  • In early January I stayed at Resorts World and attended CES 2023, so I got a free pass for the Las Vegas Loop. I admit I thought it was convenient the first time I took it, but that may have been the cold talking. Let's talk about the stupidity that is reinventing a worse subway and lauding it as the future.

A few months ago I watched a documentary on the Mont Blanc tunnel fire. For those who don't know in 1999 a transport truck caught fire driving through this tunnel between France and Italy. The driver of the truck ended up stopping 6 km (about 3.7 miles) into the tunnel, which was about half way through. Because of the lack of emergency access points or exists in this over 7 mile long tunnel, there was no way for other people also traveling through the tunnel to escape. There were no automatic smoke sensors or cameras in the tunnel so the fire had to be reported by an employee who saw smoke. The tunnel ventilation system trapped the toxic smoke inside, suffocating many of the drivers and emergency responders who became trapped. At one point firefighters tried to take refuge in one of the fireproof rooms designed for an emergency like this, but the fire burned so hot that the room was insufficient to save them. All in all 39 people died.
I know this was a long winded explanation of a disaster that happened nearly 24 years ago, but looking at Musk's tunnels all I can think is that something like this is inevitable. They look like fucking death traps. There's no way to escape they're so narrow, there aren't any emergency access points, and I can't imagine they've built things like fire cubicles for people to escape to if there ever is a fire. Considering Teslas run on lithium ion batteries which are prone to things like, idk, catching on fire, I am terrified that people are going to die in this tunnel. Elon Musk never thinks his ideas through, and it's very clear that his engineers haven't even taken basic safety measures in building this tunnel.
Anyways sorry for the long rant, love your videos, and thanks for talking about this!

It's a small thing but it really makes a difference when it comes to longer routes to not feel so disconnected from the outside world and actually notice things while going around.

It should be noted that many of his projects are subsidized by tax payer money, and the Tesla Loop was created in California to fight off the state from building better train infrastructure. He could build trains, (or just tell his engineers to build better trains) in a safer more efficient manner than our conventional subways work. He could even slap his logo on the trains and call them "Tesla Movers" or something I dont care, but telsa is a car company, and a healthier train infrastrucutre would get more people out of cars and use public transit instead. And that doesn't help Tesla.

You’ve got it completely back-to-front John. If this was a subway project, taxpayers would indeed be saddled with an enormous debt of tens of billions of dollars.
However, because of the incredibly low $20 million per mile cost of Loop tunnels it has allowed the Boring Co to build the 65 miles of tunnels in the upcoming greater Las Vegas Loop for free down the Las Vegas Strip with the 69 hotels, casinos and attractions paying for their own Loop stations which cost as little as $1.5M each.

@@toomanyaccounts However, the 68 mile, 93 station Vegas Loop (extending on from the original LVCC Loop) has been approved and is now being built at zero cost to the LVCVA and Las Vegas's taxpayers as The Boring Co (TBC) will pay for all of the 68 miles of tunnel construction.
The LVCVA will be paid 5% of the ticket revenue generated by TBC who will operate the Loop as a franchisee and retain the other 95% of ticket sales for service, maintenance and profit.
The 93 hotels, casinos, the university and Allegiant Stadium have all enthusiastically signed up to pay for the 93 Loop stations ($1.5M per station unless any individually wish to build something really grandiose) in order to get access to an incredibly fast and cheap mass transit system with a station right at their front door.

I've seen cars on fire on the side of the road, or even driving down the road, and they don't even make the local news, much less global news.
The chance that an EV battery will Catch fire is 0.0012%. The chance of an ICE vehicle catching fire is 0.1%.
Of the Tesla fires that have happened, a third are related to charging. Since they charge the vehicles in an above ground lot away from the loop, any fires that happened there would not affect the Loop operation.
Of the rest, a large percentage of fires happen after major collision. The loop is designed to avoid major collisions. The cars travel in single lane tunnels, so they're not subject to high-speed head-on collision risk, and there's no overtaking, which can also cause accidents.
Any damage to a car's battery will have that car taken out of service. Any car that reports overheating will be taken out of service. These actions will further reduce the already tiny risk. Worrying about Tesla fires in the tunnels is like worrying about your cruise ship sinking.
Cruise ships do sink. Trains derail, Subway cars get engulfed in flames. Airplanes crash. These things do happen, and though there haven't been any Tesla fires in tunnels, there is a tiny possibility of one, and yes, it would be hot and hard to extinguish. But these things aren't a reason to cancel passenger ships, trains, subways, airplanes, or the Loop.

The SEATAC airport has a 4 car train on a loop that goes three stops through the terminals. It fits probably 100-200 passengers if you squish and runs every 2-5 minutes. This kind of train would be perfect for a convention center-- one tunnel, one to two trains, runs frequently in a loop. There is no way that these teslas are better than a train like that.
I only hope that in the future they can reuse the tunnels and add a train.

Pfft... as if he knows serial killer mentality. They're not necessarily going to be poor people. Lol. As someone who has had more than a bit of a brush with that type of insanity neccessary to make one, I can assure you that all it takes is enough repeated emotional trauma and turmroil, with another particularly devastating event intentionally caused by another person on top of all that, to set someone completely unhindged -- and particularly if there are particularly striking features associated with said trauma/people involved. I am, fortunately or unfortunately, unable to go completely insane, so I've been forced to have mostly gotten over the trauma (you either do, or you go crazy, or you die) - but people with certain features still make me do a double take, even though I KNOW those people could never possibly be anywhere near close enough to me because they're more likely to be halfway around the world far across the ocean. Believe me when I say it was a *lot worse* than just a "double take" before, with senseless paranoia and rage threatening to take over if I saw people with specific features. Although I actually am poor, that is more of a "I don't care to involve myself much in society" sorta deal after many other things after that, rather than a "it is not possible for me to be at least moderately successful" sorta deal -- so no, serial killers are not necessarily going to be poor - in fact, it's easier if they have some amount of wealth and especially knowledge, since those are what would make it easier for them to get away with henious acts. And chances are, they can play off as "normal" people because they were indeed victims at some point
[Additional note: triggers after the event -- basically the only things necessary are to "resent your lot in life" and see things that remind the person of the instigators. So, if the person in question is in... say... a job that overworks them and underpays them, that can be enough - even if that means they aren't necessarily going to be poor from it]
TL;DR -- Don't be assholes and toss other good people under the bus and gang pile on them when they are down when they've not done much (or any) actual wrong - that's a big contribution to developing serial killers. Treat people better and you won't have this problem in the first place

It's a bit of an odd city. For a start, it's in the middle of nowhere. Most cities are established in a location for a reason - good transport connections, or built around a fortification in a defensible area, or established near a good natural resource. Coasts are good places for cities, or upon rivers. Las Vegas was built in that location for the opposite reason: It started as a rest-and-resupply location for parties crossing the desert wilderness. The economy today is almost entirely built around tourism and industries supporting tourism, because there's simply nothing else there.

Each time I've visited Las Vegas I thought, "why do people come here to do things they can mostly do in their nearest major cities?" But then I realize it's just the vibe.

    • @ValerieEnriquez

Probably nonexistent. Even a lot of otherwise well-done transit systems aren't very accessible. I think Zach Anner did a video about taking the New York subway and the challenges of just getting around in general using a wheelchair.

    • @kevinbailey8827

I think it's minimal. They use Model Y's with "Falcon wing" doors that are easier to get in and out of, and I've seen videos where there's a rack on the back of some of them to hold a wheelchair.
I'm hoping that when Tesla says it's working on a dedicated robotaxi vehicle, the end result will be able to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility scooters in the cabin.

It’s important to note just how INEFFICIENT this thing is. It’s got a maximum hourly capacity of around 5K people an hour, which is absolutely pitiful compared to an actual transit system. Paris metro line 1 can carry around *25,000* people per hour, even though it runs with much lower frequencies compared to the loop (2 min at rush hour compared to theoretically every few seconds). So basically, it holds 1/5th the number of people as a metro line while requiring similar infrastructure while also being much more dangerous (there isn’t space to open the doors on the loop in the tunnel, I’ll let you figure out why that’s bad on your own)

    • @kevinbailey8827
      @kevinbailey8827 ปีที่แล้ว

This loop was built to carry a maximum of about 5K per hour. That's the maximum it will likely ever have to carry. At CES, the busiest show of the year, it performed very well and everyone who needed a ride got one with an average wait time under 10 seconds.
It would have been unbelievably wasteful and inefficient to build a system with the capacity to carry 25K per hour like the Paris metro line, because on the busiest days it would be one 1/5 full. And on normal days it would be 95% empty. What fool would build something like that and shove it into a space that's less than a mile long?

Just build a small people mover like you get in theme parks. It'll have higher capacity and won't need to cycle the vehicles to charge them. Far less complex to maintain too as it's just a buggy on wheels with some motors getting power from the third rail.

    • @kevinbailey8827
      @kevinbailey8827 ปีที่แล้ว

It's more efficient than the typical urban train, in terms of energy used per passenger.
When there aren't many passengers, vehicles in the Loop can remain parked, using virtually no energy. A smaller number of vehicles can still provide excellent service to passengers and keep their wait time close to 0.
With an urban train, you can deal with slow times by removing cars from the trains, and you can reduce the frequency of the trains. But that means making passengers wait longer.
A full train is obviously more efficient than the same number of passengers in a lot of individual cars, but the train will take all of the passengers to more stops, wasting their time and using extra energy to stop and start so often. The loop vehicles will skip all of the stations in between and only stop at the destination.

That actually improves the throughput of the system substantially. You go from 2000-3000 passengers per hour per direction to 15,000 passengers per hour per direction.
I have jokingly suggested that they can repurpose the tunnels as a bike lane (about 12,000 passengers per hour per direction): probably bottlenecked by however you are supposed to get to/from ground level.
