10,000 movies? 100,000? How many on how many platforms??? Netflix, MAX, Prime, Peacock. Apple, Hulu , TH-cam, the list is absolutely endless and this ONE GUY, Darren Van Damme has totally locked down the goto for knowing and presenting exactly what to watch. Darren you are a MACHINE bringing it home every time you make a new list.
I first heard about Oldboy when I worked at a video store. This Korean couple I talked to often came in and rented it. I was admiring it as I checked them out, and they asked me if I liked crazy violent movies, and if I minded subtitles. I told them I was down, They told me to check it out. I told them I would rent it when they returned it and I did. I was blown away.
I first saw Oldboy when Netflix only mailed DVDs. It changed me completely. At that point I started watching many foreign films from India and Korea. Netflix was the only place I could get a chance to see most of them. I’m so glad I did. Many were enjoyable and unforgettable. I didn’t mind reading subtitles then but now at 73 years old my eyesight is not good and it’s difficult reading so I mostly stick to dubbed foreign movies but I know I’m missing something doing that.
I subscribe to many of these streaming platforms but yet week after week I ponder what to watch - defeated by endless choices. That was until now. I have watch several of Darrens' movie recommendation before. This particular one appears very interesting as all the movies seem noteworthy and have added many to my watchlist on Netflix. Thanks for the recommendations.
This is one of your stronger lists, lots of great movies on it. He Never Died and Man from Nowhere are two in particular that I have watched multiple times. The Outpost is a great war movie that I think just suffered from poor marketing and some burnout for war movies when it came out.
Thank you! I've just added a stack of films to my list. What you've done is important. We need to see action adventure films from other countries and expand our horizons. I'm really looking forward to these.
Joel Kinnamen is underrated, I think he's amazing. I loved him in The Killing series, he was the highlight of RoboCop and was great in Altered Carbon so I'll watch anything he's in. Lots of great flix on this list, thanks Darren.
i thought he was amazing in The Killing as well, but I havent really liked any of his other characters even near as much as I liked what he did with The Killing. Thats just an awesome series overall
Bro, I really appreciate your site and even though I am a cinephile and I’ve seen so so many movies, I love watching your lists to see if it’s possible I missed something, but usually you remind me to rewatch something I haven’t seen in ages…so thank you so much for what you do!
Dude - these are great recos. I have seen a couple on this list and loved them a ton - so it makes me want to watch every other movie you recommend here. Thanks so much!!
I've seen Henry Rollins' spoken word performances, and Black Flag was my favorite punk band back in the day. But I've never seen any of Rollins' movies. So I'm really looking forward to seeing He Never Died.
I have no idea what you're talking about, but I TOTALLY understand what you're saying! EXCELLENT DESCRIPTIONS. Gonna check some of them OUT! Thank you!
PRO TIP: If you want to be blind drunk in under ten minutes, take a shot every time he says “criminally underrated” & “highly recommend”. I highly recommend this criminally underrated video for party animal movie watchers everywhere.
Excellent list, my man! Good Time is AMAZING! That French story style of getting in over your head and the universe making things worse and worse is so well executed. Masterpiece.
I see a lot of movies, but the only ones of these I've seen is "The Occupant", "The Outpost", and "The Conversation", which were all great - thanks for the new leads!
Love the channel. Here's some ideas for video themes- gritty war movies, best dark crime/comedies, Innovative post-apocalyptic flicks, badass heist movies, funniest standup specials and most ridiculous slapstick comedies. Also you should really focus on killer series and limited series sometime.
If you wasnt a hardcore Drinking Game, take a shot every time you hear the word "Gangster". For Lightweights, every time you hear the word "Subtitles".
S. Craig Zahler and the Safdi Brothers are my favorite directors today, I look forward ro everything they do. Their movies put me on the edge of my seat!
I finally watched Brawl on Cell Block 99 after your recommendation and I loved it! I’m not even a fan of Vince Vaughn at all but he was fantastic. The soundtrack was INSANE!!! I’m 37 but I recognized Eddie Levert of the O’Jays and bought it immediately. Gonna watch Dragged Across Concrete next! I’ll always check out your suggestions..even if it takes me a while! Love ya man!!
@Flick Connection. The Next 3 Days was the shit. Definitely underrated and one of my fav Crowe movies. Something I can TRULY see myself die doing trying to save my Queen…
Oldboy came up behind me and slapped me upside the head. I was twisted. The Outpost is infinitely, miraculously rewatchable, literally. It stuns me every time that this horror show actually happened.
OldBoy the Korean original is one of my favourite asian movies of all time - totally breathtaking until and including the final moment. One or two movies come up to its level - Battle Royale (1999). Infernal Affairs (2002). The Conversation (1974) is a very intricate, complicated, but ultimately rewarding watch. It may takes about 5 watches to start to understand what is going on.
From the Revenge Trilogy (Old Boy is the second movie), my favorite and the one people talk the least about has to be, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance. That movie also goes to some dark places and the way a mistake leads to a series of incidents with no return is something else. Again there is some dark stuff in that movie, but its a masterpiece.
Netflix has the best dubbing company I've seen to date. It didn't used to bother me to read subtitles but now i prefer if movies are dubbed because i feel like i miss too much when I'm busy reading subtitles, especially if they're speaking too fast for me to keep up

unless people have a completely genuine reason for not having the subtitles, i just believe its laziness. having an overdub is just unsulting to the actors imo
Excellent FLICK CONNECTION Darren. Great to see Dragged Across Concrete and The Conversation ranked highly. Excellent films. Many thanks for sharing with us 👍💎👍💎👍
I WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO WATCH ON NETFLIX AND I HATE GETTING ON NETFLIX SOMETIMES BECAUSE I CAN SPEND "90MIN" JUST LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO WATCH. THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO, YOU GAVE ME SEVERAL MOVIES TO CHECK OUT!
Well done for the list, I stopped watching standard TV and going to the movies years ago and now I search for decent stuff that late at night I will sit and watch via a PC connected to 654" Smart TV. Your list will be very useful but even so, I doubt only about three will be worth watching sadly, the thing is an as you showed having OldBoy at the top of your list, we rarely get anything of such quality even from the South Korean market these days.
Rollins brings a lot of subtlety to a complicated character. I really was pulled in by him. The supporting cast was also impressive. I'm commenting here because I was on board until the last 4 minutes where it looked like they ran out of time and patience- trading a well paced and choreographed experience for a trite- lowbudget- let's make up for a lack of money with a crazy plot twist garbage dump of exposition. I went from really being on board to feeling let down. Trimming the last scene to a moment like that of "No Country for Old Men" was there and it was traded for a sloppy and ham handed slurry to help the slow ones catch up. Great job to all involved. I do wish there was enough faith in the work to that last moment to let the movie fill in the blanks by itself. Sooo close. Thanks anyway.
"The Next Three Days" is an American remake of 2008 French film "Pour Elle" (aka "Anything For Her"). The original is a much better film, so if you like the Russell Crowe version then you will love the original if you can find it.
❤❤ I’ve been watching you for a long time, Darren and to be honest not always a fan of your recommendations. This list is definitely my favorite list. I’ve found 5 movies to add to my watchlist that I haven’t seen before. Also to have Old Boy as your number 1 pick is fantastic. I’ve watched it twice over the years and was one of the first Korean films I watched. Love that movie, but you definitely have to use the subtitles as otherwise the dialogue won’t make any sense since the dubbing is horrible.
Some of my favourite films in this list - He never dies, next three days, Eagle eye... all on my watchlist with the informant, arkansas and holy spider
Thanks for the recommendations! I'm not into war flicks and watched The Outpost mostly out of curiosity, cause it's based on a book by CNN's Jake Tapper, and liked it. What's most, there are so many chars and names, I actually enjoyed it more on second watch, already knowing who was who. And The Next 3 Days is great. I loved Crowe playing a regular dude.
The Night Comes For Us is one of the most violent, bloody movies I've ever seen. Makes Peckinpah look like an amateur. Looking forward to watching Headshot!
Have you seen “Habit” “Wendigo” or the more recent “Depraved”, all written & directed by Larry Fessenden? It’s his horror trilogy of vampires, werewolves & the Frankenstein story. All really good, especially Depraved, a modern take on Frankenstein. He Never Died is great& reminded me of Fessendens’ movies.
Yeah. One thing that's happened is that equipment costs have plummeted. What these means is that there was a certain level of quality that you could not get before unless it was a major motion picture production. Now - you have a lot of countries that can support their own movie industry and they've come out with a lot of interesting movies. Then - with these Streaming Services like Amazon Prime and Netflix - you get to see all them on you computer. The thing here is that I have to be in the mood to watch something interesting rather than purely entertaining. .
Dragged Across Concrete is a very different kind of police/crime drama. The long scenes with odd dialogue is quite unique and; if you can be patient, it’s a great film that will stay with you long after you watch it
I have seen a few of these movies and you definitely like the slow gritty movies with higher characters development. So do I so I’m going to check out a couple of these like Arkansas
Dude, great recommendations. I have mentioned this before, not on Netflix, not sure which streaming service to be honest, but you have to check out the S Korean flick "A Hard Day" (2014). One of the best thrillers to ever come out of S Korea
The best programs on Netflix hands down are from South Korea, some are English dubbed but most come with subtitles but don't let that scare you. Think of subtitles as reading a children's book, few words with lots of pictures. The story lines and acting are really good regardless of the genre.
Robert Patterson is a very unrated actor, in my opinion. Veteran is an awesome movie! I must admit this time, there are several movies I intend to watch from this list. You also had quite a few that I have already seen
Death Wish 2 featured Larry Fishbourne which would later become Lawrence Fishbourne , Charles's movies often featured starter actors which are household names today like Danny Trejo.x
I watched old boy 20 years ago... I don't remember the plot very well. I just remember that I enjoy it very much and that it thought me the definition of plot twist... I am grateful because I get to enjoy it again.
Holy Spider was amazing. The production values aren't absolutely stellar, but the story is so good. I watched it a few months ago and still find myself thinking about it probably weekly. The son of the killer and his treatment by the media... maybe more disturbing than the killer

Check out I Saw the Devil!
As great a movie that OLDBOY is . Am I the only one who feels it is the 3rd best of the VENGEANCE trilogy? LADY VENGEANCE being the best IMHO?
I'm gonna watch it tonight after reading this and the video review. Never heard of it. Stoked.
@@alantorres7632 The cinematography is by far the best of the three.
Watch the Korean Old Boy at least once a year. Spikes Lee's version of Old Boy was a well done American version.
Choi Min - Sik who plays the lead role in Oldboy is the Robert DeNiro of Korean Cinema. His role in I Saw The Devil is also mind blowing.
Oldboy, FTW! That ending, PHEW! I saw it when it was first available & have the DVD backed up and ready to play whenever I need my fix
Triple Frontier is another hidden gem on Netflix right now. Great good heist movie. Very similar to Heat IMO.

This is one of your stronger lists, lots of great movies on it. He Never Died and Man from Nowhere are two in particular that I have watched multiple times. The Outpost is a great war movie that I think just suffered from poor marketing and some burnout for war movies when it came out.
WOW Arkansas Was Brilliant !!! TYTYTY I thought you deserve a huge TY for the Suggestion . I watch your channel all the time. Keep up the Great Work!
The Man From Nowhere starts slow, but boy oh boy is it worth the watch.
The Killing was such a great series. Few shows can rival the acting and story of that series. Yes, Kinnamen killed his role in it as well.
i thought he was amazing in The Killing as well, but I havent really liked any of his other characters even near as much as I liked what he did with The Killing. Thats just an awesome series overall

Been watch your channel for awhile and finally subbed .. Thanks for your recommendations.. Great job bro..
Bruv good time is so good!! People need to see this!
I watched The Occupant when you talked about it in an earlier video a couple of years ago and really liked it - thanks Darren
I watched Arkansas last night and was great. He Never Died, was also very good movie and great pick on list.
Thank you for recommending Eye for an Eye. The movie was brilliant!
He Never Died is a sweet hidden gem!
I loved Crowe playing a regular dude.
thank you for this list!!!
You bet
The Night Comes For Us is one of the most violent, bloody movies I've ever seen. Makes Peckinpah look like an amateur. Looking forward to watching Headshot!
Have you seen “Habit” “Wendigo” or the more recent “Depraved”, all written & directed by Larry Fessenden? It’s his horror trilogy of vampires, werewolves & the Frankenstein story. All really good, especially Depraved, a modern take on Frankenstein. He Never Died is great& reminded me of Fessendens’ movies.
😯 I just finished watching Depraved on Tubi 2 minutes ago. Not bad.
The thing here is that I have to be in the mood to watch something interesting rather than purely entertaining.
.
Outpost is so good being based on actual events I got very emotional when you find out how courageous some of the soldiers were
Dragged Across Concrete is a very different kind of police/crime drama. The long scenes with odd dialogue is quite unique and; if you can be patient, it’s a great film that will stay with you long after you watch it
love the fact you mention the dubs as unless i know its a really good film i'm not a fan of subtitles, great video
I can't stand dubbing. You lose the actors' nuances.
Mario Cases is great, The Paramedic, The Occupant, the series The Innoent
The man from nowhere is an absolute gem. Good call!
Oldboy
The man from Nowhere
Death Wish
All very good movies
I have seen a few of these movies and you definitely like the slow gritty movies with higher characters development. So do I so I’m going to check out a couple of these like Arkansas
What a great list thank you so much ❤
I'm literally going to check out Oldboy right now, that looks really good!
The story lines and acting are really good regardless of the genre.
love these selections…and, we must be weirdos in our house but we 1000% prefer subtitles. we put them on even for english.
Love your channel. Keep kicking ass
Robert Patterson is a very unrated actor, in my opinion. Veteran is an awesome movie! I must admit this time, there are several movies I intend to watch from this list. You also had quite a few that I have already seen
Good Time is phenomenal. Dragged across concrete is fantastic as well, although slow in a couple parts.
Great list!!! Thanks!
You really did fill my queue with this one!
Just watched "Arkansas". Awesome recommendation!
Death Wish 2 featured Larry Fishbourne which would later become Lawrence Fishbourne , Charles's movies often featured starter actors which are household names today like Danny Trejo.x
I watch alot of movies and i gotta say you have be ome my go to for recommendations...
@Flick Connection. Talk To Me definitely surprised me. I honestly was prepared to turn it off 20-30 mins in. That did not happen.
Loved it…
If you liked Arkansas I would recommend Galveston starring Ben Foster.
Grea job. Thank you for the work you do.
Love the S.Korean movies. Old boy, Veteran and Man from Nowhere are excellent!
Nice Luis Tosar and Mario Casas picks man
"Next Three Day" very solid movie. Better than 90% of movies made today.
THANKS
You're welcome
