    ABOUT ME I grew up in a cabinet shop and was born to be a woodworker. In the past few years when work slowed in the custom cabinet industry, I converted a few friends Vans and SUV's so they had more storage for adventuring, work, or just the weekend beach getaway. If you want an even cleaner hole...drill from face side till spade bit point peeks through, then drill from opposite side. This will leave no injury to exit side whatsoever!

  • @LastNameTom
    @LastNameTom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As a note, you need to take into account that the little piece that slides out to lock, needs to slide out some, then go back in. Like when you push the button on a pen, the ball point comes out more before going in.
    That could ruin a cabinet door if you forget about that and cut a hole.

  • @netposerx
    @netposerx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And the cool thing is the catch prevents the door from pushing in. :)

    Do u prefer any wood over others on building a van? Based on quality, toxins, if it bends in moisture, etc. I know there is lots of wood to choose from but I don't know which is the best especially if you will live in ur van. Sorry I hope I make sense!

    • @mjremy2605
      @mjremy2605 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a strong wood that looks pleasing and is cheap. Birch plywood- marine grade is the one. If you use solid wood, pine too. This is a good question for beginners. So many woods, where do you begin? You start any project with REQUIREMENTS. What are your requirements - write them down. Whether moving house, painting a wall, making cabinets for RV (not house)
      Cabinet Requirements for RV:
      1. Structurally strong wood - this weeds out Kiri, redwood, cedar, cypress, etc. These wood are not strong and never used for cabinets. Birch, Maple, Walnut, Oak, Bamboo, Pine, Cherry are good.
      2. Lightweight wood due to weight constraints in RV - this weeds out dense heavy wood like Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Ipe, Rosewood, etc. What works is Bamboo, Pine, Birch.
      3. Resists warping from moisture - Plywood works better than solid wood for less warping.
      4. Will not rot easily, can handle vibrations, can handle heavy weight... and so on.
      5. Affordable price. Plywood. More pricey is Marine Grade Plywood, but nicer finish and higher quality. Much pricier is solid wood, but you have a choice. Worst of all is MDF - particle board - this crumbles with a hint of moisture, has a short life, and is very heavy.
      Birch Plywood checks most of the boxes so emerges as the winner.
      Always look at what you need (requirements) and what you are limited by (constraints) to arrive at a solution. This works for every project you undertake.
      Sometimes it is faster to see what others use, and use that after checking against your requirements and constraints.
      There are two things you have to do for any RV build:
      1. Research materials exhaustively. Use the best one.
      2. Measure, measure, measure before you start.

      @@SolidWoodWorx I can attest that these are good latches. I have four of them on my underbody boxes. You'll want to apply Loctite to the threads once everything is set though. If not, expect to re-tighten the stop and set nuts (a jamb nut affair) in a regular basis as they become loose from use and vibration. Also, if it's important to you, these can be keyed alike.

    • @mjremy2605

    You don't need that sacrificial piece of wood for the spade bit. When the pilot point penetrates the stock you're drilling, stop, turn the wood over and drill from the other side. Perfect, clean hole with no blowouts. Easy Peasy.

    • @SolidWoodWorx
      @SolidWoodWorx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes that works and sometimes the holes get offset. Either way works just showing people options ✌

    • @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt
      @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Spade bits "walk" wildly, resulting in, as Brian says, offset holes front and back. The real solutions are hole saws or forstner bits. With either of these, two principles should always be practiced: finished side up and the use of sacrificial stock to support the wood fibers on the opposing face.

    • @mjremy2605
