Eastern Phoebe is way too friendly.

- We have an Eastern Phoebe that has been around for a couple of years. Recently she has decided that it's ok to start landing on our hands and heads while she looks for bugs to eat. Her name is Penelope Casserole and she definitely has boundary issues for being a wild bird.

Penelope Casserole may be a bully, but its definitely a privilege not every can experience, you are a truly lucky man:)
I have not seen her yet this year, but feel really lucky to have gotten to know her for a few months.

My dad and I have had an eastern phoebe that has been within a couple of feet of us if not right on one of our shoulders for the last 3 or 4 days. We have been digging a trench across my dad's yard to bury his cable tv line and the little guy has been eating grub worms from the soil we have been digging so I thought I'd try holding one in my hand to see if he would take it and sure enough, with the most impressive accuracy he would take them right from my hand. One after another after another, and I don't think I ever felt him actually touch my hand when he would come take them. So precise! We spent 6 hours each of the last 2-3 days outside working and he was never gone for more than a few minutes at a time. He's quickly become our new buddy.
That is so cool! This one does the same thing with meal worms. Their eyesight and coordination is pretty impressive. Thank you for sharing your story.
We have an eastern phoebe who befriended us in the same way a little over a year ago. She watches everything we do in our backyard, usually within a distance close enough to reach out and touch her. Whether we are gardening or just sitting on the patio reading, Phoebe appears and hangs out with us. She has sat on us many, many times. Last March she took colored threads from my hand and flew off with them, so I knew she must be building a nest. Over the spring & summer months we saw very little of her and when we did see her she didn't stop to socialize. We're sure she raised at least 2 families, based on the young who showed up at our dried mealworm tray for a few weeks. But in September when her mothering duties were over, she began visiting daily again. She seems to want nothing from us except friendship. It's a remarkable experience to be chosen by a wild bird for friendship.

My husband and I recently have been visited by a friendly phoebe in our backyard. 2 weeks ago, this bird was following my husband around outside and we thought it was a freak, one time occurrence. Well today, the bird came onto my lawnmower after I had finished mowing the back yard. And kept flying around me like the bird wanted to land on me. These birds are so special!! It truly warms my heart that this has happened on more than one occasion with other people. I love these cute birds. 🥰😍
I'm so happy that you got to experience this! We think some of their friendliness comes from the bugs we stir up on our walks. It might be the same with y'alls mowing. Their vision is sharp. If you put some meal worms in your hand, I'm sure they will come right over.

I've got an eastern phoebe that's taken a liking to me as well. The only thing I can figure out with the eye situation is maybe it sees our lashes as a bug?!

I wrote about my little friend over a month before. Since than my pal (I’ve named her Phoebe) comes to visit almost everyday. I go in my backyard and she comes to me. Some days she is particularly aggressive and gets a few pokes in, I wear protective glasses that she has scratched up. We are best friends now. I love the company. It’s quite special.
Yeah! Unbelievably friendly birds. One was playing with my hands while i was trimming my bonsai trees in the backyard a few years ago. Every one that I’ve seen has been comfortable with my presence, but I guess every now and then, one is just a social butterfly.
So, I got poked in the eye yesterday. It didn’t feel good. Before it got me she landed on me too. We had been visiting for a good ten minutes. Very bold little EP. It was quite an amazing encounter. If she comes back, I’ll wear protective eyewear. Good idea.

Yours is even more friendly than mine! I have a black phoebe who is my friend. I started feeding him mealworms soaked in ice water. I carry the worms with me to work in a pocket size glass jar and feed him regularly. Whenever I walk outside, he sees me and gets all excited, flies right up to me and chips. I feed him in the same spot all the time, and if I change the location of where I feed him, often times he doesn’t see it.
I love hearing this. I never realized how social this species was until I posted on TH-cam. I would love to see a video of yours if you get the opportunity.
Sorry, but that is just too darn cute! We had a Black Phoebe last year that would fly up to our fence and catch tossed mealworms on the fly, but not near as friendly as yours!

I'm searching around about Eastern Phoebe because one of them comes close to me and watching me to picking weeds.
I thought she wanted earthworm around me but no, she just watching 30 inches away from me.
But she never let me touch nor perch me.
When I don't notice her, she swishes her wing and force herself past beside me.
She is like, "Hey! I'm here!"
I'm so happy to see her.
I am so thrilled to hear all of these stories about friendly Phoebes. I bet she is hoping you flush out a meal for her when you are weeding. If you have access to a store with fish bait, you can get meal worms to feed her. I just put a few out on a little dish and she flies over to get them.
@@thesparklefarm Oh yes, I bought dried meal worms for her. Also I dug lots of earthworms for her but she didn't eat until today. She finally ate some crunchy meal worms.
I put a small shelf on the wall at my poach. If she likes it, maybe she will make a nest on it someday. lol
When it heavy storm or very cold night, I'm worry about her.

The Say's Phoebe that perches on the highest part of the roof of the appt building next door does a call for 20 minutes straight every evening around dusk.... since I've been using the Merlin App to call her in...she has yet to land....but hovers over me and almost did today...it's only the 3 rd day...and she came in this evening without the call...they just must be a really curious species of fly catchers..

I was looking for their call and stumbled on this video too. The eye thing....I will say my chickens want to peck my eyes out too because they think the pupil is a bug

Thanks for sharing. I just had the same experience right down to Phoebe going for my eyes! The Phoebe showed up when I started cleaning up leaves, grabbing every bug/worm, and eventually perching on me for the best view I suppose.
I love hearing all of these similar stories. Such a fascinating species. I have not seen her in quite some time, but there are a lot of other Phoebes around. Maybe it will happen again one day.

Just brought this video up, and my dog (a Norwegian Elkhound) looked up with a start and eventually began barking at the computer as the bird continued.
They eat all the things that piss me off. I love those birds. They’ve been nesting under my deck since I moved in the house 14 years ago. Two broods a year. Sometimes three if the weather’s right. Many chicks have hatched during that time. I’m actually waiting til the fall to redo the deck. Can’t disturb my buddies

If they're like chickens they're attracted to the glint of the shining eyeball and will peck it thinking it's a flash of a bug.

I thought I was the only one!! I have made a habit to take zoom calls outside and this eastern phoebe will sit on me and she’s tried to get my eyes several times. Because I wear glasses and she can’t perch on my glasses she has to fly up and peck near my eyebrow. I don’t feed the bird, I’m not sure why she likes to be around me.
That is really cool. I have been hearing from more and more folks about how socialized with humans this species can be. I am still baffled by their infatuation with the eyes. We do have "eye gnats" around here that are constantly trying to get at the moisture on our faces, but they never seem to be around when the Phoebe is.

Thank you, eyes are a-ok. Unfortunately though, we have not seen Miss Phoebe this year. Some hang around all year, but I sincerely hope she went south last winter. We lost a lot of bird friends during the big freeze.

Her eggs just hatched about a week ago how long do they stay with their offspring
@@crystalfrancis5977 The hatchlings stay in the nest approx 15-17 days. After they fledge (leave the nest) they will continue to depend on their parents for food & remain near by for at least 1-2 wks. But many remain in the vicinity, just not directly around the nest, for much longer. Unless you’re in the Southern US, they will migrate south late Sept-October & then return sometime in March.

My daughter has two mini horses and dogs, and whenever she let's the dogs out , a pair of these birds have a fit. We fi all figured out they are pheopbes! They make such a racket so we're sure they laid eggs in the old Robin's nest on her porch.
They can be so assertive. Sometimes they remind me of how mockingbirds act.
Amazing I love bp's, in socal they are playful but I've never seen them just come land on someone, your lucky, see if she will go home with you😊

I came across your video because I am having the same experience, I was trying to find out if my bird is a Pine Warbler or a Eastern Phoebe. The bird has been hanging out at my art studio (garage) for about a year, We live in East Cobb Georgia and I find the bird connection so magical!

I've had one hanging out with me as I was digging garden beds for about six weeks, hopping down and eating bugs. Today it landed on me over and over (and tried to eat my freckles and eyes) as I was transplanting things.
It looks they are not shy about taking advantage of bug opportunities. I have suspected that was what Phoebe was up to all along.

Some say that our loved ones from the other side send us birds or visit as birds. I had a black phoebe coming to my porch for months then stopped suddenly. I miss him and hope he comes back.

Yes! When my beloved father passed away in 2008 I was living in a cruddy apartment. He died in mn, I was living in ca. A week later I was looking at my balcony and out of the blue, the most beautiful hawk landed on my balcony rail.
It stared at me for 5 mns. I burst into tears. My father LOVED nature! I truly believe it was my dad!
And even though I moved that year, he has come to see me 3 more times!

Ok I don't believe in birds visiting as humans but then who knows! I mentioned in a reply to this video about my encounter a month ago with a lone eastern phoebe (never noticed one ever before). Ok it must surely be the container of mealworms I started putting ouside when it started appearing - but it also started appearing right after my father died the day before Thanksgiving. The thought that could be my father "visiting" me as a bird, even though highly unlikely, makes me feel really happy! Such a neat thought.
Funny you mention this; when my grandfather (who loved birds and taught me all about them) passed away, a Carolina Wren began roosting under the eave of our porch each night. That was in 2002, and though it doesn’t happen every night, and we go long stretches without one, we still have one come to roost on occasion. Cute little ball of fluff ❤️
For a few days now ive noticed there's a couple of eastern pheobes that chill on a tree outside my attic window. They also have a nest right above the window! I started talking (and whistling) to them, and now every time I go to the attic, they come by and make the same noise Penelope does in this video! I can't tell if they're trying to be friends with me or not. Every once in a while one of them will start flying towards me, hovers for just a second, Then changes its mind and flies away. I've been putting a handful of dry mealworms and a bowl of water on the windowsill every day. Unfortunately, they don't seem interested, as when I go to the attic to check on the mealworms, it seems like nothing touches them. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but they're lovely to watch and talk to :)

I found an Eastern Phoebe on my gate one afternoon after work. It didn't move as I pulled into the driveway, or as I opened the gate. I moved in face to face with it and offered my finger as a perch, but it flew away, maybe not ready for that yet.

This is amazing! I thought I was the only one. I had been putting out a container of dried mealworms for wrens and a lone Eastern Phoebe started hanging out a month ago every day, all day long (it is January and cold weather here in Virginia). Never saw one before and took me a while to identify it. Always checking out whether I fill the mealworm container and complaining if I let it get low. It is super friendly and not afraid but you's takes the cake - flying on you. think your phoebe likes the vantage point of sitting high up on you to catch insects but why so much less afraid of humans than other birds. The only other super friendly bird I have encountered like this was last year's Red Breasted Nuthatches (it was an irruptive migration year for them and it was the first they ever showed up in Virginia).

Unfortunately, she has not been around for a couple of years now. Some of the other phoebes are kinda friendly, but not the way she was.

She's probably got a nest nearby and maybe went to feed some babies?
Maybe the bird wants to get your eyelashes? They eat caterpillars and spiders and lashes might look leggy to a Phoebe. Who knows!

She started following us on our walks and jogs because we would stir up bugs in our path. Then she started following the tractor. I think L's comment below is onto something. She was mistaking our eyeballs for bugs. I don't think it was as much of a trust thing as it was an opportunity for her to get a good meal, especially after we started giving her meal worms.

You're too close to their nest.
I thought that maybe that might be the case as well, but she would land on other visitors and neighbors within a 300 yard radius. Her favorite game was to wait patiently on a low limb until we walked by and scared up a bug for her to swoop down and eat. We had a bad freeze in February and I have not seen her yet this year. I hope she made it.
@Piranha hound Yoo This is very good information. Thank you for sharing. I have not seen her in the winter and I'm happy to hear she is probably enjoying warmer pastures. Hopefully she will pay us a visit again this year.
He’s not too close to their nest. You shouldn’t make statements about things you don’t know about.
