    Hey Everyone! All information that I give in this video is from my perspective as an Air Force Officer. I eagerly admit my ignorance of life and operations in the other branches and I encourage you to seek out members from those services to learn more about them and how they differ from the experience that I give in this video.

    I never really concerned myself by the whole officer enlisted rules. In 26 years as an officer working with enlisted folks, I never had an issue. In fact it was my joy to interact and spend off duty time with them. As a pilot, my crew were equals both officers and enlisted. I can remember my last redeployment from the ME. We landed in Greece and I said I was paying for the first round for all the great maintainers traveling aboard. We had a great afternoon sharing stories. Was I ever fearful, no. These were the guys and gals that allowed us to be successful. It was my pleasure to work and lead them to success.

    As a senior enlisted in the Navy with close to 2 decades in Active Duty service and served in 2 joint commands with all services working for and with me, this video information is highly tailored coming from an Air Force perspective. I understand that is your speciality but do not misinform viewers that the same generalities applies to all services. I promise that e-mails and desk jobs are not what officers and senior enlisted Navy personnel do all day while deployed on a warship; speaking from firsthand experience. Constructive criticism because we work to do better so don’t take it personal. Great videos on your channel and a long time viewer so keep em coming and we’ll keep watching.

      Absolutely! Full disclosure, I know very little about daily life in the other branches. I do my best to generalize my information here on TH-cam to reach the widest audience possible, but all of my information is biased as it is coming from an Air Force Officer. Even within the Air Force, the world of ICBMs is much different than the rest of the Air Force. I appreciate people from other branches leaving comments for those looking for more information. Hey Jake, I'm currently at the end of my third year in Korea, second in the GOE. I appreciated finding your channel considering we have similar backgrounds and interests. I teach at a technical high school. We teach agriculture, mechanics, CNC machining, etc. Basically our school funnels the least well performing middle school students into our program and teaches them technical skills, which is great. It has a good mission, but I couldn't be less excited as an English teacher here and so I'm now considering joining the Air Force assuming I score well enough on the AFOQT. I'd very much like to become a pilot. However it feels a little intimidating coming from a school like mine where the expectations aren't high, students are allowed to sleep and use phones in class and then go from that to OTS and to a pilot. I feel like I'm suffering here at this school personally and professionally as there is very little challenge and too few students who have any interest in what I'm paid to do here.
    Do you feel like teaching ESL was at all advantageous to you going forward in your career in the Air Force or in your interview? I'd like to do well during my interview as well though I feel like my resume is going to be a bit more barren than yours though I also have experience working on my school's newspaper as an editor. I have been studying Korean since I came here three years ago, and I'd say I'm relatively proficient--enough to speak about day to day topics with my friends and girlfriend. I'm curious what you felt helped you the most in your interview or application. Obviously you had quite a strong package all together.
    Thanks for your videos and time!

      Hey Joshua! I taught in a public Korean elementary school for six years. Singing days of the week and helping 5th graders with counting ordinal numbers did nothing to prepare me to be an Air Force officer. But that doesn't matter. Moving to the other side of the world to immerse yourself in another language and culture takes guts. Something a lot of Americans would never be willing to do.
      If you want to be an Air Force officer you have to believe in yourself. You have to be your biggest fan and you have to sell yourself if you want the Air Force to invest in you. If you do not think you are great right now, then change that. Volunteer to do stuff. Seek out opportunities. Build your resume now. Prove that you are mentally and physically capable of succeeding as a pilot. Nothing is easy, but the people who made it all have one thing in comment, they tried and did not give up on the process or the goal of self-improvement. I have two videos coming next week about applying to OTS. Be sure to check those out!

    • @joshuac2594
      @joshuac2594 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JakeBroe thanks Jake! I think I just felt a little disheartened, but I think you're right. Part of selling oneself is just the confidence in knowing you can deal with challenges, and I know I can do that, but I'm also coming at this from an area I was raised in where going into the military is not exactly a positive thing haha so I probably have some inner doubts I need to eliminate. It is definitely something I want. I'll keep a lookout for your next videos and further opportunities to strengthen my resume. I appreciate your encouragement!

    I'll respectfully disagree on the promotion. 😀 The promotion rate to O-4 has been 100%, O-5 normally above 50%. The rates are significantly lower for E-6/7. We always made jokes about Os and most prior Es would agree. Have pulse, will promote! LOL. In my 27 years, I only met one person who couldn't make 0-4/5 and she was sleeping with an E. LoL I do agree with the politics. I've had many Lts and Capts ask me to attend a meeting with them because they knew I would say what needed to be said and the WG/CC would likely agree with me. I would tell my MOO all the time I'm not here to play politics, I'm there to make the mission happen. E8/9 were given lots of latitude, that's why it takes a 4-star to demote . They want you to have the ability to say what needs to be said in order to protect your enlisted Airmen. Overall good video, but tough one to make. Personally, I think you gave too much credit to the officer influence on enlisted EPRs, Decorations, and assignments. They play a very small role, with the exception of final approval. Most of the time they will always concur if their Chief does. But, you're an O in a world where there's very few enlisted so I understand why you think that way. I also believe your view from the ICBM world is very different from how the rest of the AF operates. And it should, entirely different mission.

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Rob! For sure, everything varies from branch to branch and career field to career field. I have met good senior Captains that wanted to stay in and failed to promote to Major (black marked for fucking up as a Lt 8 years earlier). I also know Majors who failed to make Lt Col and they are being pushed out right now. Most officers who suck at leading people and making decisions just eliminate themselves and get out because the job is so uncomfortable for them. Nobody at age 18 can really know that this is what they want for themselves when they agree to do ROTC or the Academy.
      You are also correct that the world of missiles is very different from the rest of the Air Force. I am in an ops squadron right now with 60 other officers. I am 5 years in to my service and have never been directly responsible or in charge of anyone other than a single deputy Lt. My job is to pull alert and be in the missile field. I work with enlisted people, but I am not directly in charge of them. That will change eventually of course! Cheers!

    • @roburb73
      @roburb73 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jake! I think the promotions work very differently in the ICBM world, fingers on the trigger so no time to "rehabilitate".
      It's just not that common for Os to separate due to not being promoted in the AF, overall.
      I've said for years, Aircraft Maintenance Officers are more equipped to lead large orgs. A brand new 2Lt arrives and their first position is a Flight Commander in-charge of more than 100 airmen. That's probably the smallest number they'll ever lead. They do this with the assistance of a strong MSgt/SMSgt by their side.
      I think it's difficult for any officer to give their opinion on the inner workings of the enlisted force. You would think they do, but they really know nothing about it. I've talked to many full birds who truly had no clue how our assignment system works, promotion system works, etc. That's not being disrespectful, just a fact. That's why they have Chiefs. That's what I've been told many times. I have you for that, Chief. 🤣🤣🤣

    Officer or enlisted? Enlisted USMC delayed entry with two other high school buddies and we were on the yellow MCRD San Diego dark thirty June 2, 1980. Near the end of "acclimation" I was called to the table of brass for the offer of OTC - a day or so before Drill Instructors picked us up.
    Said brass made the offer explaining only a vague timeline of events and length of tour, to a stupid seventeen y/o small town kid who didn't know what the heck he'd gotten himself into. Not one peep about actual duties (I originally wanted Force Recon) so I respectfully declined. My Major mistake on several fronts. The brass was offended by the declination.
    Had I understood what was included in officer training, I might have flown Cobra choppers or made Recon elements. Could have retired with rank (even if only time in grade) and full pension at 45 y/o. At the same time I did learn as enlisted, hands on skills that have proven quite valuable, not overwhelmingly cash profitable.
    In retrospect, I should have taken OTC. BTW, Marine Corps OTC is (or was ) in no way connected to ROTC. Different critters. eom

Additionally, for O-4s who don't make O-5, many go guard or reserve to get 20 good years and they still will collect the pension, they just have to wait until age 60 to start it. There are also other government agencies that count military years towards their pension, so there are lots of options in this scenario.

      I am in the process now and awaiting school. I would be part time, but I may want to go full time in my Officer position one day (I’m almost 100% that’s what I wanna do).

    Would it be possible not to have a STEM degree and still be able to commission as a non-prior officer?

      Of course! I think most who do go through OTS do not have STEM degrees. STEM applicants are rare, which is why the Air Force likes them. But have a non-STEM degree still qualifies you to apply for sure!

    As an Active duty potato with 10,000 years of service, the military does more than just waste the tax payers money, we also excel at sexual assaults, racial discrimination, and domestic violence. We also treat our enlisted like goats. Semper pie 💪🏽
