Also important to recgonize that there is a negative (not immature) form of the King archetype. The Tyrant.

My understanding of "Warrior, King, Magician, Lover" is that what you call the Father archetype is found within the King and that it is, and the other three archetypes are, the four pillars of manhood, rather than it, the King, being the fulfillment of the other archetypes. It is good to see another take on the archetypes of manhood and how they all fit together. Thanks for given me something to think about.

My thought exactly. The word at the top of the pyramid should be a complete MAN, with the king replacing the father at the base.

      A father rules (King)
      A father protects (Warrior)
      A father guides (Magician)
      A father loves (Lover)

So a few points worth considering:
When you take the "King" archetype, it ultimately is the picture of a true father figure, the ultimate picture of and culmination of everything a man should be.
The magicians archetype is the area of mastery of skill. You could divide this into excellence in the skill itself and success with using that skill to make a secure living to provide. You could also say that it is part of the scale; that mastery of the skill is not to reach the level of magician until one can use that skill to provide for others and that it is this that serves as the gateway to becoming the king/father figure.
The lover archetype is similar in that being a romantic is only half of the picture. Sam in The Lord of the Rings was not a warrior or a magician but he was the ultimate picture of the lover even though there was nothing "romantic" about his love for his friend. The gateway for becoming more "kingly" for the lover is to be able to demonstrate that love and dedication throughout the journey even when things seem impossible but to do so gracefully and with wisdom.
The warrior must, likewise, not just simply charge forward for a cause larger than himself. It is through his through learning restraint and discretion that he gains wisdom which is the key to being more than a warrior but a king. A warrior knows how to fight and how to be bold but a king understands when and how to fight because he adds a magician's mastery and a lovers dedication to the warrior's ambition.
In short, a man must have skill and knowledge at what he does, dedication and passion for what is important to him, and the ambition and boldness to move it forward.

When added all together, it makes a man. When also applied to relationships, it makes not just a king but a father - which is greater than a king.

Amazing breakdown, it's very useful to see how all roads lead to the King. I never thought of Sam as the Lover but you're absolutely right! He's also a gardener and ends up being Mayor of the Shire.

I've been interested in masculine archetypes ever since becoming a Dad. Also, watching your video on Gladiator has helped a great deal. Thank you for that video.
Perhaps the part that spoke to me the most was the humility and devotion Maximus elicits to a higher power. And through this, I have come to the realization that those most worthy of emulation already exist within the Bible. For me in particular, St. Joseph the patriarch of the Holy Family. Arguably, there is no greater example of fatherhood and distilled masculine virtue, than the man deemed worthy of raising God's only begotten Son.
I understand for some this is a bitter pill to swallow. And that's ok. But know this, humility is deemed the number one virtue, and it is this virtue that strikes through all examples of the manly archetypes. A great book I recommend is 'Humility of Heart' by Fr. Cajetan Mary da Bergamo (currently in the process of being Canonized).
I have over the years found consistent trends in my mental patterns, negative thinking, recurring problems. Problems I have sort long and hard to find a solution. The only means I have found peace, is through removing sin in my life. By offering my good work to God, and learning about the epitome of virtuous conduct i.e. the lives of the saints. If you want to see a true shift in your life, offer it up to something greater than yourself and trust in Divine providence. Stop sinning, stop jacking it, stop doing stuff you know you shouldn't, and if you can't, ask that higher power for the Grace to overcome it. I promise you, you'll come to see the world through different eyes.
    Thank you for reading.

Good points. I like the vision of humility where one has the capacity for dominance and monstrosity, but then one controls it in the service of a higher ideal as you point out. "You have to be a man before you can be a gentleman."

The most useful thing to remember is that these archetypes are patterns of thought and behaviour seen throughout time. They are energies within all of us. The only way we can attain these balanced archetypes (king, warrior, magician, lover), we must become conscious of their shadows. Their dark sides when we are not conscious of what's going on within us.

That's a great video man. I really like your channel. I just think you left out an important piece of the wizard archetype. In my opinion equating it with a specialised knowledge is a huge simplification. To me it's about the innovative spirit, ability to see new possibilities in life and one's potential. The figure of a great scientist or an inventor comes into mind. Often a specialised knowledge in some area is a great tool to achieve that, but it may also be an ability to improvise, come up with completely new solutions to existing problems, or a kind of "street smart". Anyway, subscribed and keep up the good work man, Im waiting for a new video.

Leaders and Followers come to mind when thinking of other archetypes. There's the saying "you cannot be a good leader if you aren't a good follower". Leading is one of the biggest and arguably most important parts in being a man. Other examples of the father archetype could include Obi Wan Kenobi, and his relationship with Anakin in the Prequel Trilogy of Star Wars.

    • @ThomasGaryNuila
      @ThomasGaryNuila  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's a good thought on the leader/follower archetype because that definitely is a pattern you see repeated time and time again in stories. That also brings to mind the common trope of the leader with his faithful lieutenant like you see with Don Quixote/Sancho Panza, Frodo/Sam. I agree that being a leader is a core part of being a man, because there's fundamental ways every man can lead, such as in his own family. But you've got me thinking about the follower as well, and what should be said about the follower. The reality of the world is that many men are not capable of leading in many situations, and you can't have everyone be a leader all the time, because that would lead to chaos. The military is a great example of that. Even though it's not something many of us aspire to, there's something to be said about the virtue of being a follower when it's time to be a follower, but not letting that lead to just being a sheep either.

    • @belthoff444
      @belthoff444 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@ThomasGaryNuila I couldn't have said this better myself. I am currently enlisted so I hear about leadership all the time. Another good idea for a video would be going over the leadership principles and warrior ethos of each military branch, maybe some foriegn branches and historical ones (like the Roman Legions) as well.

I find the way you’re interpreting the archetypes, in a very objective sense (a technology, a tool). I started like that too, since I am a very practical person. It wasn’t until I start adding misticism (in a sense that there are many unknowns, and many unkowables) that the tool become something of a spiritual tool, and fulfilled my life much more. Just a thought. Thanks for your work, and sorry for all my typos, english is not my first language. Cheers.

The only note that needs to be made as I am currently reading king warrior magician lover is that .. the immature version of the king is actual the divine child. The one with all the potential to become king. The one destined for greatness . The immature version of the Warrior is in fact the hero where he makes his action about him and his coming of age adventure . The warrior fights the good fight and is more motivated by transpersonal motives. Somewhat altruistic and for the good of the people and the laws and order put in place by the King archetype. Loved the words you used though.

Their father tried to build or preserve useful things for the posterity, and all of them tried but failed. The sons are trying to revive their spirits by encarnating them in themselves. I don't agree at all that warriors put too much emphasis on the warrior archetype and overlook the lover (I perceive this as a much broader concept here) archetype. Take Col. Frank Slade (ret.) from the movie 'Scent of a Woman'. He is a lover, a father, a true warrior and shows all the qualities of a king. My own father is the same and he too is a retired army colonel. That Frank Slade character was spot on! Warriors suppress the lover within them, which makes the Lover their shadow archetype, strengthening it the longer they have to suppress it. Soldiers fight; true, but most of the soldiers I knew also love to mingle with the local people, help them out in times of need and take special pride in being the 'protectors' of the people. Not mindless machines of destruction. I served myself, and I know the mindset of a warrior all too well, although I deem myself to be an intellectual first. There were times I would literally give an arm and a leg for a good, righteous fight. Yet the reason for my service was to gain the traits of a warrior, knowing that I would put that experience into good use for the rest of my life, and for the benefit of those who would need me. That's the king for you and it is present in most men, if not all. A man who puts too much emphasis on one aspect of manhood is a rarity. An Isis terrorist would be a much better example for that rather than a Navy Seal. That's an extreme which is by definition, a rarity.

imo, the name change makes for a better generalization of the idea.
When we hear 'magician', we mostly think of the outward effect of the magic being cast, not so much about the intellect behind the magic. Re-labeling it as "wizard" emphasizes the intellectualism of the archetype, on account of the word being rooted in "wise".
The word "lover" also applies here. That word places too much emphasis on being attracted to another person. "Romantic" generalizes the idea further into someone who revels in the idea of Romanticism. Remember that Romanticism is not always about love and attraction.

god as a father. religion is inherently familial. That's what ancestor worship is about. Worshipping archetypes. We humankind worship different forms because there are many attributes that need single focus and the need to sacrifice others for the pursuit of this awakening not for it benefits us but because you see that there are rules and you respect the rules and accept consequences. You see how the situation works and you obey it. Discipline it and leave the rest and not get in the way.
mythical attributes are practical and deeply embedded in our psyche that you cannot help but speak of it and make use of it. Esoteric practices are eternal as well as malleable given the situation but the core remains the same and that makes it accesible. It's like cloud service. I don't know how to say it better. The archetypes are inherently mystical that It's so practical too see it in consumer videogames like mmorpg, moba ,tabletop games, movies that we never grew out of this.

I always firt thing: Oh, I will conter a few points and make a point.
Butn on the second thought I also always come to the conclusion that people who need to read books to become a "Manly Men!" or something like that, are simply so deeply insecure that it wouldn't be interessting in argueing with them about Rolemodels'n'Stuff.
Buuut ... You do know that the Film Version of Aragorn is a little bit "cuted", Tolkien was inspired by old nordics Myths and Aragorn was deeply troubled? + Vikings didn't differ much between Womans and Mens like we do nowadays. If you were strong enough, you could do whatever you want. o.ô'

Men who want to become better men are not "deeply insecure", they're humble enough to admit that they're not all that they could be. So youre wrong there.
Aragorn was deeply troubled, but eventually found himself and became King. Thats the point of his story and fits in with what i previously wrote. People must ultimately find themselves and strive to become King of their lives. That isnt possible with your attitude... Weak, insecure men who think they've got it all figured out, too scared to look inward and admit any flaws. Men who remain boys.
And yes, the Viking women did differ from the men. Woman are naturally smaller, weaker, less dense bones, slower, slower reaction times. and the list goes on. You can deny Biology if you want. But what does that have to do with being a man? Youre the one focusing on "strength" in terms of manhood. This video mentioned much more then strength my friend. Oh and women can do what ever they want in todays society as well mate, Look at athletics, look at the military. Women do what men do all over the place, but maybe you chose to ignore that.

@@CB-dl1vg First of all, naaah. You got Tolkien wrong. You forgot that even Womans fought in Lord of the Rings and by the way only a Woman could defeat the Witch King. It wasn't a matter of "Gender" - It was a matter of "Do things you've to do." like on the Fronts of the first and second World War. Do things you've to do. That's the simply Key in nearly everything - Do things when you've to do it: You've to speak before a big audience? Do it without fear or hesitation. You've to make a point? Do it without fear or hesitation.
The difficult thing is only to know *when* you've to do things.
Secondly nooo. Your great "BONES AND MUSCELS!"-Stuff is ... Well, it displays your insecurity nothing more.
One of the most real Viking Leaders was by the way Woman, they led her Troops into Battle ;) So yeah, if you were strong enough (And Raiding isn't all about body strengths, because you need also the mentality and also the wits to do it successfully) you could go. We talk about a more naturalistic Society. Even if you weren't away raiding others, you've to keep your House / Stuff in order and in consideration that the most Households had also a few Slaves you should be able to count one and one together and to accept the simply fact that "Viking-Womans" would probaly be "more manly" than most of the "Mens" which buy and read Books about "Manly Behaviour" ;D
PS: Your "Argumentum ad hominem" didn't worked, sorry.
If you would wanna improve yourself, you would read stuff targeted at "Becoming a better Human" like Nietzsche's Antichrist, Thus Spoke Zarathustra or the Gorin no Sho from Musashi (Personal favorits). Maybe also Clausewitz's "Vom Kriege" oder the Sun Tzu if you wanna have a more tactical approach.
But if you really have to figure out how you could become the "King of your own life" - Well, things like that should be already be clear for you. Because, you're simply the King of your own fucking life, or aren't you already mature enough? o.O
I mean, hell - You're a grown as Human being. Don't be a fucking sheep which follows simply consumerism - You'll only end in a empty road filled buy the stuff you bought yesterday =o
