God knows there's plenty of debate on what's the bestest EVAR system for attaching crap, kinda like everything else in the world of firearms, but I've been really happy with M-lok so far.

    Well done !!! Upon a side note... Anytime I am looking for a new tool, I always in due time, type a few series's of words, that further define the tool I am looking for. For example, You showcased the thread rolling machine. Well, when typing in that word(s) "thread rolling machine", it is often times, the search results will show every blasted manufacturer of the industrial world who makes the "thread rolling machines"... SO, what I do, is I soon after that acquiring the base line of what is offered from the industrial word, I type various words in front of the "thread rolling machine" like, "PORTABLE".... or "HAND HELD", SMALL, BENCH TOP, etc.... of course, these are descriptive words, as stated to further define the search engine to hone in on what I want... The reason I mention this is, I have found some really amazing tools, that way, that I would have otherwise, NEVER found, as the search engine will only point in one direction, to get me answers. I then follow that batch of words with additional descriptive words, like DIY, HOME MADE, SCRATCH BUILT.. granted, that often time will not showcase units for sale, or not offered in a production run, but, beings I have no issue making my own tools, when none are offered, you can pretty much count on some other idiot like myself, that spent 900 hours R&D'ing a one off machine, to perform a job once that only took 1.3 seconds to do, and I can harvest his/her ideas to make the choice if I need to justify making one too?... There is my two none cents...

    I was wondering ho you were going to thread music wire, I was suspecting a thread rolling operation but when you broke out the table top model of thread roller I was in gadget nirvana, lol. A couple of things you probably have thought about but I will mention anyway just in case are maybe consider adding a small counterbore to the trunnion so the spokes find their location easier. Another may be to use a pressed powdered metal part for the end cap so it’s net shape and you don’t have to slice it and machine it. The pressed part could also have the step down and smaller bore to maintain the alignment with the barrel with less material overall required than an extrusion and an extra piece? Your videos just make me feel like I’m part of your team and want to help-even if you don’t want or need it 😬
    Keep up the good work!

    • @markserbu
      @markserbu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Tony Bjorklund Thanks for the comments! Powdered metal would be a good choice for the end flange but I don't think we'll ever have the quantities to make it cost effective. There is already a small counterbore in the threaded holes in the trunnion. I'm sure the plastic spoke guide/damper will be what we end up using and should do very well.

    I think the extrusions are pretty good. I still think spokes are a bit odd, while it has not been done before(???). Any way, as long as they dont rust it should be good.
    Great that it saves time! Extrusions seem to be the way to go for handguards on guns today.
    Looking at the other/old handguard, i think you can make that part from just one sheet of metal, so you only have to weld one seam. Also the holes can be punched in one go for the M-Lock. If you think what you have got is better, go for it. Aluminum is lighter, and does not corrode. The extrusion I suspect will be a bit more precise, but who knows maybe a stamped part front guard can be accurate when it is welded in a rig made for it. I think that is fast too.
    Good luck with the build!
    Greetings,
    Jeff

    I'm intrigued by the "spoke" system within the guard and the purpose for it. I watched the other video where you shortly explained about the tensile strength of wire and properties of steel under tension, but I must admit I don't understand how this interacts or effects the weapon and its operation. Is there a "problem" you were looking to solve (Like numb hands from excess vibration) that required a creative solution like this ? As far as I knew with the original form of the handguard and the way it was welded, I thought was purely from a practical standpoint of just making a part fit. I didn't think the handguard had any additional function to the actual operation of the weapon. Which is why I don't seem to understand the purpose of the spoke system. I mean this with the utmost respect because I love creative mechanical engineering solutions, but what problem does it solve ?

    • @arthurmoore9488
      @arthurmoore9488 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can take a guess. How do you hold the handguard on to the rest of the weapon without it coming loose or deforming? As near as I can tell, the whole tuning thing is the equivalent of using a torque wrench. This allows for a piece that by itself is too weak in shear to easily be extruded and fitted. So, the major advantage is in manufacturing.
      Another benefit isn't weight savings, but the thickness allows attachments to work. Making the steel that thick would have made everything too heavy. However, welding aluminum is apparently pretty difficult.

    Is the primary reason for this pretensioned system to have a certain strength to weight ratio? I generally get the impression that people don't mind a lot of extra weight on that style of firearm, but lights certainly appeals to me.

    • @PrinceAlhorian
      @PrinceAlhorian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certain object in tension are always stronger than under compression.
      Suspension bridges are good examples of the idea.
      Plus getting a .50 BMG to be lighter is always a bonus.

    I am REALLY curious as to how that behaves under the load of a cartridge firing and what it sounds like (and what it sounds/behaves like when one wire is under less or more tension, because let's face it, that IS going to happen in the field eventually).

  • @rafaellastracom6411
    @rafaellastracom6411 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the interest of simplicity as well as damage tolerance, have you considered attaching the guard to the trunnion by way of a heavy force fit? Once in place they can be pinned or screwed to the trunnion to ensure it does not back out due to vibration from firing.

    Hey mark is there an engineering reason you went with aluminum extrusion instead of traditional CNC milling ?

      Once established, extrusion is usually more cost effective at higher production volumes than machining from each one from billet. Not an engineering reason, but yeah....

      I doubt it's so much an engineering reason as it is a speed and price reason. Still shouldn't be any less capable of handling the stresses though. Edit: 7:00 LOL as soon as I finished typing this he says exactly that. Go figure.

      Imagine having to hog out 95% of the volume of a huge block of square stock to get that thin profile.

      @@ChucksSEADnDEAD yeah my day job is to setup and run parts off a few CNC Mills. We fill literal trash and full of chips.

      @@ChucksSEADnDEAD indeed. Not to mention it all wants to move and distort when removing so much.
