game is pretty good.
Boy, coming out of the elevator going up from the very top of Earthen Peak and stepping out into the Iron Keep built on top of a previously unseen volcano must have been disquieting to you...
I mean I always understood it as the protagonist's child-like worldview where things kinda sorta make sense but they're also very distorted when you look back at them.
OK, I wasn't really planning on getting Ender Lilies, but it getting a positive review from Yahtzee of all things is making me seriously reconsider.
Trust me dude I just played it and it really is spectacular. Almost perfect game
What Mario Golf is lacking in this installment is some shenanigans from Carl Spackler and a gopher that wreacks havoc on the courses.
Constantly perving over the lady golfers while cleaning your balls.
Cannonballing weed and wine with Chevy Chase.
Caddying for an unrepentant Bishop until his untimely death by lightning strike.

3:54 IIRC, the S&S Devs actually helped the Ender Lilies Devs with their game, just like they did with Vigil: Longest Night. The S&S have kinda made "2DarkSoulsies" their thing...
I love the end credits. After Mario hits the White Chocolate Girl, the next enemy she meets gets whazooed by Mario's spirit. Which implies that this sunshine and flowers White Choco Girl absolutely did a murder on the internationally famous plumber man. I LOVE THAT.

Okay, that whole first section with Mario Town sounds like an excellent idea for a whacky Indie game tackling the theme of large franchises having its ups and downs
Funny tid bit: in Dragon Age the Blight was represented on the map as a big wave of darkness.
Ender Lillies: what a pervy Enderman continually calls its victims during the police interrogations, to the frustration of its legal advisor.

Also it should be mentioned that the Ender Lilies OST is nothing short of fantastic if you are for some reason curious.
This is probably the first time I've ever picked up a game for no other reason than Yahtzee endorsed it. I'm quite enjoying Ender Lilies. And unlike Yahtzee I actually quite like the animation. Hopefully this will be what I needed to fill my Metroidvania itch until Dread and Silksong come out.

The RPG Marios are like a suburb that got abandonned and now there is always a new plan of restauration to burn all the crackhouses and be a respectable place again.

Love how, in the outro art, white girl is first hit by a golf ball, then we see Golf Mario snicker next to her, then next frame we see a generic evil dude with a knife approach her and final Golf Mario's ghost materializes to wack the little bugger of with his ethereal golf club...
It's so delightfully morbid in how you know immediately Lil' Girl had one of her Ghost Soldiers disembowel Golf Mario and then she took his soul as thrall. Perfectly exemplifies Yahtzee's final verdict of that Golf Mario game.
"Requiem for a Dream Pop-Up Book" Its just gonna be Mr. Mackey popping up for 50 pages saying "heroin is bad, m'kay" each time with a different angle on him.

Mario Golf SR could have been really good if Camelot committed to the RPG idea like they did in the Mario Tennis they made for the Game Boy Color. It had sidequests and bonus minigames and extra rackets and gear to find. This version is 100% painfully linear.

I love when people compare games favourably to Hollow Knight, because in doing so they affirm Hollow Knight's exemplary status and god knows the game deserves every ounce of praise it gets.

@@Skenjin The kickstarter looks really cool but I fear that they just took Hollow Knight and slapped a different look on top without coming up with too much stuff on their own but I mean if the games are basically the same, that's a bit disappointing but the game can still be good. It's like eating the same good meal twice. Maybe the second time around is boring but it will still be tasty.

@@vazazell5967Okay so I watched the trailer again and I think you are right. You have more different weapons, a dodge roll and something like the bash from Ori. I don't know how much the game will be different because of those things but I hope it will be something unique. When first watching the trailer, I thought those things wouldn't make much of a difference.
I'm only liking this for the excellent Ender Lillies review. I genuinely wanted Yahtzee to properly go through Mario Golf. It feels like he really phoned that one in and not enough to make me laugh like normal either. It's also kinda sad he didn't like the Speed Golf mode too or maybe it's just weird? Given how he railed about it being standard golf before that. Ah well, yay for Yahtzee using Moe xD

I dunno, Vanillaware does puppet animation actually and it always came out well. Though in their case, a lot of it is used in supplemental assets like spinning, transitioning different face angles, and LOTS of bulging boobs and muscles.
In the case of Vanillaware it's not just puppet animation. There is actually a fair amount of hand-drawn animation in there, it's especially the case in 13 sentinels. And yeah, lots of assets.
With that said, Ender Lillies look really good from what I've seen, the girl's movement doesn't look "puppet-like" at all. However, I guess the issue is more with enemies and bosses.
@@Knoloaify Yeah, it's more the enemies that have a more cutout puppet feel with the animation. Lily herself is actually well-animated and seems to have a good number of transitional frames for many of her moves. I think the only bit that looked stiff on her were the separate locks of hair.
@@geneMag but does she actually have transitional frames or those are mesch distortions?
@@vazazell5967 Not 100% sure if there's sprites that only exist between transitions, but I'm seeing a combination of sprite swapping and mesh distortion when switching between some actions (e.g. the leading foot facing inwards/towards the camera when standing vs foot completely to the side when running.) It's possible to do it purely by mesh deformation with just one sprite, but that'll require a lot of layering to execute.

Well its good he gave up on mario golf, i heard the cross country golf part was handled very poorly, prob be harsher on it if he got that far

A rather positive review from yahtzee, shortly after IronPineapple also positively reviewed that ender lilies thing. I will watch its career with great interest.
Summed it up nicely. I traded in Mario Golf: SR after about 8 hours of total play, bought Everybody's Golf instead and never looked back.
Does anyone remember a game launched recently that was praised and it was a roguelite RPG about walking around a square or something like that?
I think part of the gameplay was to choose the tiles for the character to walk into them and certain stuff would happen then.
Sorry for the horrible explanation, but I was curious about it a few months ago and I mostly forgot about it.

Ngl, the 2D skeleton tweening is in fact my biggest barrier to entry regarding Ender Lilies. Every time I look at the steam page I sort of have a mild aneurysm over the doll like joints and navigate away. Which is a shame because everything everyone's told me about it sounds awesome.

Yahtzee complains about Mario Golf having too much dialogues, story and custom characters, while here I am, waiting for them to copy the winning Mario Tennis: Power Tour formula and give us a real golf RPG to rival Golf Story, best golf game ever made.
