Ruka could speak some Korean before she moved to Korea as a YG trainee in 2018 and learned to speak better Korean during the YG trainee process.
Asa could not speak Korean before she moved to Korea as a YG trainee in 2018 and learned to speak Korean during the YG trainee process.
Pharita could not speak Korean before moving to Korea as a YG trainee in 2020 and learned to speak Korean during the YG trainee process.

The members nicknamed Asa, Kim Asa because she is so good at Korean, and you can tell she's very proud of that. Also, I know the girls get some formal Korean lessons, they talked about it here and there in behind the scenes videos, including Rami being happy Chiquita wrote a birthday message to her in multiple languages including Korean, so she has been learning Hangul. And they even showed Asa practicing Korean idioms in Last Evaluation Episode 2.

The secret?
Torture.
YG international artists go thru torture, emotional and psychological torture, not being able to express their thoughts, burdens or anything if is not in Korean. So no one can talk to them in their native language or english.
Lisa and Asa expressed how isolated that made them feel, but is the YG way. They need to learn and fast or give up.
Edit:
Asa even wrote a song about how unconfortable and isolating the experience was.
Chiquita during the evaluations is struggling to express herself in Korean and still, she sometimes choke.

During the 1990s, when the K-POP trainee system was established by SM Entertainment, it was specifically designed to make the trainees endure hardships that will eliminate the weak and cause those that remain to bond through their adversity and hardships to grow to be a cohesive unit.
SM mentioned how the Korean military conscription and training system was the inspiration and model for the K-POP trainee system.
During 3rd gen, the Korean Government enacted laws to require companies to provide mental health care to their trainees.
The members of Blackpink have talked about how mental health services was provided to them, but they chose not to utilize them because they preferred to talk it out and seek comfort and encouragement amongst themselves.
