About 300 Thais were airlifted from the beleaguered Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh Tuesday after taking shelter for three days during a bloody coup.
Three C-130 military transport planes began the rescue mission despite reports that the Phnom Penh airport had been damaged in fighting over the weekend.
The planes flew to Phnom Penh's battered airport earlier on Tuesday.
The airport is still closed to regular domestic and international flights.
Fears of security risks from shelling and looters meant the operation was carried out at full speed - no sooner had the planes landed than Thai nationals were rushed on board.
The planes took off as soon as the last person was inside and the hatch closed.
Hundreds of Thai nationals waited at the Hotel Royal Phnom Penh.
The Thai embassy then ferried as many as possible to the airport in a security convoy.
Thai Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh spoke with Cambodian coup leader Hun Sen and secured a guarantee for the safety of the airplanes during the evacuation, a Thai military spokesman said.
Those who alighted from the first plane were seen wearing yellow ribbons on their wrists as identification tags.
The stress was taking its toll on them.

The aircraft were scheduled to make another round of flights Tuesday to bring out the remaining 400 Thais in Cambodia.
Although Thai officials say their first priority is to rescue all Thai nationals who want to leave Cambodia, they said they will consider additional flights to help other foreigners stranded in Phnom Penh.
