    I was a 20 year old Plankowner serving aboard her when these scenes were recorded. Found this video by accident while scrolling in TH-cam and am REALLY glad I did. Nostalgia galore!!! Thanks.

    Superb footage. Great to see the often overlooked AJ Savages, and the FJ3's look snazzy with their nuclear paint jobs.

    I believe this to be filmed during FORRESTAL's Shake Down Cruise which took place 24 January to 31 March 1956 in the Guantanamo Bay Operating area.

      The Navy never subsequently adopted tailless fighter aircraft. There were problems with the Gutless aside from the lack of power.

    That could be included, we took the title off of many of the tests showing CV59, the Forrestal. Thank for the info on Feightner, he is interesting!

    Banshees make the ship seem not excessively large.
    The Cutlass Was a spacey-lookin' bird 💜.
    As a kid, had a model of this ship; playing w/ it showed that portside elevator was in the wrong place: Maybe they should make mockups of new designs & let the designers' kids play w/ them to cook out the flaws, like maybe there's a chance the Ford's island could be moved 2 the portside aft corner, removing turbulence from the approach entirely.
    Absolutely love this video 💜.

    AJ (A-2) Savages heavy bombers, used primarily in the nuke role (later tanker and recon). Used in the interim as the Navy's only long range nuclear strike aircraft, the PV-2 Neptune (which later served as a patrol, recon, and special mission aircraft), could take off but not land on a carrier. The savages were replaced by A-3s and A-5s.

    • @hertzair1186

      The Savages were unique in that they were a hybrid of piston and jet… two piston engines on the wings and a single jet in the tail…

    Waiting to see the A3-D Skywarrior (or it's predecessor) tricked out for carrying nukes, c. 1950s, as ordered by AF (as the B-66, I think). By the time we had them in the 60s (KA-3Bs, or Whales), they were mostly converted as tankers, c. 1967, 68, at least while I was aboard the Bonnie Dick, later the Tico. Have my own color S8 films of the Forrestal on fire, in July 1967, while then aboard the Bonnie, with VAH-4, Det. Lima. But of these FJ-3s, well, never saw them out there, or elsewhere, even at NAS Jacksonville, while then being trained on A\C electrical systems, and which we worked on (or tried to destroy) at the time the more common F-9 Panthers, as seen here (I think). What the hell, they looked like these, anyway, all Navy blue, waxed and shined even, and then we just ripped apart their wiring harnesses to troubleshoot problems, including by the likes of me -- just so we could get later out there in the Gulf and try destroying Vietnam. And to think, all that just to save her from the awful Commies (?), and I might add, the same ones we now buy our stuff from at Walmart. What a f****g waste of lives, planes and country back then. Good grief. Will we ever learn?

    • @louissimons7787
      @louissimons7787 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The A-3's were not "tricked out" to carry nukes, except for the reflective paint on the bottom. That capability lasted about a decade but in '64 we started dropping 2000 #ers over SE Asia.

    Back in '62the Forrestal was docked at Alameda,our dad took us out for a tour of the ship.It turned out the Forrestal was off limits tied next to the Ranger the inboard ship.While we went thru the Ranger when we went up the elevator the deck of the Forrestal was full of F-102s'.Well we were Air Force brats and knew the didn't belong on a ship and asked the sailor and my dad"why were they there". both just kept their mouths shut and suggested we forget what we saw.Well we found out years later the answer.
