  • Transgender people in prison face a litany of challenges in prison, including higher rates of sexual assault. A 2015 study found incarcerated people were 10 times more likely to be sexually assaulted in prison. CBSN Bay Area's Michelle Griego spoke with Shaheen Pasha, co-founder of the Prison Journalism Project, and Lisa Strawn, a transgender activist, about what it's like to be transgender behind bars.

I was almost sent to prison for seven years and I didn’t do anything. I remember how evil the prosecutor was and how he belittled my character. I lost my business, my so called friends and family. I lost damn near everything I worked for, I worked hard and honest. And in the end I got fuc-d. You don’t have to break the law. All you have to do is get on the radar and piss off the wrong people. I’m literally broken now and I have a civil engineering degree. The justice system is broken and many people are labeled criminals who are not.

Isn't the whole point of prison for you to lose your freedom because you broke the law? So why are you here complaining about not getting to dress up and wear makeup? Maybe THAT'S why there are people who don't like you. Let's focus on why you went to prison and what you learned and won't do again so that you're now allowed to walk free.
