A series wouldn't make any sense - native Pennsylvanians who have stayed there (or move back) don't tend to go far from the State. For those from East PA, Jersey and Delaware are places that will be inevitably traveled to for some reason or another. Thus we get what makes this video so good and biting: it is knowing commentary of Delaware born of neighboring context and experience. The fuel to build the fire from simply wouldn't exist to make a video about Wisconsin, etc..

@@ZenRanger94 You probably already know this if you went to school there, but, Delaware kind of WAS the unwanted kid.
We refer to those first few states as the “Thirteen Original Colonies”, but technically, there were only twelve of them under British rule. Delaware was just the southernmost part of an entity known as the Colony of Pennsylvania and Delaware. The two parts of it WERE treated as separate colonies in some ways, but not in others, and they shared a governor. They didn’t split until during the Revolution. As for the “unwanted” part, zoom in on the weird border between the two states. It’s a semicircle, the center point of which is an old courthouse in New Castle. This border was made official when the two states split, but the division between the two parts actually dates all the way back to 1681, at which point what’s now Delaware was part of the Colony of Maryland. King Charles II gave William Penn the deed to what’s now Pennsylvania, with what’s now Delaware set aside for the then Duke of York (his son, James II), who had captured the territory from the Dutch. The following year, the Duke decided that he didn’t want the land and just let Penn have it. 🤣

  • @white0devil0

I appreciate these state review videos.
Also as a Swede I've come to understand that Delaware is where we established a colony that the Dutch then kicked over.

I've lived in DE, but I grew up (and now live again) in PA. It sure is a state, alright. Decent crabbing down south (where you'll encounter some of the more... colorful residents, who think it IS the deep south). But that's ok too, I guess. New Castle is pretty fun to walk around, and Cape Henlopen was some of the best camping spots around. I did my graduate thesis based on some Delaware marshes and spent a lot of time on the south shore of the Delaware Bay. Heck, even now, I drive through it at least 4 times per week omw to my work in NJ.
I grew up about 30 minutes away from DE, and it was always a special treat to be herded into the car with the rest of my family for a trip to the closest mall, Concord Mall. Which is kinda-sorta juuuust hanging on for dear life these days. My parents LOVED the no sales tax. I loved the Sbarro's, and the Walden Books, and the Spencer's Gifts. (Spencer's Gifts was still there the last time I went a couple of years ago!) My brother and I attended karate lessons in Newark. We shopped in ALL the stores on Rt. 2, Best Buy and Guitar Center (RIP) chiefly among them. I got my first job in the Computer City on 202 and lived, for a time, just down the street in my first apartment. I shot pool in Newark and saw small, shitty bands play in small, shitty coffee houses. Northern DE has some pretty twisty little back roads, and I bombed my Camaro down them so often that it became like a playground to me. I learned ALL the back road ways to my house WAY before Google Maps or even Mapquest, just by getting lost and figuring it out along the way. That's actually one of the things we were most envious about, and it still holds true today--DE has MUCH better road maintenance than PA will ever have. You knew IMMEDIATELY when you crossed the boarder because the ride got so much quieter and smoother. We figured it was all that DuPont money.
Anyway, apologies for rambling, but growing up in SE PA, Delaware was just so accessible and thus became a huge part of our lives (and still is). DE is rad and holds a special place in my heart. Much love.

I feel the same way about delaware. Though I'm from central PA. My family traveled down there every year up until about 2020 when I started going to obx. I still love it down there. I have so many great memories. Not perfect, but it's nice, and Cape henlopen is the best campground, in my opinion!

Same here, I lived in delaware over 20 years. Born in PA and im now back home again in PA, but it got too crowded, and I needed the change. I moved back home now im blossoming here in “Kentucky” 😅 but Delaware holds a special place for me. All my friends live there, I grew up sailing, hiking, swimming, fishing and then working at Cape Henlopen State Park almost 8 years. I will always love Delaware but im glad I left.

As someone who grew up in delaware, I appreciate the comment about the people in the lower 3rd. Pretty often, people who have never been to DE think "delaware isn't southern", which is kind of true, but I usually just laugh and say "you haven't been there"

As a lifelong Delawarean, I'm pretty sure it's the best state in the nation, but nobody takes us seriously, and I think we like it that way. Also, I've never been to any state other than Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. But I'm sure we're the best based on what I see about the country on PBS News Hour & CNBC.
Now I'm going to chat with a neighbor about the Delaware Way while watching the Kalmar Nickel dock in Wilmington and then pay my incorporation taxes for my HOA. Then maybe do my weekly check of the best rate on T-bills.

My band is from Claymont, Delaware. Delaware has a rich music history from the first Doom Metal Band BANG in the late 70s to the psych rock of Zen Guerilla in the 90s. One of the most underrated indie rock bands from the 90s was Caterpillar. There is a vibrant experimental and noise scene in Delaware. Bob Marley worked in a car factory in Delaware. I’m right with you, Brian. It IS weird that Pennsylvania wasn’t the first state, and I thought that even as a little kid growing up on the opposite side of the country.
My fourth grade teacher had everybody research and write these little reports throughout the year on the individual states, and put a big blank map of the country on the wall. Every time somebody wrote a report on a state, one of those little Avery foil star stickers would go on it. The first person to do a report on a state also got to color it in. This was in western Nevada, which is kind of like a refrigerator where the rest of the western USA’s leftover people end up (to the point that only one out of every four residents was actually born there), so naturally Nevada and the surrounding states where some of my classmates were born (including my own birthplace of Arizona) were already done at least once. Most of the more famous states, like Texas, Hawaii, New York, Alaska, and Florida were also already covered. I think one kid actually went with Delaware just because it was the first. I wanted to contribute to actually filling out the map, so I decided to go with a state that hadn’t been covered for my first report. I went with Pennsylvania, for kind of a stupid reason. Remember that kinda dopey sitcom set in Philadelphia, “Brotherly Love”? Yeah… it was in reruns on Disney Channel at the time, and I liked it for whatever reason. The more I read about Pennsylvania and the important role it played in the foundation of the country, though, I starting thinking that it should’ve been the first.

The damn thing ate it’s rear end as we rolled into Dover and we limped into the festival knowing we had some serious parking lot wrenching to do when the festival was over but we made it back thanks to a local wrecking yard having a rear end on hand. Most our party was helpless with a wrench so I sent them to the beach while me and another guy fixed the truck in heavy rain

I grew up in Wilmington, about 4 blocks from where Kahunaville was. Saw Quiet Riot and Green Day there. If you're not a beach person there is a pretty good car scene there. I'm sorry but I've lived in PA for almost 25 years and I unabashedly LIKE Delaware. I like salt marshes, cypress swamps and inland bays. Delaware gives me a way to be in them without having to go further south. The pace of life in Slower Lower is on par with states further south, but with proportionately fewer rednecks. Unfortunately like many other southern states farmland is being turned into Toll Brothers/Ryan tract housing, turning the state into the states other people move there from.

Lived there 2012 to 2017 in Sussex Co. It was 'ok'
2017-2021 in Kent Co, Dover area. Miserable, had to buy a vacation spot in Chincoteague to run away to every weekend from the misery of Dover
Now in FL. And never, ever going back
