A good axe is a great thing to have, but getting someone to show you how to use it properly is priceless, it'll save your hands, back, and knees down the road along with handling it safely. Getting a sharp axe in the shin is no fun whatsoever lol. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

I am a fellow woodsplitter who has little need of the un-fun labor of a hydraulic machine. The old man taught me to invert the axe and swing it at a chopping block with the log above the axe when it gets stuck. You wanna watch your head if if comes loose, but it is brutally effective at splitting or clearing the head. I find that I do a lot of dancing with Oregon Oak--just about the most squirrelly stuff that you are ever gonna find.

Hey Buckin, I’ve been watching your channel about a year now. Thanks for keeping old saws, old axes, and tree cutting going in the day we live. I’m 60 and live in Tennessee and grew up with my grandpa cutting wood. He had a 1970 Homelite XL12, (loud rascal), but a good saw. Keep up the good stuff.

Buckin well said.. I have learned a lot over the years in the automotive industry.. some.of it was watching guys like my Dad and take it 1 step further.. so days it didn't work out, but I learned something from it. Having your own experience at whatever it is sometimes can be worth more than having someone show you..

Thank you again for great advice. The species of wood can dictate the type of axe to use. It’s difficult to split tough oak with the golf swing technique.

Happy new yr Buckin, 2nd comment in 6 yrs. Quick tip i learned on my own from busting wood for 43yrs ... axes swing on an arch, you can put a piece of wood on its side in front of the log ur splitting and you'll always hit the sideways piece and never touch the ground... no chopping block needed... you can bust wood on concrete slab and you'll always hit the side ways block in front.... axes swing on an arch, .. give it a try.. peace n love brother.

Never used a chopping block in the last 50 years. I learned a lot about kinetic energy getting my engineering degree. That last part of your swing is where most of the energy will be developed by force applied from the body, momentum gaining through the axe head travel and the weight of the axe head. You reduce the gain through momentum and gravity by shortening the swing. That twist or kip of the axe at the end of the swing also directs some of the energy into the split helping to force a stick of wood off the block. Works for me in Tennessee oak, hickory and cherry. Proper hanging of the axe head is important as well. I see so many single bit heads hung incorrectly in relationship to the handle.

Buckin I just wanted to say I have been doing your simple exercise ball daily workout to strengthen my core. I am 25 and 300 pounds when I started doing it I didn't let my size hold me back. Your gonna get strong or your not. Anyhow my goal was to complete the workout through the end (one arm and one leg up) by the 22 day mark. When I started I barley could balance on the ball now I come really close to finishing the workout and it has been about 20 days since I started it everyday. Anyhow it has seriously helped my lower back pain it's almost non existent so thank you.

Happy New Year Brother Buckin'!!....Love to you and your Family and all who seek kindred spirits on this site. I am still splitting wood up here in -30C...LOL! Yes, I love these debates, indeed the rectangular section handle is a great thing, it allows precise control of the edge of the blade when chopping and splitting, all the old Soviet Axes were hafted this way and lets face it those old guys and gals in Siberia get through a lot of firewood with minimum tools and toys. I have just rehafted and refinished 4 old soviet Axes, 3 in Ash, the last one in Birch (materials that the Soviets used to use). I also agree Ash is is an extremely fine handle material, we grew up in the UK with Ash as the principal species, springy and absorbs shock quite well. I usually use a LOW block to split, one cut from a stump, I do so because there is a lot of grit in the dirt here and I get sick of re-filing the axe edge. When I lived in the valley I split a lot of large rounds of Ponderosa Pine, they pop open easily, few knots to worry about, up in the forest...different story...tall narrow and often knotty trees means a different approach. Aggressive, inaccurate chopping results in overstrikes that destroy the novices axe handle, chopping has to be a mindful activity. Overstriking a Hickory shaft often results in a longitudinal split that can cut the hand, just the nature of the material. Take care friend...see you again sometime 🙏...stay strong 💪, WS.

A few months ago I asked why you preferred axes over mauls. Watching this video I totally understand now.. My local timber stand is super twisted and knotty.. Watching you play with that know mid video, I realized I prefer the maul because that piece you were dealing with is like every other one I come across. The way I deal with those is to sink the maul as best I can and have a 16# sledge close at hand that blasts the maul through most any know zero questions asked.
I would cry if I saw someone treat your ax the way I treat my run of the mill maul.

I dropped trees, cut and split them by hand for a number of years. The wood was mostly white ash from my wood lot. The last 20 years of splitting was done with a machine and my back was much better for it. I quit cutting and splitting wood almost 10 years ago and recently the emerald ash borer has killed all my ash trees.
I buy my firewood mostly, but still cut and split the occasional storm blowdowns.

I hear ya on the knots. I have some blue spruce with huge knots like that- you just arent going to split through them. Youll beat yourself blind, and shred the wood- the knots still there. You split around them when you can. Otherwise, its time to break out a saw, if you need it smaller.
Ash knots, too. Sometimes you can crack em apart. Other times, the chunk just laughs at you. Occasionally, itll grab your axe like a vice, and youll be stuck worse than youve ever been... as an old, not dumb guy, it just cut pieces like that into chunks and be done with it. Itll still burn just fine, even if it isnt in stick form!

Got about 1 hour splittin in today as it was 50degrees here in wny …. I’m a ground pounder myself cept I favor a maul over an axe so if I bust thru and happen to hit pay dirt it ain’t puttin the hurt on me tool (as much as it wood 🪵 an axe 🪓) … the chopping block is ok but imho it takes away valuable time/energy setting the axe/maul down , lifting the chunk up on the block , then having to grab the axe/maul : rinse and repeat. It’s ALOTTA wasted motion imho. Using a hookaroon to stand up chunks vertically on the ground and then bust thru em one at a time seems to be the most productive use of one’s time and energy … your mileage may vary
