This is a difficult song to understand without having some backstory. The point is that her music got sold from under her and she was not given a fair opportunity to buy it. She trusted and viewed the person who sold it as family. She wrote this song with the lyrical intent of portraying heroes and villains, and themes of betrayal, regrets, and ultimately the death of a relationship. The phrase that best represents her current struggles to own her music and her disappointment and anger towards the person who sold them is "and I still talk to you, When I'm screaming at the sky; and when you can't sleep at night, You hear my stolen lullabies"
I think my favorite part that no one has commented on is literally the line "my tears ricochet" because she's basically saying her tears turned into bullets that bounced and hit Scott instead or too.
“my tears ricochet” is about her record label and her masters or “stolen lullabies”. The chorus connects to each album that was stolen from her. at least that’s the way I see it, not sure if it’s been confirmed. “I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace” Red (“State of Grace”) “And you’re the hero out here saving face” Speak Now (“Superman”) “And if I’m dead to you why are you at the wake” rep (“Look What You Made Me Do”) “Cursing my name” Fearless (“The Way I Loved You”) “Wishing I stayed” 1989 (“All You Had to Do Was Stay”) “Look at how my tears ricochet” Debut (“Teardrops on my Guitar”)
Also, something to know about all Taylor's albums- the 5th track on every album is always the saddest, most painful, most vulnerable song for Taylor & this is a Track 5! If you watch her sing this live during the Long Pond Studio Sessions(you can find the individual song on YT) you'll see the pain & anger on her face...it's tough for her!
Something that can ricochet should be solid, like stones or bullets. Her tears (i think it’s a metaphor for her new songs/albums) ricochet because they are so strong. Taylor writes songs when she feels something. That’s why i think she is saying that now that she’s not with her old record label “look how far i can go while you did what you did”. Her jewels are her songs, the battleship will sink beneath the waves. With every new album (re-recordings) new waves of success will come and sink all of her old albums which helped her battle her exes/ennemies. That’s why they are battleships.
The song it self is so incredibly beautiful and her vocals are perfect but emotionally a bit painful to listen to. You hear the pain and anger in her voice because this song is so real for her. As said, it’s about betrayal and how although the owner of her former record label sold her masters (despite knowing she wanted to buy them) to Scooter Brawn, (a concert promoter and talent manager who got most of the $300 million from a few investment funds) a man who Taylor had never liked or trusted (this may have something to do with his apparent meddling in the relationship of Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber among other things). But the real theme is in the word ‘ricochet’. It refers to the pain she knows her former record company owner and close friend feels after he sold her out for money. Not realizing he was losing much more than he was gaining.
its kinda obvious this song is about her record label even tho she hasnt directly said it. she said this song is about how your best friend or the person you trusted most can become your worst enemy who knows how to hurt you because they were once your most trusted person
This is very hard to understand unless you follow Taylors career. Big Machine records signed Taylor when she first started and she was the first artist on the label. She built Big Machine records from the beginning and made the owner Scott Borchetta rich. He was controlling her music and refused to sell the rights to Taylor. After she signed with another label he sold all her music. She mentions in the song “and when you can’t sleep at night, do you hear my stolen lullabies” Scott Borchetta was like father to her and then betrayed her.
While this a really personal song to her as noted below, there are other way more general ways to interpret. Hopefully you never have to go thru this but I interpret this about a the breakup of a marriage or losing your best friend. The people who can hurt you the most are the one who used to know you the best. they know all your sensitive/sore spots and can make you bleed if that's what to want to do. In her long pond sessions, she says that the theme in most superhero movies are how the villain is usually the hero former best friend. That's hope they have all this drama (Professor X & Magneto, Superman & Lex Luther, etc)

Damn. Thanks for this comment. She’s a genius.

You should see her live performance from the Eras or Reputation tours. It's a whole different feel. And don't forget to invite us for your reaction.
A self written masterpiece
