  • Inside the beautiful Alnwick Garden, behind a locked gate, there's the Poison Garden: it contains only poisonous plants. Trevor Jones, head gardener, was kind enough to give a guided tour!

    My word, there are a lot of pro-marijuana people in the comments. Just to be clear: it's in a cage because British law requires it to be. The khat they grow is too, but not the opium poppies - but because those were just tiny shoots when I was there, they didn't make the edit. And yes, "poison" is a bit strong, but for anyone who's convinced there are no dangers to cannabis, I refer you to Foreman, JE (2000) -- although of course, that's worth comparing with his later 2014 work for balance.

    My college roommate was a Botany major and tended the school greenhouse. He thought the Angel's Trumpet was a very cool flower and began growing cuttings in his dorm room. Only after sleeping under a dozen or so blooms on his windowsill and shelves, and having increasingly lucid and confusing nightmares, did he do a bit of research and discovered the hallucinogenic properties of the plant. Just a look around my neighbourhood, and I wonder how people are not poisioning themselves (or each other) all the time. Yews, Angels' trumpets, aconitum... okay, I have foxgloves in my own front yard and there are opium poppies growing in the cracks in the pavement on my street. But I'm a botanist. I know what to avoid. I guess people just don't know what they could do with those plants, so they just ignore them and nothing ever happens.

      Scampwuhh, "All the plants in here have the ability to kill you."
      It's impossible to smoke enough weed to kill yourself, as the amount needed physically cannot be smoked fast enough by humans (can't remember the exact amount but I think it was hundreds of kgs in a hour or so). Maybe you can directly inject a large amount of oils into your system, but that's a long shot for calling something deadly. Everything is deadly when directly injected in large quantities.
      It's toxic, poisonous a drug and is bad for your health when ingested in uncontrolled ways, that's undeniably true. But the only way weed can realistically kill you is if a large bale of it drops directly on your head.

    If any of you people out there a fantastic day or two out you'd be hard pressed to find it anywhere else than Alnwick castle and gardens and finish off with a day going round Alnwick itself. The highlight of the castle grounds is of course the poison garden, the guides are very knowledgeable and they had us all laughing with sayings from wives/ partners and gfs to the effect of don't bother getting any ideas, now that I think on it you've got Hadrian's wall not far away so you'd need a week to enjoy everything in the area. Thank you people of Alnwick and the surrounding area and I'm looking forward to coming back in 2022

      Jademalo oxalic acid - nasty stuff. its mostly concentrated in the leaves as opposed to the stalk, and you need to eat a fair amount to actually ingest a lethal dose, but it's still poisonous. Now if they really wanted to be a little more imaginative, they would have black bryony in there - that is a far more poisonous plant than rhubarb.

    Gardener here. I personally find it rather interesting, how most people view such plants.
    There are many, many, many plants most of us have in their gardens because of either practical use or aesthetic, yet the majority knows fairly little about them.
    We always had to make sure to ask the customers if they had children or animals and educate them on the plants they had on their mind.
    Unfortunately, not everyone does that which could easily result in a fatal accident.
    The point I'm trying to make is that there is so much potential knowledge out there, and most of it is not only half as interesting.

    i'm no pot advocate, but i find it funny that the weed was locked up in a cage, but the other plant that "used to be used in tea to 'loosen lips' because it's a hallucinogenic" was totally cool being left out. So it's not a matter of danger, it's a matter of popularity that is why the laws are created

    • @Kahtisemo
      @Kahtisemo ปีที่แล้ว +86

      I mean, I just figured it's in a cage not to protect people but to keep people from stealing it. As you said the popularity of it is what makes it necessary because while I'm sure there's a market somewhere for belladonna, it's not worth breaking into a public garden to get. Whereas there could be a real risk of tourists trying to steal off the cannabis plant either to sneak a treat at home or trade it off somewhere.
