    Until I started using something similar to the Magic Mat, I used one of those poly pockets that you use in folders as a shim. Really helps protect the cutting plate.

    I do soak mine in boiling water until cooled. The boiling water lets all of those paper fibers come out, and the plates are sparkling clean. I've tried just hot tap water, and that does not release those embedded fibers. Since I've started using the anna griffin Empress and the spellbinders machine, I've had no warping of the plates, so the soak in boiling water is only for the fiber removal. I do put them in a large cookie sheet pan, poor the water over the top, and weigh them down with a heavy pan filled with water. Soak until cooled. Dump, rinse, and marvel over my clean plates. Of course, I only every cut into one plate and keep the other plate pristine.
