As a Civil Engineering Student, I spent a Summer Vac Job 1969 working on this project. I laid out southern slip roads and the connection to what is now A182 at the Havannah Interchange. Interestin (?) fact - the raised embankments at Follingsby Interchange were constructed using Pulverised Fly Ash rather than compacted soil. This was an experimental technique designed to reduce the cost of the earthworks by using the waste products from surrounding coal mines.
Some people have mindfulness, others yoga and pilates. Here we are filling the dishwasher watching secrets of the motorway - like a warm blanket and cup of tea. People of culture unite.
With regards to the bio plant. The truck I currently drive for the foreseeable runs on CNG which is compressed natural gas to 200bar. The gas is sourced and offset by these plants which degrade and clean the gas before pumping into the mains gas feeds. After that it is pumped into your house and also filling stations that I use around the country. The closest to this is the one newly built at Newton Aycliffe just to the south. Just a little added information there 👍 Merry Christmas all
Sorry to throw water on your comment but I doubt that the CNG your truck uses is transported via the gas network... More likely carried in a tanker to the fuel station much like other fuels. I'm open to correction though, thanks anyway!
I'm surprised you didn't mention what is to me the most interesting aspect of the A194(M): Thanks to all the renumberings, northbound it starts with an off-ramp from the RIGHT of the A1(M).
And when it was the A1(M) the slip from what is now the bypass came in on the right. so it had to merge with itself. All to do with the unique single structure bridge. That was an American idea.
Thank you, Jon, for hours of witty banter and geography lesson. Happy Christmas, New Years, or whatever you celebrate. All the best from La Mesa, California USA.
Happy Christmas, Jon. I was getting concerned about the A1 re-routings - at some point in the future, the re-routings of the re-routings are going to end up in the North sea. And someone in the planning office will be thinking: 'That'll teach the bastards.'
How many times can something be rerouted, deemed unsuitable, resulting in it being rerouted? I thought the video was stuck in a groove for the first minute and half 😂
Just been tracking this on Google Maps, Jon. Have to say it raised an eyebrow to see that the A195 is shown as the A195 (M) all the way from where it leaves/joins the A1 (M) just South of Washington Services, right through to where it meets the A184 Felling by-pass, despite being single carriageway for almost the entire length and interrupted by numerous roundabouts! Take a look for yourself...
Yes I spotted that - and thought - next video! Actually it's 4 lane dual up to the A182, but as you say single carriageway after that. I can believe the first part might have been M numbered, but not the rest. A Google fail!
Goota say this is one of the best, most wicked sweet awesome weekly series on youtube, thank you Jon for and a merry christmas and happy new year to you and everyone watching.
When ever I come to the end of the A194M I never turn right onto the A184. It is much quicker just to carry straight on to access the A19 a bit further north.
Everyone has their unique reason for enjoying John's brilliant motorway series. For me the East Coast Yank, it's a trip each week to a part of the UK I will probably never visit, but I'm there anyway in spirit. Here's to driving on the left...
One of the things I love about this series, the outro music. Just when I thought I was over the nightmare that was Tots TV, this threw back a nostalgia throwback where I remember them and their magic bag. 😭 Merry Christmas Jon!
I now have "I'm a Tot, Je suis une Tot; someone, someone, Tiny; we're the Tots of tots' tv; 1, 2 3 (our friend donkey)" on a loop in my head. Thanks Jon
Love the interesting facts. But the bit that makes me smile the most is when I recognise the song at the end of the vid from a lot of 80’s and 90’s Brit kids shows. 😂
Top video series ! Back in the late 80's i discovered the power of 'travel by thumb' and so far you've retraced many of my subsequent journeys and as such I knew this motorway as the A1(m), many was the time (on a Friday evening) that I found myself walking from it's end point (near hebburn) all the way to Felling (it's thrilling in Felling !) After a 3 hour hitch-hike from the north-west !
My day is complete. I guessed correctly that while up here you would do the A194M... you added just enough local history too. You have previously done the Washington services on the A1M so all good.
Fun fact: I work for a company that’s designing a pipeline that goes alongside the A194(M) for 2 miles and goes under the Follingsby Interchange, you can actually see the temporary access road in the field to the left of the interchange on the aerial view.
What a fabulous post-Christmas present John! A motorway I neither have used nor had any prior knowledge of! A veritable Yule Log-jam of splendour! 😎💚🥂🍀
Nice to see you doing A194(M) motorway in County Durham and south of Gateshead that the motorway would have extended into Newcastle City Centre. And the history of how the A194(M) motorway was actually the A1(M) which is very interesting to know about. Before the A1 Trunk Road bypass was built to the West of Newcastle to avoid the city centre. But it’s interesting to know about how the A194(M) was built. Oh and Merry Christmas to you as well. 😊
Cheers Jon and have a great Xmas. It seems that a A(M) road should be referred to as a Ahem since they start off as one idea and become another, or even revert to their original identity after being the other idea. Perhaps it's Aah let's build a motorway for a specific project but Mmmm we haven't got the budget to go all out so let's make a Ahem.
When it was the A1(M), the A1 went east along what is now the A184 to Testos roundabout then north along what is now the A19. Leam Lane was always a dual carriageway with a 70 limit and was always a s shorter route. They have since changed speed limits a bit and played with lane reductions over the years. As others have pointed out, northbound you leave the A1(M) on the right, but previously you joined from the A1(M) to the A1(M) southbound.
Happy Christmas to you Jon, and thank you for a year of interesting and surprising videos - I'm not into cars or road travel, but even so I find your videos fascinating and funny. Here's to many more in 2024! 🎄🎅🎉🚗
Okay, the Tots TV music at the end just completed this entirely for me!
Possibly two of my three favourite things... roads and abandoned railways 😁
Thanks for all the vids this year Jon.
Festive peace ✌🏻
OK, what's the other?
@@willtricks9432Cadburys Curly Wurlys / they’re the second nicest thing this fella ever put in his mouth :)
Happy Christmas Jon, thank you for all your hard work with the amazing videos this year!
Seconded! 👍😎
Thirded (if that's even a word).
Nice one, thanks for watching!

200 bar is a terrifying amount of pressure 😬
@@davidrobert2007 250b on some vehicles.
Similar pressure for inflatable air rifles..

Thanks to all the renumberings, northbound it starts with an off-ramp from the RIGHT of the A1(M).
Just like the M1 does too. The southbound M1 starts by slipping off the to the right off the A1 M at A1M junction 43.
Thanks a lot mate, happy new year all the best for 2024!
The Leamside line is mooted for partial or full re-opening!
Was sort of hoping for a Christmas special of Secrets of the motorway! Jon dressed as santa or something 😳
Happy Christmas, Jon. I was getting concerned about the A1 re-routings - at some point in the future, the re-routings of the re-routings are going to end up in the North sea. And someone in the planning office will be thinking:
'That'll teach the bastards.'
😂😂😂
I don’t get it
0:38 i like the way it sounds like the audio has skipped back by mistake...
The Tots TV music at the end killed me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Another epic episode Jon
I’m sure once you have finished the motorways , you can do a series on colliery, that would keep you going for years !
Happy Christmas John, hope 2024 enables you to create more videos about the marvellously well thought out infrastructure in the UK.
Indeed! 👏
Yeah, "marvellously". Not.
How many times can something be rerouted, deemed unsuitable, resulting in it being rerouted? I thought the video was stuck in a groove for the first minute and half 😂
Yes, very confusing 😂

Happy Xmas and New year!
Another almost sensible road project. Good Work Jon. Have a fabulous festive season.
Happy Christmas you big sausage 😊
Thanks for all vids this year 🎅 🎄 🎁

When ever I come to the end of the A194M I never turn right onto the A184. It is much quicker just to carry straight on to access the A19 a bit further north.
It's kind of relaxing with these videos of curious and odd knowledge about road building that I never have any use for.
Everyone has their unique reason for enjoying John's brilliant motorway series. For me the East Coast Yank, it's a trip each week to a part of the UK I will probably never visit, but I'm there anyway in spirit. Here's to driving on the left...

My first video for Christmas day before anyone else is up. Great start to the day. Thanks John.

Thank you John and Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you great video and thank you for your Chanel this year
Merry Xmas John. Thank you for all the content
I was thinking why did the A194M sound familiar, I used to live a mile away from a section, from my bedroom window you could see the motorway.
Did you live on the Leam Estate/Springwell?
Only discovered you about an hour hour ago ,loving your channel, thanks so much 🤗
Happy Christmas Jon. Thank you for the hours of interesting videos this year. Have a wicked sweet awesome one mate.
Merrry Christmas Jon thank you for all the videos!

Awesome as always Jon, Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you and Merry Christmas!!!
Great video - Merry Christmas John!
Your next series should be secrets of the railways. Abandoned ones like this are quite fascinating to me.
Martin Zero should do a video on this.
Doesn't Jago Hazard and Dave and Rebecca Whickwick have this covered?
Have a good Christmas mate. I love watching your videos and glad you made it to Glasgow!
Thank you Jon for your fabulous and interesting Sunday videos. Your channel is the Best one on youtube. Merry Christmas from Fife.
