also worth to note to any one that thinks they may add upgraded cam shafts to their k20, if you replace this part MAKE SURE you get an aftermarket one EG Hybrid racing. This is because the stock tensioner is KNOWN TO FAIL if you upgrade the cams, the extra tension added to the Exhaust side (the side the tensioner is on) causes the gears/teeth inside the tensioner to skip
Keep us posted whether or not this fixed that awful cold start rattle these k series engines have. Thanks for taking the time to record and explain the process bro
Thank you so much for sharing this stuff with us, I know it's a real pain trying to film and make stuff happen at the same time. Not a job I would be willing to do at home. Huge respect!
Thanks for posting this. I have a 2007 Honda Civic with 1.8L that I needed to change the tensioner on and, although it's not the same engine, your video was helpful.
Nice video bro. Question? Do really have to take the head cover off and put the engine top dead center?? Or can you just do it with the counterclockwise turn till the tensioner is released of pressure?
Man, I just did this on my RSX-S and now I'm getting a p0341. It was a pain getting the pin in mine for some reason and even worse getting the tensioner out. Going to pull the valve cover off tomorrow, I'm praying one of the cams if just off by a tooth or something and I can just pop it back and good to go. On the bright side the engine was much quieter when I started it, lol.
sorry to ask, i know that it doesnt really is about the subject of the video, but on the hondata mobile app you can change between maps or that only can be done on the actual hondata ? thank you so much for your content, always helpful !

Question how did you make the tension tighter without taking the side cover off I’m doing this on my ep3 but can’t figure out how to make my tensior tighter without removing everything
gerb you my man. telling you my si was an absolute machine before i got tboned at an intersection. i ran nothing but mobil 1 with a lucas additive every other change. one time i didn’t have access to mobil and i put castrol in and it didn’t feel the same. was more noisy. immediately switched to mobil . it’s a great oil i promise
I was running mobil1 for awhile... my car seemed to be the fastest with it, but since it burned up relatively quickly, I switched to Castrol or Honda oil. I love them both 🤙🏼
great video , i still heard the rattle noise when you started the car. my fg2 does the same thing would you recommend doing just doing the tensioner do you think the chain would need to be replaced if that noise is still present?
Yup, she is still rattling away lol. I picked up a starter, plan on changing that out this weekend. It could be numerous things man, tensioner, vtc, starter, chain slack, etc. I suggest start with the cheapest and work from there. How many miles are on your car?
Thanks for making the only video on TH-cam on this topic! I am planning to do it on Honda Accord Hybrid 2017. It looks like that the engine moves counterclockwise. Do you suggest to rotate it 10-12 times after I have replaced the tensioner?
@@TheGerbsteve thank you! Can I just keep the tension on the tensioner using a screwdriver? The manual doesn’t include any information on removing the cover.
My SI is rounding 225k. It makes a rattle but only under low rpm, high load. Very noticable and nerve racking lol. Been doing that for a few years but slowly gets louder. When I do an oil change it goes away for a little and I have started adding an extra QT of 20-50W race oil to help keep pressure up. Im guessing its the tensioner.
My 08 fg2 has been doing it for 2 years now lol, I'm stuck on whether to get a new engine or just spend $900-$1200 on a new vtc gear, chain, guides, & tentioner🤦🏼♂️
Good informative video for anyone that needs to do a timing chain tensioner but unfortunately the noise was/is the VTC actuator/intake cam gear you should get that along with the rest of the needed timing components and get it done asap. Maybe get a set of cams & springs/retainers while you're at it and make some more power.
I have a 2012 Si sedan, just bought a Skunk 2 CAI and hondata is on the way. Any recommendations for big gains without too. Big of a noise difference, im looking a the Rv6 downpipe. I love how she sounds with the new intake!
Yes. This inspection and tensioner video should be the same for the majority of k series engines. The 04 tsx K24a2 is very similar to this k20z3 engine. Both are dohc with performance I vtec camshafts on Intake + exhaust.
I hope you went with the Invidia Q300. I got rid of my Ktuned one and I am in love with it. By far the quietest aftermarket exhaust out there but damn does it sound good.
Is this something I should do if I buy one of these? I heard the timing chain can fail/slip off and wreck the motor. I'm planning to buy one with 140k on the odometer.
Another great video bro, glad to see you aproaching that 10k sub mark💪🤙 mines has that same rattle as yours and it's only got 116k on her. Looking forward to finding out what it is.

How were you able to fish the old tensioner without messing the timing? I messed my timing before when I tried it. Had to reset the timing which was a pain!
I was, but it was very tough for me to get the old one out. I thought for sure the chain slipped off a few times, but thanks to my cousin, he was my top set of eyes. He supported chain + guide from top. You have to take the chain off to reset, damnnn?
Gerb Productions I called help cause I already panicked lol. We took out one of the cams and adjust from there. In hindsight, i should have place it back to tdc, lock the cams from behind and fished the tensioner. In this way I ensure that the timing doesn’t move.
Engine Rattles, idle issues, check engine light. I was having a weird rattle, so I thought it would be smart to inspect and possibly replace it. It wouldn’t hurt to replace yours bro 👍🏼

Thanks for posting this. I have a 2007 Honda Civic with 1.8L that I needed to change the tensioner on and, although it's not the same engine, your video was helpful.
Love the video! The noise that you showed, I have it while my Acura TSX is idling all the time and below 1500 rpm. Would it still be the tensioner?
Thanks for the support. How many miles are on your TSX? Tensioners are known to fail on K series, so it wouldn't hurt to replace it :)
If you’re watching for technical info about the tensioner, battery was wasted on filming Walmarts lack of 5w20 oil
I was going to ask why don’t you used pen oil or valueline or mobile oil
Nice video bro. Question? Do really have to take the head cover off and put the engine top dead center?? Or can you just do it with the counterclockwise turn till the tensioner is released of pressure?
Wondering this too! Looking to do this job, would be nice if I didn’t have to take valve cover off

Glad you liked it bro... thanks for the support 🙏🏼
Thank you bro my acura rsx 04 made a weird slaping chain sound its probably the tensioner very helpful dont need to remove the timing cover i love it
It needs the whole timing kit. Also valve lash adjustment may be needed at the same mileage
Any videos of replacing the timing chain and guides while motor is in the car ?
Unfortunately I don’t, but it can be done
nice choice the gold works awesome
Looks like you’ve saved me again Gerb, what is this like 4 times now? 😂
Come on, did I really ? Lol
Don't understand why you removed the cam cover, I didn't.
Also a billet tensioner with integrated O ring is a good upgrade
Probably just to check the cam gears for TDC and chain slack
So do you just need to rotate the crank until you can stick a pin in the existing tensioner? TDC isn’t necessary? I’m worried about messing up timing
