If the fluid is already at the correct volume, you won't loose any gear oil replacing the axle. It's good to check fluid levels after as part of a general maintenance plan.
What kind of grease did you put in the hub? Do you recommend to use a bearing grease packer on the hub to push out old grease and insert new grease? Do you use any cleaners to clean the hub out like brake clean?
I used a waterproof synthetic grease. Lot's of people recommend a marine grease as an option as well. I cleaned the hub but didn't use any cleaners. Maybe something to think about next time!
