    Good initiative, however, the SOLUTION is to properly train police officers to do their job right. They are paid for it with OUR money. And when it comes to PO targeting specific groups we come to another level of the problem.

      If a citizen doesn't know their rights, it's pointless to spew about training police better. The MORE a citizen knows about their rights, the more cases the police can be held accountable and be FORCED to do better.
      The average person could barely give you a basic description of the canadian charter, why would we expect any better from the police when they are pulled from that very same average pool of people? The more emphasis we put on education about the charter in the classroom, the more likely everyone is to understand it, and as a consequence we will have more police that also understand it.

    "if you have no reason to hide your identity then it's okay to tell police who you are"
    There is always a reason to not identify yourself to the police. If they have no reason to ask who I am then they can piss off. Just because someone doesn't want to identify themselves to a stranger doesn't mean they've done anything wrong. This "if you have nothing to hide then just tell them" mentality is BS. Tell cops as little as you possibly can, nothing even.

      Do you think that the legislator set these rules to obstruct investigations or to stir up disagreement with the police? If you were an Aboriginal and have a chance of being killed by the police 6 times more than national average, you would feel that the unreasonable search is racially motivated to harass , put you down and oppress you. In normal case police would explain to you the reason for stop and ID without a need to ask them and remind them with your rights

      "what a thankless job they have"
      That's quite the oversimplification, eh. Policing isn't what it used to be either. Not long ago in Canada police couldn't expose the hand grip of their weapons much less remove them from the holster and point them at people for no just cause. We are following the American lead. Police have become increasingly militarized and act suppressively more than as a service to people. They are becoming more political as well.

      If they consistently worked in a professional manner and respected the rights of citizens that they are hired to serve and protect we wouldn't be in this situation where people need to do this .. abusing power as a police officer happens too often and unless that changes on a massive scale people will be skeptical around police. That being said I've had good interactions also with police and I'll give them the respect they deserve based on their interactions with me also

    • @shaggyfeng9110
      @shaggyfeng9110 ปีที่แล้ว

      Respect is overrated. Just pay better to hire better people, and make better rules for everyone. If people really want better servers, then everyone has to pay more $. However, policing is simply not a good professional choice. People who are nice and smart enough are not going to choose to deal with crimes and harms and all the worse things every day. The real challenge lies in securing practical ways for more people to stop any individuals from exploiting power.

The new act repeals the Ontario Police Services Act, 1990, and introduces the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 ². The new act allows for the suspension of police officers without pay for misconduct or unsatisfactory performance ². Additionally, the act introduces changes to police governance, oversight, and discipline, and provides for the establishment of a police complaints system ³
