What I think is amazing is that most of the people using the placards are very fit. I've seen a couple L.A. ones where they parked with a placard to go to the gym, or on a long nature walk. The 2 ticket placard fines end up being around $2k total. Now that sends a message!

I was once on the phone with the sheriff providing a description and plate for a car and the owner heard me on the phone, I didn't know it was his car, be had the gull to say "yeah I parked there, so what" the dispatcher heard him and said they got the plates and even if he moved he was getting a ticket. When I walked out of the store the police were there writing tickets for everyone parked in handicap spots including that man, I'll admit, I was like meh, $250-500 fine, so what...
Oklahoma needs to start doing this kind of enforcement. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to go to Walmart and I end up circling around for several minutes because I can't find somewhere to park. I have a valid card because I have arthritis and can't walk very well due to bone and joint damage in my back and legs. It makes me mad to see at least two people parked in handicap spots illegally when I really need one! I'm lucky if I can find somewhere close in the regular spots of all the handicap spots are taken. Handicap spots are only for the disabled people that need them and those who park in those spots illegally need to be fined!

I either get pushed from a reg spot to the office (ok so sometimes I get rained or snowed on a little), or I get dropped at the front of the building & wait for my family member to walk back to me from a regular spot. Most handicapped people have already been thru hell just trying to get bathed and dressed to go out, Getting in and out of their vehicles is another cross to some. Having to drive around in circles while a healthy person takes their spot (was only gonna be in there a minute officer) has caused many a stressed handicapped person to give up and go home. It's cruel and it's against the law...Fine 'em a couple of thousand bucks & they will stop quickly.

I have a co-worker who is totally "enabled" using a placard. I am 65, she's about 20. I asked her about it. "Oh, my mom needs it." Is mom at work today with you? She was embarrassed and made excuses and still uses the space. When we arrive to work together and I see her, I let her know I'm watching. She will be caught and get the $499 (not 500?) fine and blame everyone but herself.

Saw a man park behind a handicap spot trapping a non handicap car. When the person came out he couldn't leave. The handicap person sat under a tree laughing. After 15 minutes he snuckbinto his car and left.
Our car's have disable plate's on them (for my husband). The only time I park in a handicapped spot is when he is with me. It's not worth getting caught illegally & what happens when someone really need's the spot?

My friend’s dad has waited in the car a few times listening to music while her grandma was shopping. The placard is for the grandma. He was asked only once when alone.
People are kind to your face when you are in the store and step aside when they see you are handicap to give you room but they take the Handicap Parking Space and walk a shorter distance than you had to just to reach the front door of the building...I wonder would they steal my grave as fast? Put points on their license so they can lose it for a while lets see if they are stupid enough to keep doing that. If they get towed while their license is suspended they will have pay the ticket fee and tow fee in order to get there car out. i had abdominal aortic anurysm surgery , i look normal cept for the cane and limp from DVT ( deep vein thrombosis ) so i understand people can appear healthy and still get a license plate or placard ... i chose the handicap plate , no probs , no placard to remember , just park legaly and go about my business ... maybe we should get rid of the placards and issue handicap plates ... just a opinion , or idea ... thanks !
I dropped off mother at the doctors door and refused to use the handicap spot for her car. My family has told me it is ok to park in the handicap spot by myself after dropping her by the door. I think it is WRONG and should be against the law. Does anyone know if there is a law against this type of selfishness?
There are a limited number of handicapped parking in my high rise apartment building parking lot. The local pharmacies provide delivery of medications, a good thing. But, their delivery folks often park illegally, blocking tenants ability to back out of spaces and even parking illegally in handicapped parking. One Family Pharmacy delivery fellow parked illegally in handicapped parking, tried to tell me that he was, indeed, handicapped, but had no placard. He left it at home. No sale, no buying his lies. I told him, and he could see, that our building has only a limited amount of handicapped parking for those who truly, legally, need the parking spaces. Often it is difficult to find one when returning home here. Shame on him, he seemed to feel entitled, and justified with illegally parking in handicapped parking. It can mean the difference of being able to go to the store, or other places, if one can legally park in, find, a handicapped parking space giving closer access to a business, etc. Those who feel that their illegal 'needs' override disabled persons with legally obtained/used handicapped placards should/need to be fined, and if illegally using a placard, that it is readily confiscated, not to be reissued. Sorry this is so lengthy, but it seemed a good time to vent my frustration.

I yelled at him to move and he said "I'll only be a minute." I called the cops and blocked his car. You don't fuck with a US Sailor who has a disabled brother.
I think the worst offenders are the companies that put their rental movie machines right in front of the handicap parking. People renting movies and I want to pick up my meds. Calling police dispatch with a picture of the car license helps. But honestly it's not worth the fine.

should be a Country wide Fee of $700 1st time and $1000 then on for parking in disabled parking without Proper plates/placard. Dont let these jerks get away and if they keep using the spots then revoke their license then tow n auction off their vehicle .... they will rethink their stupidity , especially since in drivers ed your taught if your NOT disabled dont park in those spots . Also remember not all disabilities are physical people with bad backs/hips from accidents etc , people with breathing iissues etc those who go thru chemo treatments etc also deserve to park in those spots to make it easier for them.
Illegal use is one thing, but $200 because you forgot the expiry date? I don't know how long they last in the US, but here in the UK mine lasts for 4 years. As such I've missed the expiry date twice and got a ticket for it. Fortunately our courts are more forgiving and waived them when I showed I still had proof of entitlement and had renewed the badge as soon as I realised.

There are a number of people who have the handicap placard who really don't qualify for it. The rules are pretty hard but the doctors will sign the form out of sympathy. You can find the qualifications on your states web site under the DMV section.
They have to many handicap parking spots at my GYM . And none of the people using them have mobility problems. In some locations they now have special parking for young children in vehicles. I am single and use those all the time. One lady asked me where the young child was and I told her , in the trunk. 😂
Public schools around us is where they should go. All day and especially during after school activities lazy parents park in the handicap spots, then when the kid comes some of them even are too lazy to normally back out of the spot so those with larger SUVs and trucks just drive forwards between the 2 signs and through the walking path. It is also a smaller suburb, so its not like they have that much better to be doing.
Perhaps a fine would be great, but I would like to see the offenders when they get older and you really need to park closer. That old bag that said her husband was at home (actually deceased) really needs a heavy fine and barred from ever getting a placard.

Hired caregivers take them all the time! My grandmother's ex-caregiver stole her placard because when she quit she never brought the placard back to her. Now, when I drive my grandmother somewhere I cannot park in a handicap spot so I have to hazard to drop her off in the front and leave her be herself to go find parking. Dont let these jerks get away and if they keep using the spots then revoke their license then tow n auction off their vehicle .... they will rethink their stupidity , especially since in drivers ed your taught if your NOT disabled dont park in those spots . Also remember not all disabilities are physical people with bad backs/hips from accidents etc , people with breathing iissues etc those who go thru chemo treatments etc also deserve to park in those spots to make it easier for them.

Illegal use is one thing, but $200 because you forgot the expiry date? I don't know how long they last in the US, but here in the UK mine lasts for 4 years. As such I've missed the expiry date twice and got a ticket for it. Fortunately our courts are more forgiving and waived them when I showed I still had proof of entitlement and had renewed the badge as soon as I realised.
+irHenryofRR: I suspect that something similar would happen here in the states. As to the expiry date as you put it, I think that's there is as much variance from state to state here as there is in Europe.

There are a number of people who have the handicap placard who really don't qualify for it. The rules are pretty hard but the doctors will sign the form out of sympathy. You can find the qualifications on your states web site under the DMV section.

They have to many handicap parking spots at my GYM . And none of the people using them have mobility problems. In some locations they now have special parking for young children in vehicles. I am single and use those all the time. One lady asked me where the young child was and I told her , in the trunk. 😂

Public schools around us is where they should go. All day and especially during after school activities lazy parents park in the handicap spots, then when the kid comes some of them even are too lazy to normally back out of the spot so those with larger SUVs and trucks just drive forwards between the 2 signs and through the walking path. It is also a smaller suburb, so its not like they have that much better to be doing.
Perhaps a fine would be great, but I would like to see the offenders when they get older and you really need to park closer. That old bag that said her husband was at home (actually deceased) really needs a heavy fine and barred from ever getting a placard.
Cheaters! Liars! Punks! Stop using another person's placard. Think about the needs of those who truly need the parking places that are designated for them!

Even down under we have the same problem with able body people using the mum,s card i have just asked my cronic pain doctor to fill one out as it free to get on ,One chap lost a leg in vietnam and people will still fight to get that first park near the front door its silly i would change places in a minute if i could but they must have the park spot i have a friend who,s son needs a wheel chair and needs extra room people are so self selfish the world moves around them cheers folk Merry Christmas an a Happy New Year .
Hired caregivers take them all the time! My grandmother's ex-caregiver stole her placard because when she quit she never brought the placard back to her. Now, when I drive my grandmother somewhere I cannot park in a handicap spot so I have to hazard to drop her off in the front and leave her be herself to go find parking. Because she cannot get a replacement
