I was 13 years old and stood among thousands of school children, shoulder to shoulder to pay tribute to Hannie Schaft, a Dutch resistance fighter, who with 300 other men had been murdered by the Nazis in the dunes of Holland close to where I lived. She was the only woman. Never has one song made such an impact on me, the drums were clad in black cloth, the men playing the instruments looked down. I went to visit the original grave site 2 years ago and the memories came back. May she ever rest in peace.

It's too bad what happened to her, but since she was a communist I wonder what she and the other communists would have done if Hitler hadn't invaded the Soviet Union. I say that because most of the French resistance groups (the communist ones) didn't resist until that point. More importantly: I also wonder what she would have done in the event of a home-grown communist revolution in the Netherlands (such as had been attempted in Germany).

It is an absolute shame that they didnt use the bridge cadence 1:20 again for the Queens funeral, they just did 8 quarter notes on the basses to lead into the next march. The snares and tenors playing the cadence in this adds alot of character and is basically almost the only time they play in the whole parade, lol

Absolutely agree, also quite a haunting sound with the snares turned off and the rhythm echoing around the buildings. A shame this wasn't used indeed!

In the old days masses of people lined the streets and when the funeral carriage passed everyone removed their hats and stood silently with their heads bowed. people did not simply cheer and clap, their was a stiff silence and the only sound was the band and the horses hooves and the wheels of the carriage.

Normally no; in the West you are supposed to be silent when a coffin is passing by along with removing hats. But this woman almost destroyed the British economy and was overall a terrible Prime Minister. As a result, the British don't think fondly of her and were even happy when she died. The clapping is a sign that people cheered her death.
In contrast if you saw the spectators of Queen Elizabeth's funeral procession, people for the most part were silent because she was loved by them.

@@katerinakemp5701 No, the RM bands are simply classified as a military band. The term windband is rarely used in the UK, even less so for the military, especially since the RMBS does not utilise that many instruments for parade gigs like some army bands do (no bassons or oboes on parade gigs like the foot guards bands). Same for some newly reformed army bands that do not utilise any woodwind instruments at all (e.g. BABs Tidworth, Catterick). I was a bugler in the RM for six years until 2020, and the bandies did utilise more instruments for concert gigs of course, but that's a different story.
